Ah yes by chance after chance you mean Sony sending over a top head from Sony Santa Monica to try and fix a Japanese studio and restructure it... Then having them work mostly on VITA while most of those games didn't even touch the western hemisphere and even games that did okay in Japan were kneecapped by the Vita's low install base.
Sending a top head from Santa Monica IS giving them another chance. He had to cancel a ton of projects that weren't going anywhere either.

The studio was simply a complete mess that wouldn't produce games of quality or mass appeal or both. Are they meant to just keep paying them forever?

What does Slitherhead has to do with Sony Japan? No I won't be buying day one nor have you seen me talking about this game, so might wanna try again with a better 'gotcha'...
Literally the topic of the thread is Slitterhead looking awful and justifying the restructuring of the studio into XDEV Japan and Asobi.

The guys who designed this game are all former Japan Studio devs. And it looks like yet another critical and commercial flop.

Maybe that restructuring should have had them not working on the VITA but instead making PS4 games from the very start.

When they happen to make a good PS3 game that should have been a PS4 launch title what did Sony management do? Send it out to die on the PS3 then years later they admitted they made a mistake by not making it be on PS4... And I'm referring to Puppeteer. Instead they prioritized Knack just because Cerny was attached to it 😂.

Tokyo Jungle a game that did fairly well for an AA game, never getting a sequel

Moving Gravity Rush from PS3 to solely on the VITA... Another brilliant move by Sony's upper management 🤣

I can keep going but anywho

It was all Sony Japan's Fault... Leadership was perfect

Slitterhead opens to a 60 on metacritic, but somehow this should have been the next Japan Studios game...

Or maybe Sony shouldn't listen to the kiddos who have no idea what they're talking about...

We still haven't seen GenDesign's first game since The Last Guardian. TLG came out in 2016... but people are torching Naughty Dog for not having a new game since 2020... 8 years and nothing from Team ICO.

Because it's fair to compare a first party studio, with first party support and resources for exclusive (mostly single platform) games, to an indie studio on their first try developing a multiplatform title.

It is fair.

We were all told Sony made a huge mistake. Well now the narrative is they needed Sony to make a decent game.

I don't see where the affirmations clash. Both can be true:

It was a mistake AND they needed Sony to make decent games.

Having to develop for multiple systems has a larger impact on the output than some on this forum think.

Game still looks cool
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games were getting 60s on metacritic back in the day and that was because reviewers had phenomenally bad taste.

Drakengard 3 also got middling reviews which were semi deserved but it didn't matter because the game was interesting af

Someone doesn't understand x86... this isn't true at all.

For sure more resources and QA are needed, but the reality is that this is the type of game we would have seen whether it was 3rd party or 1st party.

Japan Studio games had been janky for years. People like you just put them on a pedestal largely to tear down Western studios, but it's laughable what the quality difference is here.

Toyama said himself that Sony was interested to give him big budget but he only wants to work on a small budget games.
