I hate cloud gaming. It's just an excuse to take away game ownership and turn gaming into a monthly bill.

I'll never ever support it.
As a standalone 'buy to stream' product, like some of the streaming services offer, I agree, total dogshit. Cloud is a good addition to a subscription service like Plus, but for the same reason as you I also fundamentally dislike subscriptions, which are the real issue imo, not cloud.

Streaming AAA to phones is probably the single biggest argument in favor of cloud gaming. I'm also a fan of AAA gaming on ultrabooks, where Playstation is way behind
Where were you when Sony provided mobile games streaming in PSNow? They were, in fact, the first, initially rolling out the feature to Xperia phones.

Imagine you're a real person and not a footsoldier in the system wars. First of all, you don't own a fucking Xperia phone, gtfoh. Second, PSNow was, in fact, unplayable dogshit with 1 second latency. Who cares if they were first to a terrible experience? I have more respect for Sony being first to local remote play between PS3 and PSP. That at least had some usefulness.

i think they should allow it on PS Portal too.

It pretty easy, just require PS Portal to "linked" to a PS5. So basically you need PS5, and Portal is not an seperate devices that can canibalize salea.

yeah if we're talking about the visionary element, then let's give it to them for the original breakthrough. when vita came out it was expanded to all ps3 games.
Vita never works with PS3, it works only with PS4.

PS3 network card is ways too outdated for that.

Nice to see PS cloud improvements:
  • PS5 games support (as of now 'select titles', plan to add 'hundreds')
    • Games you bought
    • Games you rented in the PS+ Premium sub
    • Trials
  • 1440p and 4K resolution options with 60fps streaming support
  • HDR support
  • 3D audio support
  • DualSense features support
  • Available to stream on the PS5 console at launch (meaning later they'll move it to other devices)
  • Games mentioned: Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon Forbidden West, Ghost of Tsushima, Mortal Kombat 11, and Saints Row IV (from the PS+ Premimum subscription) Resident Evil 4, Dead Island 2, Genshin Impact, Fall Guys, and Fortnite (if you bought them)
Pretty underwhelming that it's PS5 only.
They said "PS5 cloud streaming is exclusively available on the PS5 console at launch", meaning they are making a progressive release. First they did it to some PS5 users in the beta, now they'll do it for all PS5 PS+ Premium members with different regional releases.

I assume a few months later they'll release it in PC too. And well, they are working on bringing PS cloud to phones and smart tvs, so I assume some day they'll release it there too.

Streaming AAA to phones is probably the single biggest argument in favor of cloud gaming.
They are working on it. They announced phones, tablets and smart tvs as part of their long term plans when they announced PS Now. They also mentioned expanding PS Now to smartphones when talking about PS Now 'next gen plans' shortly before announcing PS5. And well, we also saw multiple Sony patents about game streaming over 5G phone lines.

I'm also a fan of AAA gaming on ultrabooks, where Playstation is way behind. I wouldn't even consider a cloud streaming service that doesn't have a browser client.
I think the browser option is a good addition, but a native app is a more optimal solution in terms of performance because allows to access faster to the hardware resources to get less latency for controls, GPU or sound, in addition to have a bigger internet bandwith because they skip .

If thy do thy were late to the party. Sony has consistently had better streaming res offering they play catch up later.

Nope not yet!

People also ask

Can you play xCloud in 4K?

To keep a consistent performance, Xbox Cloud Gaming streams at a 1080p resolution up to 60fps. That means you won't be able to stream games at a higher 1440p or 4K resolution, but 1080p is more than serviceable on the smaller screens you'll likely be making use of for Xbox Cloud Gaming
PS5 streaming in addition up to 4K 60fps will also support HDR and 3D audio.

Does Xbox Cloud support HDR and 3D audio? I don't have HDR display and only have some barely decent headsets so didn't test it.

Makes sense if Portal is supported.
As of now it's going to be a Remote Play only device.

At launch Portal will only stream from your PS5 console the games installed there, won't stream from Sony's servers.

Will they add a future firmware update to add support for PS cloud gaming from the Sony servers? I'd say it's very likely, but they didn't announce it or hinted it.

