Just to let people know: in GaaS often there's two different teams.

One to create and develop the base game that gets shipped at launch, and another one for the post launch stuff (normally know as "live-ops" or "live"), in charge of designing and developing post launch features and content, fixes and server monitoring, management, operation and improvents. In addition to gameplay, monetization and retention metrics monitoring and taking actions to rebalance or improve them.

There are often producers, directors, designers, artists or coders dedicated to only one of these two parts.

Meaning, very likely this change means that they have Marathon release game pretty much complete other than final tweaks, polishing but mostly testing and bugfixing. Meaning, some key guys can move to start another project (let's say Destiny 3) while other people develops the post launch stuff of the game.

Could be the situation. Ziegler has been director since shortly after the reveal. Don’t like the hero shooter rumors tho.

Having heroes means its easier to monetize, I'm also not surprised that a Valorant guy would be moving the game towards that.

Anyhow, reading the article and morale inside Bungie must be at an all time low.
Also this part is just...

However, sources at the time also told IGN that when leaders were asked if they had considered taking pay cuts prior to making layoff decisions, one responded that Bungie was not "that type of company."

Bad management is paying themselves the big bucks to keep being horrible at their jobs, truly amazing.

Yeah the pieces are adding up, something is amiss. It's like everybody denying the Factions rumours and issues and low and behold they were true and game was cancelled.

They were no doubt hoping for a GaaS mentor. Did Helldivers leverage their experience or it’s from the left field? The rest of the GaaS initiatives are practically cancelled, so I’d say it hasn’t worked out…….thank goodness.

Why do people keep saying Bungie helped out Arrowhead with Helldivers 2 when we have like zero proof?
All Sony's GAAS games went through their Live Service Centre of Excellence

We don't know exactly what it all entails

But everyone is prepared to conclude that it resulted in negative results for Factions 2 and other canned projects. It's equally likely their processes helped successful projects

Them emphasizing how big of a failed investment it is for them internally, would make Sony mad as well.

Their Biggest acquisition then adding the 1.2 billion to keep the talent there, only to dissapoint in both Advising in GaaS games while also missing financial targets consistently according to this email, must make them very upset.

They should acquire Arrowhead and give their CEO the chairman of that SIE Live Service Center of Excellence. Helldivers 2 has exposed those mega studios really hard, with Act/Blitz being even a bigger failure of investment.

I don't think Bungie knows what Bungie wants. They left MS for freedom. Then committed to Activision. They left Activision for freedom. Then they commited to Sony. But they still want freedom. In reality, Bungie isn't even Bungie of the 1990s. It's by name only. Bungie is being passed around like a red headed stepchild.
Bungie’s prime was in the 2000’s.

Aztecrross livestream commentary. Incomplete info at the time but still fun to watch.

I find it funny that Halo/Destiny fans don’t even want Marathon (including myself). General consensus doesn’t want it to exist and instead like quadruple down of Destiny. I mean yea… it’s different altogether. I kinda don’t either but I’ll try it sure. Destiny is the continuation of the Halo formula … Marathon won’t cater to similar players and won’t be arena PvP and to assume arena players like BRs and extraction shooters…. NOPE! Arena shooters have player engagement every 3 seconds where BRs action is more dynamic and with engagements few and far between. Slower game. Hitscan gunplay not even the way to go when larger maps and long ranges necessitate projectile in the genre.

He’s also not really correct on the Christopher barret stuff. He got a new title associated with the game and the change having happened shortly after reveal is … bizarre. He may have been removed. Personally think Barret is a narcissist with a game dev rockstar persona who’s to busy posting what finger nail color he painted for the week but his resume has been good. That’s all the shade I’ll throw tho since I still generally have a ton of appreciation for him. Not the undisputed best Destiny director but one of the best.

Hero shooter change for characters is terrible news. OW2 isn’t tearing it up and doing on par with Destiny currently. Player agency of character looks abilities is far superior than hero character junk.

I agree.

Too late now unfortunately.

PlayStation top brass wasted their money on Bungie. No way Sony give them more.

