It was Shawn Layden that struck the Insomniac deal actually then shortly after he was apparently forced out when Jim Ryan won the CEO race.

Housemarque acquisition was bidded on the success and Critical reception of Returnal... This was Shu's doing... Not Jim.
No, Shawn Layden never was CEO of SIE or president of PS Studios. He had nothing to do with Worldwide Studios acquisitions.

He was CEO of SCEA during 4 years, so his work was sales and marketing in NA subsidiary of SIE (the time he hosted the E3). After that he was chairman of Worldwide Studios (now PS Studios) only for a year, when the president of PS Studios was Shuhei Yoshida.

SIE/PS Studios entered agreement to acquire Insomniac in late August 2019, with Jim Ryan as CEO since February/April 2019 and Shuhei Yoshida as president of Worldwide Studios preparing to be replaced by Hermen Hulst in November 2019 and move to build and lead PlayStation Indies.

Shawn Layden left Sony in September 2019 and now works as advisor at Tencent.

In November 2019 the Insomniac acquisition was closed with Jim Ryan as CEO of SIE and Hermen as head of PS Studios, same people in charge who acquired Housemarque in June 2021, when Yoshida already was at PlayStation Indies for almost 2 years.

Housemarque has been releasing many successful games and with critical reception since 1993, and since 2007 released several PS exclusive small games, some published by Housemarque and some by Sony. It wasn't only Returnal, they have a long history of classics.

Just what I was hoping for. Microsoft is actively taking away games from PlayStation, meanwhile PlayStation is buying useless shit that may or may not benefit us within the next decade. Hopefully they'll buy another developer that hasn't released any games yet!
Don't forget they bought Bungie only for them to refuse to make Playstation exclusives and have a PR disaster a year later! All while missing revenue targets.

The fact Marathon it’s not an exclusive is beyond funny and embrassing. Phil obviously laughed his ass off

Sony looks so weak and insecure

Shawn was Chairman of Worldwide Studios and yes it was him who sealed the Insomniac buyout this isn't even a hidden fact, it is is well known. Crediting Jim Ryan is hilarious 🤣.

I didn't need the long history recollection, thank you I'm very aware of everything.

Here is Shawn stating he closed the deal since you know he was the CEO of Worldwide Studios at the time

And the Housemarque buyout was set in stone by Shu, not Hermen.

Building new studio with excelent talent are sorely needed that should be the priority right now

Wrong.

As I stated above, Shawn wasn't working at Sony when they closed the deal. And he never was CEO of SIE or Worldwide Studios.

Jim Ryan was the CEO of SIE both when they entered agreement for the deal and when they closed it.

Shuhei Yoshida was president of WWS when they entered agreement and got replaced by Hermen has head of PS Studios before they closed it.

Shawn was chairman of WWS when they entered agreement and unemployed when they closed it.

And the Housemarque buyout was set in stone by Shu, not Hermen.
Wrong.

Hermen replaced Yoshida as head of PS Studios in November 2019. Jim and Hermen acquired Housemarque in June 2021.

In 2021 Yoshida was in PlayStation Indies, which is part of 3rd party relations team and not of SIE publishing or PS Studios.

Yep, Xbox still gets the exact same games from Bungie because they refuse to act like a Playstation studio, while Phil has already shown us Zenimax and non COD Activision games will most likely be exclusive. He seems like the clear winner in all of Sony's acquisitions.

It's called business and they bought a GaaS studio and it makes no sense to limit revenue.. Zenimax games have pretty much bombed or underperformed cutting out Playstation... Pete Hines certainly wasn't amused by this move and was vocal about it.

Either way Destiny was also multiplat yet it became a system seller for PS4... Why do you guys assume Playstation still won't treat the games as exclusives? It's all about Marketing in the end.

You presented proof and he still denies it. There's no point.

You keep typing up all this for no reason? Lol

There was a restructuring that happened in November that changed how things were done within SIE. Prior to that Shu would report to Shawn Layden... After Hermen was appointed... Jim made it so Hermen would report to him since they had consolidated some key roles which is where all the current problems they are now having started... Ironically.

And I'm not asking you Shawn Layden the CEO of Worldwide Studios got the deal done. Insomniac agreed to be acquired August 2019... They went through the regulatory process and it was OK'd in November 2019... For someone who loves to act like they know it all, you'd think you'd be aware of all this basic stuff.

You're delusional if you think the CEO of Playstation is the one going around meeting with Studios and cutting deals.

As for Housemarque... Returnal was pitched to Shu in late 2016.... It was in development for well over 4+ years... Imagine thinking it was that Hack Hermen who came in and secured them... When it wasn't a secret Playstation already let them know they are open for a buyout depending on how they game fared in the end.

Good Day!

Bullshit, there was no restructuring.

In October 1st it was announced that Shawn had left Sony.

In November Shuhei, the president of WWS, wanted to do some initiatives to support indies, so moved away from being the president of Worldwide Studios to create PlayStation Indies and Hermen replaced him as head of Worldwide Studios.

Worldwide Studios (now PS Studios) always has been a SIE subsidiary/division, so its head/president always reported to the SIE (previously known as SCE) CEO.

And I'm not asking you Shawn Layden the CEO of Worldwide Studios got the deal done.
Shawn never has been CEO of Worldwide Studios, he was chairman. The president was Shuhei.

You're delusional if you think the CEO of Playstation is the one going around meeting with Studios and cutting deals.
The CEO of PlayStation doesn't exist.

If you mean the CEO of SIE (Jim Ryan, not Shawn), he obviously decides, approves and signs the SIE acquisitions (as it was the case of Insomniac or Housemarque), not the janitor. In the case of acquiring studios for PS Studios, he obviously does that with the head of PS Studios (Hermen).

Obviously with people working for them from finances, legal, strategy, etc. departments.

Yes, Shuhei greenlighted Returnal, but this has nothing to do with the acquisition. Housemarque has been making games published by Sony since 2007.

Hermen acquired them in June 2021, they started to talk about the acquisition a year before (mid 2020) and Shuhei left the position in November 2019.

Here Hermen and the head of Housemarque explain thay they started to talk about the acquisition a year before they signed it (so Shuhei wasn't there), and that Housemarque in fact started to work for Sony 15 years before, in 2006, helping Hermen fit Killzone Liberation in a PSP.

Eh I don't like mass consolidation.

If publishers thrived under Sony, yea maybe it good, but I doubt

No publishers merger every benefit consumers, or even the publishers being acquired benefit. Square, Namco all got degraged post-merger
