PS5 had a 43% share of all console sales over the last 12 months in UK (November 2022 to October 2023), but over the last six months (May 2023 to October 2023) that has risen to 51%. The console's sales are also up 100% in some EU countries.

Overall in every major market, video game console sales are up. PS5 sales are up over 100% in some European countries, while Nintendo Switch sales are incredibly up year-on-year, despite it approaching its seventh anniversary.

But as is often the case, topline numbers hide some other concerning trends.

The global market growth on consoles is driven by PlayStation 5, which has grown exponentially over 2022. This is because PS5 was largely missing from store shelves due to severe stock shortages last year (although the US market appeared to fare better than others). PS5 is delivering record-breaking numbers right now, but that is partially due to pent up demand caused by a lack of availability in 2022.

The success of the Switch is impressive, but the growth is mostly localised in Japan and other export territories. In the US, Switch sales have dropped 21% this year, while sales have slipped 7% across Europe.

As for Xbox, it's been a tough year for Microsoft's platform as it's declined in sales during its third year on sale in most major markets.

According to GfK, in the UK PS5 had a 43% share of all console sales over the last 12 months (November 2022 to October 2023), but over the last six months (May 2023 to October 2023) that has risen to 51%.

"Recent PS5 highlights coming from unrestricted sales on the standard PS5 hardware model, aggressive price promotions in July and August, and the recent EA Sports FC 24 bundle," explains GfK games boss Dorian Bloch.

"Over the same measures the Xbox Series consoles have dropped from 26% market share over the last 12 months to 23% over the last 6 months, but the biggest decline has been Switch, down from 34% to 25%."

So although there is growth in consoles this year, there are also signs of dropping interest in some quarters.

This Holiday sales period, and Black Friday in particular, is an interesting one as it is the first Black Friday where all three current consoles are in fully supply. Nintendo Switch has largely had Black Friday to itself over the past three years, with a lack of available stock for its competitor platforms.

We are already seeing some planned activity from the platform holders. In Europe, Nintendo appears to be focusing on the Standard and Lite Switch models, with a Nintendo Switch Sports and Animal Crossing bundle offer taking centre stage. The OLED model, which targets more core players, is also getting a special version for Black Friday in the US (OLED Switch sales are up worldwide, including in the US and Europe).

Seems that the "MS monopoly", Sony's PC ports are finally killing PS, Sony is doomed. ;P
They wouldn't have to discount consoles to get great sales if "Only on PlayStation" still existed
Sony just can’t be stopped huh.

You can’t buy that type of success and brand power.
Microsoft will keep throwing money at the problem, they'll still be in last place with mediocre games, and Phil will get another lifetime achievement award. 2027 can't come quick enough.

Agreed

Yep, its not that I think MS will get anywhere with these purchases. Its how many IPS, Studios and publishers they take down with them before they fail ultimately and take away from PS.

You keep repeating this but I don't think you understand.

None of this will matter short term. We'll start seeing the effect of this a few years from now.
I know they are long term bets. But several MS acquisitions were made several years ago and the distance between MS and Sony keeps enlarging instead of reducing.

I mean, the context of this thread is the UK/EU sales soon after MS released their most important Zenimax/Bethesda exclusive for this generation, plus their first Zenimax exclusive: Redfall. Plus also having included their stuff on GP.

The result, as usual is that they didn't have any noticiable effect and if something their direct competitor increse their market share.

Same goes with the Sony PC ports: according to some people in this forum they are a disaster and are supposed to negatively affect the PS5, but in the Sony reports their segment keep improving the revenue they make and also improvements for PS5, something we also see in this kind of sales reports.

Probably more if you take only 2023.
November and December are the months wit smaller shares that drop the average.

We should have seen output from some of these teams a much longer time ago.

- All studios/publishers had ongoing projects when they were bought, some as early as 2018.

- Sony's studios have had regular output after they were purchased (we just got Spiderman 2).

On the other hand they can't break all their studios, MS had good games before, they were just not on the same level as Sony (thinking of Gears 5, halo 5, the Forza games until the last one).

You're right! We should let Microsoft buy more publishers after Zenimax & Activision|Blizzard. Maybe Sega, Capcom, Square, Fromsoftware, CDPR, Ubisoft or Take two?

Welp, who needs games on the PlayStation! Sales numbers are the only thing that matters

Sales prove consumers want PlayStation. That’s why PS5 is selling the way it does.

So yes sales numbers do matter.

PS5 discounts over the summer were to get rid of stock for the new PS5 slim. PS4 launch model also had discounts before the slim was released in 2016.

Attributing PS5 high sales to temporary discounts the last few months doesn’t make any sense.

But I agree Sony should stop with the PC ports.

Ok so what's the solution? We should let MS buy more publishers until they finally get some marketshare away from Sony? I know this is what you want but that's not how competition works.

MS needs to be stopped. Point blank. Customers made their choice.

Yuri has said multiple times Sony needs to be kept in check and they need competition. He was for the Activision acquisition because of that.

He also has been repeating that "MS monopoly" post every time good PS news comes out. Insinuating PS will be fine so MS can get more.
