How is everyone feeling?

What will PlayStation do?

Will they have a big showcase? What games will they show?

Showcase is possible.
PlayStation did a State of Play on December 10th, 2019 and had Ken Kutaragi appear at the end along with a teaser for a Ghost of Tsushima Trailer at the Game Awards two days later. (The Game Awards 2019 is when we saw our first PS5 game, Godfall.)

I remember when Resident Evil 3 Remake's PSN cover got leaked a lot of people thought it was a lock in for The Game Awards 2019 but Sony pulled a surprise State of Play last minute.

It happened on December 3rd which happened to be PS1's 25th Anniversary.
I remember Daniel Ahmed on twitter teased another event happening before the Game Awards and sure enough, The State of Play was announced

I would love a state of play or PlayStation Showcase to finally reveal Resident Evil 9 before the game Awards since it takes place on the 12th once again like in 2019. Maybe the 30th Anniversary follows what PlayStation did for the 25th and we see some sort of event?

But seeing how Monster Hunter Wilds was revealed at the Game Awards last year maybe Capcom goes with the Game Awards again this year and Sony just has a bunch of blog post announcements for some new accessories?
A PSX style event with a attendee's checking out games is almost impossible seeing as tickets for such a thing would of gone on sale already and Sony has been pushing away from Live events since late 2018 when they announced they wouldn't be attending E3 the next year and then when Covid happened Sony as a whole likes to do as little live event's as possible.

I think if Herman does NOTHING it's terribly irresponsible and borderline disrespectful.

These are moments that should be celebrated. It would ultimately be a missed opportunity to build up hype for upcoming games and existing consoles.

If I'm a newly minted co-CEO, I'm not missing opportunities to promote my brand and my IP...

Who is this guy anyway? I saw that he is also very active in the comments section of the YouTuber "MBG" and spreads the same thing there. I wrote to him there once to ask how he came up with that. In my opinion it's all just a wet fever dream. But now he's backtracked a bit and said Sony "could" present games at the TGA, which is logical and will happen, but has nothing to do with his original statement that Sony would do something "big" for the 30th anniversary.

I've already commented on this and I stick to it, there won't be anything more than blog posts or a video. Sony has never done anything big for any anniversary and it doesn't make sense to celebrate an anniversary by announcing new games or remasters of titles that have nothing to do with the PS1 era. But Sony has been celebrating the PS1 anniversary for weeks, whether it's special editions of consoles in the PS1 color, marketing (where the PS5 Pro design was "revealed"), a speech by Kutaragi at the TGS or the current PlayStation podcast on the subject. It just doesn't make sense to me to do something "big" now at the beginning of December when everything that is usual for such an anniversary has already been released weeks before.

If even Grubb, who usually has information weeks or months in advance, hasn't heard anything about any SoP or showcase, I wouldn't count on it. In my opinion, it also makes no sense to announce a title like Ghost of Yotei at the end of September just to put on a big show 2 months later. Sony now seems to have settled into a kind of rhythm, with around 4 months between events. I expect the next SoP to be at the end of January/beginning of February at the earliest.

It's also cheaper for Sony to place titles at the TGA. A trailer for the new Naughty Dog game would generate a lot more attention at the TGA than at a Sony event, because everyone watches the TGA regardless of the platform. Would I be happy about a big show from Sony? Of course. But the timing and occasion don't make much sense to announce new games, in my opinion. And I'm not sure whether the audience will be all excited if Sony presents a remastered collection of the old God of War games. I still think Sony is waiting for Nintendo to drop its pants and then go on the offensive.

Highly doubt that Sony will do an event or anything like that when The Game Awards is on December 12th and gets a far bigger audience for Sony to showcase their games. If I had to guess, I would say a new Death Stranding 2 trailer could be at The Game Awards.

Damn, that's just sad of they let it pass without an event.

Is that really the state of things?
Game Awards are less than ten days after and draw a bigger crowd. And December is just a terrible time for announcements, much better for actively selling stuff that is already out.

The Game Awards 2023 has 10 million views on YT.

The 2023 PS showcase has 5 million views on YT.

At first glance you might think you're right, but let me tell you why I disagree.

First, you have a dedicated viewerbase that is much more likely to buy your games with a PS Showcase. Everyone is there specifically for your games.

Second, PS Showcases usually get streamed by multiple channels and streams. Add the PS Showcase with English Subtitles +1.2 million, add the ign stream +1.2 million, Gamespot highlight reel 430K, Gamespot full presentation 338K, and various other live streamers.

So I don't think it's as clear cut as that.

I also think they'd be missing a clear opportunity to market the Playstation brand when they don't have a big holiday title to on release.

The Game Awards 2023 had over 118m viewers across all the live streams and platforms. It's simply the biggest audience which is far superior than that of a PlayStation Showcase because as you mentioned, it's a dedicated viewer base which is great and all but that's not going to help you grow your platform and eco-system. Marketing and advertising to the same viewer base that you already have isn't going to help increase sales, player counts or get new consumers into their eco-system. Marketing and advertising your products on what is more of a casual show would be of far greater benefit to Sony.

I mentioned weeks ago when people were mad that Microsoft had the marketing deal for Metaphor but realistically, that's where Sega, Square Enix, etc. should be marketing and advertising their games because they already have their dedicated fans on PlayStation who will be there regardless. It will always make more business sense to market and advertise your games to those who you don't already have because you want to grow your platform or in the case of Square Enix, Sega, etc., you want to grow the IP's.

On a side note, I don't really see Sony celebrating their 30th Anniversary until next September simply because they're bigger in North America than they are in Japan so a massive showcase next September is much more likely than a week before The Game Awards.

I don't think there is any evidence that the Game Awards helps grow platforms. Organic marketing seems a much better sell here. PS fans see games that they enjoy in a showcase dedicated to them and they talk to others about it. Not saying the game awards has no place, but not sure it's the avenue you think it is.

Always is a strong word.

It's possible but I don't think the company would go in two different directions here. The Platform business group already celebrated with the anniversary editions that were not limited to japan and there is already historic precedence that the game awards don't mean they won't do anything.

For what? To show off Days Gone remaster and more horizon spinoffs.

Xbox cant release games and when they do release they are mediocre, Sony cant make new games, Nintendo makes great games but impose a self handicap. GAMING IN 2024 ladies and gentlemen

Nothing will happen. If there's a showcase it will be a reel of games from the past, none of which will have sequels or remakes.
Chances are people will walk away confused and slightly annoyed at Sony.

@Bryank75 can we get a public poll to see who was alive and gaming 30 years ago? It would help to see why some people believe this gen is the best Sony generation.

I would love a in person live show. But that’s probably not going to happen.

Any new PS5 game announcements would be more than enough. There better not be any PC ports at this show either. The show needs to be about PlayStation only. Show us you care about your console and fanbase still.

Sony use to have PlayStation Experience every year in December.

It’s actually a perfect time to announce things since it’s the month of Christmas and people are still buying things.

Doubt it would happen. PS shows these last 4-5 years have been like mystery bags compared to being so organised and varied before.

I dont know why Sony doesnt do live fan shows like PSX once a year/ 6 months around the world. America, Asia, European countries at least

Theres no covid now so why not make some small shows for fans, where they can:

A show for smaller games, indie games, niche games
EVO Fight game Tournament and other competitions like Gran Turismo
Hear developers talk
Fans get to try PSVR2, Portal and new games etc

Too costly to run? Sony has billions.
Surely events like this builds the PS community and gets fans to try new games, products which might equal more sales
They havent got the Nintendo stores, theme parks etc. Build something else for fans to come together
