Sony released some new IPs this generation, but seems that in the second half of the generation (some of them maybe released after PS6 launch) we'll get many new IPs from them including top teams:

Internally developed 1st party IPs
  • Returnal
  • Astro Bot **
  • Concord
  • Venom **
  • Wolverine **
  • Bungie's Marathon **
  • SSM's new IP, pretty likely Cory's project *
  • ND's new IP, pretty likely Neil's project *
  • Firesprite's new IP (if their upcoming horror adventure isn't Until Dawn 2) *
  • Fairgame$
  • Bend's new IP *
  • Media Molecule's new IP * (if their next project, confirmed to not be Dreams related, isn't a new LBP/Tearaway)
  • Gummybears project incubated at Bungie and moved to PS Studios
  • Ex-Deviation dev's secret new SIE team new IP (maybe Deviation's game rebooted) *
Externally developed 1st party (2nd party) IPs
  • Destruction AllStar
  • Stellar Blade
  • Rise of the Ronin
  • Convallaria
  • Lost Soul Aside
  • Physint
* = unconfirmed / unannounced, but we're pretty sure they exist
** = technically aren't really new IP's, but will start new series of (not bundled/free) games available to all PS users

Some questions for you:
  • What impact do you think they are going to have going forward?
  • Do you think some of them will become some PS icons as now are GoW, Spider-Man, Horizon, TLOU, GT or Uncharted?
  • Do you think any of them will replace the spot of current/past iconic IP from these teams?
  • Do you think any of them will have an important role in their competition against MS or Nintendo?
  • Do you think any of them will help them grow beyond PS games (movies/tv shows, PC, mobile...)?
  • Do you think going forward they'll continue having around half of their games under development as new IPs or do you think that after this big batch they'll take a rest and will focus more on sequels?

I didn't add Firesprite's game because I'm pretty sure it will be Until Dawn 2. But I'll add it.

Astro Bot has been around since 2013, Wolverine and Venom have been around for decades and are already present in gaming.... Just cuz Sony working on them doesn't magically make them new IPs.

Returnal is the only new IP this gen, Concord as well but its so trash it's better to not count it. A complete and utter failure on SIE leadership.

Gummy Bears might be a smash bros. clone (or inspired by). This could look like something like live service Powerstone if one were to hope. Totally unexpected. Paul Tassi actually did some real journalism and helped elaborate on the Jason story.

Not interested in it at all whatsoever but the variety in their catalog is welcomed.

Based on the concept art, Gummie Bears has nothing on Power Stone's character designs (aside from the cat and the girl in the chicken suit). If/when the game is received tepidly by a large slice of gamers, like Concord you'll have people looking to blame everything but the character designs :/

Also Paul Tassi is still a garbage-tier journalist who could never break a story like Jason does.

-Astrobot will do great for platformers and Playstation. A resurgence for 3D Platformers not called Mario

-Wolverine will be great but the hype will be killed and lots of FUD because of leaks. It will be the best Wolverine game as Spiderman was the most complete Spiderman game.

-Marathon. I think it will be great, Bungie doesnt normally miss when it comes to gameplay shooters. It wont be as ambitious as Destiny and Marahon wont be used to fund 4 other projects so it will be a success.

-Ghost of Tsushima 2. Needed right about now. Will be a huge success and will have a better MP mode too

-Cory’s and ND’s projects will the the big ones. The Big AAA single player games Playstation is known for and PS5 needs them.

-Bend. Make or break for them

-Gummy bears. No idea

-Deviation shooter. Hopefullly it will be great and PS can have a COD competitor. Needs a Campaign to get majority of PS players in.

-Ghosts Busters game? Yeah I think there will be one

Right now PS5 needs titles like the AAA ND title, Cory’s Game SP game and some more

Ive been thinking who’s gonna do a PowerStone fighter next. It would be for Sony to do with there PS characters and other VG characters like Smash.

  • Returnal : Has potential
  • Astro Bot **: Has potential but not new IP
  • Concord: Dead on arrival unless delayed to rework character designs and certain mechanics
  • Venom **: Can't stand on its own, doesn't have good stable of movies to prop it up. Also not really SIE's IP; it's Marvel's and SIE are licensing it
  • Wolverine **: Similar to Venom, but can stand on its own, if done right. Need to get SBI out of the process.
  • Bungie's Marathon **: 50/50
  • SSM's new IP, pretty likely Cory's project *: Could be great; whether a long-term IP depends on how universe is set up
  • ND's new IP, pretty likely Neil's project *: Similar to SSM's game
  • Firesprite's new IP (if their upcoming horror adventure isn't Until Dawn 2) *:
  • Fairgame$: DOA unless they avoid Concord's mistakes
  • Bend's new IP *: 50/50. Could be their magnum opus, could be a dud.
  • Media Molecule's new IP * (if their next project, confirmed to not be Dreams related, isn't a new LBP/Tearaway): Should be creatively great; whether it provides profits SIE want is another story
  • Gummybears project incubated at Bungie and moved to PS Studios: 50/50. Another hero shooter probably won't do, maybe 3rd-person shooter/3D fighter (think ARMS influence) might be better. Needs strong & appealing character designs.
  • Ex-Deviation dev's secret new SIE team new IP (maybe Deviation's game rebooted) *: 50/50. Personally don't care about COD or COD-inspired games
Externally developed 1st party (2nd party) IPs
  • Destruction AllStar: Dead IP. Replace it and bring back Twisted Metal, but bring up Twinkle Riot (only good DAS character design)
  • Stellar Blade: Strong promise; whether SIE invest in it and retain it as exclusive is 50/50. Potential for it to push PS hardware drops sharply if lose exclusivity
  • Rise of the Ronin: Could have potential, will need to retain differentiation vs. Ghosts of Tsushima.
  • Convallaria: Unknown
  • Lost Soul Aside: Unknown
  • Physint: Major potential b/c Kojima and spiritual successor to MGS

Still not first party. Probably only All-Stars and Physint are from that sub-list.