Adding up to 4K 60fps + HDR + 3D audio streaming of not only the ones in PS+ but also at least some of the PS5 you bought outside PS Plus means that their server costs are going to skyrocket, and as they scale their server stuff there are tech challenges they have to solve, so as a good practice is better to scale slowly step by step.

I'd say they plan to support PS cloud gaming on Portal, but not now because they have their PS cloud team busy with the PS5 stuff and because they want to scale step by step.

I use it all the time so it's a good thing for me.

@Yurinka they've been on this for like 10 years now. the lack of client flexibility is not a new problem. and they've been a generation behind on general video clarity / latency compared with stadia and xbox streaming. compared with nvidia they're 2 generations behind.

I'm sort of glad this thing is just console war feed instead of something folks are really considering.

Unlike MS and Stadia yes, Sony has been offering cloud gaming for almost 10 years.

the lack of client flexibility is not a new problem
In 10 years you're the first person I see complaining about it, so I wouldn't call it an issue. But yes, it would be great to release it in phones, tablets and smart tvs asap and the easiest and cheapest way (even if not the best to optimize bandwidth and latency) is to do it via web browser.

The thing is that 4G and previous phone lines have been awful, and same goes with pre-wifi6 wifi. The tech still wasn't -and maybe isn't- ready to offer an optimal cloud gaming experience for portable devices. And today still needs a bit of work and effort to get an optimal experience with a wired connection. 5G coverage still is tiny, and same goes with wifi6 or higher routers or portable devices.

Pretty likely Sony has pretty much ready a client/tablets/smart tvs, but are waiting once makes it makes more sense in terms of market. And meanwhile they keep tweaking and improving it in the already existing platforms, with things like today's improvements in addition to the Plus and Now merge, and also its recent integration with Sony Pictures Core and in the future (at least partially) Cruchyroll.

they've been a generation behind on general video clarity / latency compared with stadia and xbox streaming. compared with nvidia they're 2 generations behind.
Bullshit, in fact Xcloud and Stadia didn't exist a generation or two ago. Maybe back then MS and Google were negotiating how much money they were going to pay Sony to use their game streaming patents.

Yes, Xcloud and Stadia offered "4K" before, but its image quality at 4K was pretty bad even with a fast fiber wired connection. It was better to play in 1080p.

But well, image and latency depends on many factors for all game streaming services and the main ones are the distance between the player and the servers and if you have a good enough setup at home:

To play at home using a Mc Donalds wifi and poorly configured router using a poor internet connection offers a completely different experience than playing wired with a good cable and good and properly configured router using a fast fiber connection.

And well, we also have the catalog: GP has day one (mostly yellow metacritics) games, and PS+ only in a handful cases had day one games. But Sony had bigger quantity and quality of games, at least according to a few comparisions that some people did counting games and taking notes of their MC score.

OK, maybe you got access to different data centers from me. But my experience 100% corresponds with PC World's ranking here, which puts Playstation in last place, behind Amazon Luna (Stadia is omitted for 2023).

They even call out the user experience:
The user experience and app interface needs a complete overhaul

In my case, while ago (PS4) the experience greatly improved when I moved to wired making it playable, and improved when I upgraded to 1Gbps fiber connection and tweaked the configuration. More recently I got a wifi6 router for PS5 and I'd bet it improved.

But maybe all these improvements are more than releated to my setup were related to something else like Sony putting some server closer to me, or that they did some improvements in the service since the last time I tested it. Because outside more recent times, I rarely used it with maybe years between periods I was playing some games.

Years ago I had a 150 mb connection and like 20 upload and it even worked good back then to a point I was streaming Driveclub and I thought I was playing a native game. 5 years ago or so I moved to 1gig fios and like 500 upload and it's continued to work good, so good I remote play about 200 miles away when I go to my girls and still play top 3 on COD mp :) with mp I can feel slight lag but it speaks volumes that I can play a fast paced, twitch mp game and still do good! These psn cloud streaming narratives that many parrot only do so because they either haven't tried it, live in west bubble fuck or just follow the fanboy hive mind.