Capcom was always out of the equation. Saudi Savvy group has made investments in them.

If anything Sony is gutted that Nikon has acquired RED with probably a fraction of Bungie.

Why did Sony buy Bungie, they did not buy them for a particular game they bought them for their tech/service. So how is it a bad investment when we got shit like HD2 that damn near plays like a Bungie shooter and is very successful.
I think old Bungie stans are still mad that the og halo creators aint sucking MS ass and is instead going home with Sony every night so they out here spreading fud.

Helldivers plays like a Kojima game, actually, and more specifically MGSV:

And gunplay is way, way more better than Bungie by a mile, and Destiny is a great FPS shooter and enjoy its gunplay but Helldivers is just another beast and Bungie get no credit because those pansy devs aren't like Arrowhead devs who served a training time in the military and know how guns work in real like not that RPG hit cashier counter.

Here with the following image (and related speech in the related fiscal report) Sony explained it:

Before they had separatedly Bungie, SIE Publishing, PS Studios Live Service Hub, PS Studios Tech & Services and the studios themselves of PS Studios (not only Bungie). They made a plan to integrate their GaaS specific stuff related teams into a Sony Live Services Center of Excellence.

In the 6 monhs after they completed the acquisition (mid Jul 22-mid Jan 23), Bungie and PS Studios shared and learned from each other GaaS process inmmersion, philosophy & principles.

Then in the next 6 years (mid Jan 23-mid Jun 23) they built wider SIE expertise AND assisted in-development GaaS projects regarding their Live Service Capability and Individual title reviews.

Around mid June 2023, the Sony Live Services Center of Excellence was fully established fully integratting Bungie expertise into all (GaaS related) SIE -including PS Studios- processes:
  • Design / concept reviews (overall GaaS integration)
  • Monetization & data reviews (monetization strategy, big data and game metrics tracking & analysis)
  • Pre-production pipeline review (to make sure the GaaS related design, budgets, teams, servers, etc are considered since the start of a GaaS)
  • Launch readiness & post-launch reviews (to double check their post launch roadmap, monetization strategy, server tech, early metrics tracked & estimattions, and other GaaS related stuff is ready and looks good enough)
0026.jpg

Some people misunderstood this thinking Bungie now was cancelling or delaying games from PS Studios or even shutting down studios, or deciding what games they do next, when isn't the case. Basically merged the GaaS SIE+PS Studios+Bungie knowledge and expertise and created an unified team to overview, support and review the GaaS areas of all SIE (PS Studios + Bungie) titles under development.

Which in some case may have helped to identify some areas with room for improvement in some GaaS related topic and maybe change some budget or tweak some plans, maybe causing some delay. But not a big deal other than decide if stuff gets unlocked or bought with this or that currency that can be only unlocked, bought or both, if the price is this or that, if adding or modifying this or that makes the game more likely to have a better retention, if the budgets and post launch roadmap are the correct ones, if they have this or that tech to track in-game progression, retention, monetization metrics plus server issues and things like that.

Having all this, then each dev team has creative freedom, they handle their games themselves and address with their publisher editorial team (PS Studios for ones, Bungie for others) if the game is ok to achieve their related miletones when it's the time. Not only considering these things, but also the many other areas specific for non-GaaS or common between GaaS and non-GaaS.

This Live Service Center of Excellence applies to all SIE GaaS, from both Bungie and PS Studios, under development. This means, not only unreleased games as was the case of Helldivers 2, but also to already released GaaS titles such as MLB, Gran Turismo 7 or Firewall Ultra.

Yet they work with Team Ninja and make shit like Rise Of Ronin...
Bungie does not support/work with Rise of the Ronin because isn't a Bungie game or a GaaS title.

Sony works with Rise of the Ronin via their Japanese XDEV team (previously known as the 2nd party publishing XDEV team of Japan Studio), which belongs to PS Studios. Same one who handles recent and future Kojima or From Soft games, and now also the Asian but non-Japanese 2nd party games like Stellar Blade.
