The achievement of the PlayStation Portal in the market has surpassed what Sony initially anticipated. Hiromi Wakai, the Vice President of product management at PlayStation, communicated in an interview that the device, which is targeted at PS5 owners for remote play, has attained a level of popularity that the company did not foresee.

Increased PlayStation Portal Sales Lead to Production Boost

In a candid exchange with Gamefile’s Stephen Totilo, Wakai addressed the PlayStation Portal as a specialized product that is tailored for a niche audience. Despite facing criticism over its role as merely a remote player, Sony maintained that achieving high profits was never the primary goal for the Portal’s inception.

Wakai noted, “From its inception, the PlayStation Portal was crafted for individuals with particular requirements and preferences in their gaming experience. The public response post-announcement was largely anticipated.”
She further confirmed that due to the product’s escalating success, Sony has been compelled to bolster their distribution. “We are committed to consistently supplying more units to the market,” she assured.

Wakai also shed light on the manufacturing timeline, indicating that the Portal’s production did not commence in earnest until 2022. When probed about the potential for Portal users to stream games directly in the future, Wakai mentioned that she could not disclose any plans regarding this subject.

When did Sony start producing the PlayStation Portal?

Although the PlayStation Portal was announced previously, its mass production only began in 2022.

Will the Portal users be able to stream games directly in the future?

Hiromi Wakai has not disclosed any information about the future capabilities of the PlayStation Portal, including direct game streaming.

Conclusion

The PlayStation Portal’s sales performance clearly indicates a successful foray into the niche market for Sony. Despite its specialized purpose for remote play with the PS5, the device has resonated with the target audience, proving to be a valuable addition to Sony’s lineup of gaming products. With a promise to keep up with the unexpected demand, Sony’s dedication to providing a consistent supply reflects their commitment to supporting diverse gamer needs within the PlayStation ecosystem. As for future enhancements and features, enthusiasts will have to wait for official announcements from Sony.

if you making just 10 and wanted to sell 10, yes, it is good.

it is clear, sony didn't expected to sell them all. so how it is flop?
Because referenced market to like-minded or comparable products dictates market success, not a manufacturer's internal projections.

Just because they underestimated something doesn't mean that it is a hot selling or high unit selling item.

Again, these concepts are not mutually exclusive.

I'm really not understanding such hot defense of a tablet screen attached to controllers that you can't use for anything else.

A phone and their backbone dock renders this virtually irrelevant.

The two are not mutually exclusive. I could have 10 of something and it could sell out and by your logic that's somehow good.

Total units matter.
Their predictions and their budgets matter. Obviously if they created let's say 50,000 with a budget in mind which includes profits as a metric then it did good. Who is going to allot a certain amount of units and even if it sells out they lose profit? Consoles use tl do tht bevote but only because they knew software would recoup those loses.

They did not forsee this selling millions, the fact it is sold out and they had to increase production is a succès and win, no doubts about tht.

Why are they struggling to produce this? Or are they on purpose just producing enough that sells. Over 4 months since launch now.

The parts don't look like they would be hard to get a hold off.

LCD screen, dualsense and some mid/budget tier snapdragon chip, doesn't seem like those parts would be in such huge demand. Can't be that hard to manufacture this aswell.

I think they didn't expect them to sell out this fast and contacted a certain amount and now are scurrying for more.

If you bought a PS Portal, you got what you paid for. You'll be able to play Last of Us Pt 3 on it. PSVR2 is just a total loss at this point.
For me Portal is more useless. I don't play games out of home and I don't use portal devices at home. I hate small screens and if I wish I can afford to buy a 10000000" tv.

PSVR2 is still good even when Sony isn't supporting it anymore, but I hate how these assholes just dropped the device when they clearly made the decision to drop its support way before its launch day.
