MS is losing 200 dollars on each box they sell, if Sony were to do that, they would be facing a worse gen than the PS3 financial wise

Europe currency rate are not good for Sony.
BTW Sony is already cutting prices here (Brazil)… PS5 Slim is R$200 cheaper than old model.
US I can see a $50 cut this year.
In Europe I don’t know.
In the 4th holiday season of the PS4 life cycle, it was discounted down to $199, I remember cuz I bought one for a friend. This year will be the PS5s 4th holiday season, they can and should cut it down to $399

The fact cut it down to $399 basically back to launch price is crazy in its 4th year lol. While they don’t move from x86 that actually has bigger chips that can’t be shrink (or the shrink will only make it 10% smaller) they won’t have options to drop price like in previous gens.
Blame the stagnation of the semi-condutor industry that today works wit marketing nodes… 7nm, 6nm, 5mm, etc are all the same… the 7nm didn’t have big improvements in size/cost compared with 14/16nm already,
If you don’t have the semi-conductor in your side you have to find alternatives.
An ARM should give you similar performance as x86 at half the cost… plus it decrease PCB (motherboard), cooling and design complexities making overall build cheaper and way smaller.

400 for the disc version by end of this year would be good with some capacity to cut lower if needed in the following year... 20-50 euro / dollar cuts if and when appropriate (short term)
A price drop on launch models would help them catch up on their missed sales targets, while shedding the stock ready for the Pro.
If the slim is most cost effective to produce, having that as the only available SKU would save/make Sony more money in the long run.
Stock clearing, and the only SKU that will be available for the rest of the gen will be a digital-only white Series X.

Could say the same thing about nintendo they haven't cut the price of the switch in going on 7 years , they don't even cut the price of their old games (except the occasional 33% off sales lol)
They're in the low-end console market same as Nintendo Yet they never used switch sales to say Nintendo had a monopoly in consoles
Series S has much weaker and cheaper hardware under the hood.
Nintendo are propped up by fans who have a similar mindset to Apple consumers.
Combine that with they have a consumer friendly hand-held which was the only horse in town for most of the lifecycle.
It's a status symbol to have one.
I agree except with the consumer friendly part
7 year old games and extremely weak hardware that never go on sale isn't really consumer friendly,