Nautghty Dog and Santa Monica’s next IP’s are the ones to watch for in terms of changing the trajectory for SIE’s games.

Along with Team Asobi being the third pillar and Guerrilla’s Decima engine’s growth capabilites.

Media Molecule is a wild card, they may or may not make it to PS6.

Naughty Dog, Santa Monica, Team Asobi, Housemarque, and possibly Media Molecule are going to be the ones that push new conventions and ideas in AAA gaming.

Arrowhead will probably be brought into the fold by next gen and Kojima is pretty much an unofficial 2nd party studio that will also push gameplay conventions.

I think the rest will continue to just fall in line and make comfort food that the majority of playstation fans want. Open world, action, rpg-lite, cinematic adventure style games (or multiplayer) that are just derivative of other popular games within SIE or Ubisoft.

For example, Bend still have lot to prove…They need their Tsushima/Horizon/SM moment that the other three studios had last gen. Guerrilla are spread pretty thin with the multiplayer and most likely the next horizon which will be a cross-gen game with ps6. I would love for Tsushima become a samurai-cowboy sim like RDR but unlikely because SP just aren’t that big of a studio with that many resources. Insomniac are going to making marvel games that are going to be the best playing marvel games but not table shakers.

The new studios -

Haven - have an uphill battle to climb after Concord. Fairgame$ will be criticized the same way on top of openly using generative AI, which will come with heavy scrunity from the rest of the industry. The one good thing the game has going for it is that it’s not a genre which is over saturated (heist) and its 3rd person which is more console (ps) friendly.

Bluepoint - hard to know what they are capable of outside of remakes/remasters, if they fail they can always go back to that. Not as if there aren’t a ton of ps2-ps3 era games that couldn’t use them.

Housemarque - The studio with the most growth potential. They need to work creating a balance with making their games a bit more accessible and keeping it gameplay first and having a high skill ceiling. They satisfy a niche of gamers on PS similar to Team Asobi, where they can create a super devoted and vocal fanbase.

Firesprite - seems like another Firewalk, they’re a huge studio that have only produced a VR game and now are supposedly making an Untl Dawn sequel? Seems like a mismanaged mess of a studio. I won’t write them off yet because they seem pretty diverse as far as what they can do but we still have to see it.

Bungie - the story of the century. Destiny 2 is still one of the biggest MP games but its diminishing everyday, the verdict is out on what becomes of this if Marathon doesn’t hit, or even if it does. I think they will eventually have to diversify their output. A studio dedicated to making just gigantic shooters that require 400+ people each isn’t sustainable.

Neon Koi - ???????, i still don’t know what this studio is or its purpose.

Firewalk - either the hand of god comes down and revives Concord into a new genre of a successful game like Fortnite or Sony give them another shot at something else. Otherwise they aren’t making it to PS6

Why would it be make or break for Bend? They have a 8 million selling game on PS4 and a game that sold 2 million on PC... They're safe no matter the outcome

That 8 million number sold is with steep discounts and it was a critical failure something SIE take seriously. They might not dissolve the studio but the reason why Bends next game isn’t out yet is because they were regulated to being a Naughty Dog support studio after Days Gone.

If they put out another low 70 mc game that relies on deep discounts to move units i doubt they get another big budget game

The game had the 7th biggest North American launch at the time of release and debuted at the top all across Europe. It sold millions at full price. And the average selling price was $40 for sales... That's not what you call a steep discount.

Was the 12th highest earning PS4 game digitally with over 100 million from just PSN and that was just from 2.7 million digital download... There's another 5.3 million physical sales and revenue / profit we're missing.

Sony never considered the game a flop by the way and was clearly happy with the game. It also sold 2 million on PC.

Sony Bend Upper Management wanted to move on from Days Gone because they had fired the creator of the IP and then the next lead left the studio after management declined the pitch.

And yes they were sent to help Naughty Dog and stuff as Sony's Management wanted to keep the staff busy instead of laying off people since they weren't working a game.

So this whole discount narrative is bullshit

Blame director of the game at the time, not the narrative.

Seems like the fans of Day’s Gone are trying to rewrite history on how big of a blunder it was for a major single player sony game for whatever reason

I don't need to blame the director because in the same article he clearly said he does not know the numbers as he was instantly fired before the game even did a month at retail. All he said was Days Gone didn't do God of War Numbers at launch. Then explained he was referring to gamers stealing games back on PSP when Syphon Filter didn't get a sequel.

Days Gone was not a blunder, I dunno what you are talking about, at least try to hide your bias against the game. A game that sold over 8 million is a blunder... Okay.
