FY2024 Q2 Earnings Announcement

Sony's Q2 earnings report is coming out in 4 hours (1600 JST, 200 EST)
Q2 covers the period of July to September

Things I'm looking out for specifically

  • How far behind they are on their forecast?
    • Remember their forecast for the year is 18 million units down from 21.8 million units last fiscal year
      • That's a 17.43% decrease apples to apples
      • Assuming they expect the PS5 Pro to sell at a minimum of 2 million units this fiscal year (ending march 31st) that means the expectation is that they'll sell 16 million PS5s this fiscal year, which is a drop of 26.6% YOY
      • They'll want to be at about 6.5-8 million units sold for the fiscal year
  • Whether they got a real boost from China or not
  • Whether their forecast is revised downward
  • Whether they're still selling PS5s at a loss
  • How big of a hole Concord represents in their forecast and whether or not that was filled by Astro Bot and Helldivers 2's continued success
  • How much of a sales boost they'll get from Wukong or whether Wukong was as heavily PC slanted as we expected
Q2 - 2023 numbers

Sales were 233.4 billion yen (which was a 32% increase over the previous year)
Operating Income was 6.8 billion yen (16% increase YOY)

expect to see PS5 underperforming in hardware sales compared to PS4 lifetime aligned due to lack of exclusives and high prices, expect to see 400M dollars in losses due to Concord + Firewalk and Neon Koi getting shut down.

They missed their forecast by 3+ millions last year. It's so embarrassing if they miss it again and have to lower it to 15 or 16 millions 😬

The tweet from Mochizuki Bloomberg will get more attention than whatever they say at that meeting. Astrobot will be their saving grace.

The Pro launch came and went with no hype at all. The big news today was all about Xbox. Kojima did good work with his husbando Phil, their plan to hijack the launch went flawlessly. Kudos 👏

the funniest part is that PS5 was carried by Final Fantasy 16 in the first half of last year, they won't have Final Fantasy exclusivity anymore with SE stating they'll ship future games across all platforms in the future, including competitors such as Xbox and Nintendo, without SE to fill the gaps in first party releases every year, it'll be very interesting to see how the sales of the console react 🤗 but hey, guess we'll have some Marathon and FairGame$ to sell some consoles, right?

At 6.2 million units for the fiscal year to date. They're going to need strong PS5 Pro sales as well as strong unit sales in Q3-4 to meet their forecast.

But definitely not as bad as the doom league would suggest. They're at 75.6% of what they had YTD the previous year. Without the PS5 Pro, they're on pace for 16.48 million units sold. So to achieve 18 million units, they only need to sell 1.52 million units while maintaining the current pace of sales.

It might be to the point where you could assume they're likely to achieve higher than forecasted sales for the year, especially considering what we're seeing for rumored black Friday discounting.

Man they increase in profit are crazy…

+ Increase in hardware profitability (it got cheaper to produce).
+ Increase in 3rd-party game sales.
+ Increase in sales of network services.

Combined… +184% yoy.

spoiler alert: they won't meet their forecast for the second year in a roll
