I doubt this bombing narrative is true, and it would only point to the need for day 1 ports. I know I'm not spending $70 on 2 year old games.

Console is their priority, but Sony wants to make some revenue from other segments also. There is money that can be made from PC and mobile.

The vast majority of PC gamers are not spending $70 or $60 dollars on a game.

PC is not the platform for AAA single games, is for indies, multiplayer or FOTM streamable games like Only Up, Among Us, Fall Guys, etc.

The only reason we still have things like Spiderman, Ratchet & Clank, Zelda, God of War, etc is because of consoles. There is a market for big videogames but its on consoles because those are the players that would support the devs paying the total price. You can't make a $150 or $200 million dollar budget games with a playerbase that either pirates or wait for huge discounts before buying it, it's just not sustainable.

This has nothing to do with releasing the port the same day or with marketing. This is about consumer habits on gaming platforms: PC players waits for huge discounts or pirates, Xbox players doesn't buy games they only play with gamepass, Nintendo and Playstation players buy games.

We see this pattern quite easily when a big game realases at the same time on multiple platforms and the company shows how well it did. Just to name an example we can look at Resident Evil 4 Remake, while this article is about the UK the data usually translate to other countries everytime:

https://tech4gamers.com/resident-evil-4-remake-ps4-ps5-sales/

70% of the game sales where on Playstation, the other 30% is split between PC and Xbox.

That why the biggest games go to Playstation and Nintendo, and Xbox/PC is usually indies, multiplayers, GaaS or AA games like Hifi Rush (great game regardless of what some people here says). Its basic business.

Day 1 ports for 1P content is exactly how Sony would end up losing money, that way they open up the path for cannibalization of their audience to PC.

Xbox's audience has been thoroughly cannibalized due to their day 1 PC initiative, which is part of the reason why Xbox hardware sales have been falling off a cliff lately (replaced by people getting PS5s and PCs).

What these guys don't understand is that there are limits to the console gaming market.

- Microsoft went down from the 360 era sales with the xbox one and series consoles
- Nintendo had to axe its home console section to stay relevant and is forever out of the power game.
- Sony sold more PS4 than PS3 but they have axed their portables. Also didn't get close to PS2 sales.

And if we compare the early 00's with today you can say that gaming is overall WAY more popular than in those days. Its mainstream now vs somehow ostracized back then. How come we didn't have 200M PS4 sold 90M Xbox One and 200M Switches sold?

The 6th and 7th generation were the peak era of console gaming. Lots of home consoles sold and also an impressive market for portables. Specially the 7th gen 2005/6 - 2013/14. During that generation you still had: Strong PS2 sales, PSP, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, DS, and 3DS and Vita at the tail end.

And this is why Sony (and MS) are catering to the niche of PC gamers that want the games but don't want a console. Do you think they can't snag a used PS4,/xbox sub to PS Plus/Gamepass for some months , binge beat all the exclusives and sell it afterwards? That's easier to do and even cheaper than paying top dollar for PC ports of old games releasing every 4 months.

They're not 2 year old games IF THEY'RE NEW TO THE PLATFORM..... If Half Life Alyx got a PSVR2 port I would gladly pay full price for it, because it's new to the platform.... PC gamers really are cheapskates that want everything for $5 or below. You guys are becoming worse than Xbox gamers. No wonder there is an informal allegiance between you guys.

It's funny that the PC people who have seemingly been begging for these ports are mostly PCMR who can afford $3000 GPUs and $1000 CPUs, but can't afford $60 games.
Lol for real.

Some of these folks update their shit nearly everytime a new gpu comes out aswell.

I hope in the end sony just stop releasing their first party single player stuff on PC.

If pc folks don't want to pay for it and sony don't see any return of investment then just dump the platform altogether for their singleplayer games, and just use it to push GAAS.

The other option i was thinking of is just push a new storefront on PC for playstation, that way sony get the full cut and maybe they can give PC folks the discount they want. But we would never here the end of it if another storefront was introduced.

When you’ve blown your entire bank balance on a PC rig and can download games for free, you aren’t gonna pay full price for a game.

Not only do these entitled bunch want cheap games they also want Day 1.

They actually believe they deserve the same treatment as PS5 gamers who have bought a 500 pound console and subscribed to their service.

The only games PC gamers deserve are live service games.

Always online so no piracy and chuck in as many microtransactions as possible.

Bungie and their games are perfect for these folk.

Anyway, the shitty sales so far are blessing in disguise.

Sony will eventually give up on PC in regards to single player games.

Never seen anybody complain about late ports of Rockstar games on PC and their prices.

Also never seen anybody complain about pricing of previous timed exclusives

Just excuses.

First they were begging for everything.

Then they conplained they’re not Day 1.

Now it’s expensive and not their type of games.

Please release Demons Souls and Bloodborne so we can pirate the shit out of those too.
Release Half Life Alyx on PS5 now at full price and watch it sell with the PSVR2.

The biggest PlayStation release of 2021 is nothing but a big flop on PC yet people will pretend this is somehow good.
Maybe playstation fans overestimated the popularity of their franchises?

The game sold 1 million on PS5 and then fell off the charts. I guess sony fans didn't really care about it, or there aren't too many of them.

You realize you can do that on playstation too? At least during the ps4 era if you didn't get FOMO and picked a game up 3 months later it was often half price.

I think I bought only 4 games at full price on PS4, all but one were special edition or collectors editions too.

I think Sony are the ones that did not their fans, they also underestimated piracy and how easy it would be to make these ports.

I find it hilarious that they went against their established business model for these crumbs and might even end up losing their dominance on console in part because of this. Well deserved.

Ports should be getting much easier now as all the games are made with PC in mind now. Nixxes just needs to throw in dlss, real rt, make menus, and then make the package run on windows instead of bsd.

Piracy really isn't that big on PC honestly.
I hope so, sony then no longer has to waste time porting stuff to pc. Sounds a like a win for everybody.
Nah, they'll keep trying. In 10 years they'll probably start porting the games to phones. Corporations are all about more money. More markets, more money.

Consoles are a dead end.

Nice to know that PlayStation games are now being developed with low specked PC in minds, might explain why it's taking so long to develop these games.

Only 3 of the ported games were developed by Nixxes. Sony is spending a lot more resources than just that, including wasting the time of studios like Naughty Dog.

Nintendo clearly knows better than Sony but they are betrayed by their weak hardware and their games just end up being massively pirated on PC. I could definitely see Nintendo growing their market share on console with the Switch successor taking advantage of Sony lack of focus.
