The premise of my thoughts here are that Sony is reaching heights we haven't seen in gaming since Nintendo in the 80s, where the master system and the Atari 5200 weren't really competition for the NES. That scrutiny plus the internet is why you see so much backlash towards Sony for EVERYTHING they do. Release an unsuccessful game, people will talk about it for months if not years, rather than just moving on to the next game. Launch a premium console and people will make fools of themselves to downplay it with PC builds that have no ram, no operating system, a small storage drive, and no keyboard/mouse, or gamepad.
There was a popular refrain that Sony has no games.
This year alone Sony has released two games that will go down as two of the greatest achievements in the generation. Helldivers 2 (a possible GOTY contender) which may end up being their best-selling game of all time and Astro Bot (a near lock for GOTY) which may be one of their best designed games of all time. On top of that they published Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, and will release Until Dawn and Lego Horizon Adventure.
And as a console platform holder delivered massive games that were exclusive for one reason or another in Black Myth Wukong (potentially a GOTY contender) and FF7 Rebirth (another GOTY contender)
What other company across gaming released two GOTY contenders this year?
Last year they released Spider-Man 2, which is going to be one of the best-selling games of the generation and was also a GOTY contender.
Since 2020, what company has more GOTY contenders than Sony?
2020 - TLOU2 wins GOTY, Ghost of Tsushima is nominated.
Nintendo, Square Enix and Bethesda both get 1 nomination
2021 - Sony gets another nomination with Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart (3)
EA wins, Bethesda gets another nomination Nintendo gets another nomination (2), Capcom gets nominated
2022 - Sony gets two more nominations with Horizon Forbidden West and God of War Ragnarok(5)
FromSoftware wins GOTY with Elden Ring, Nintendo gets another nomination (3)
2023 - Sony gets another nomination with Spider-Man (6)
Larian wins with Baldur's Gate, Nintendo gets two more nominations (5) and Capcom gets one more (4)
These don't even include other award winning games like Returnal (Best Action game 2021) and Gran Turismo 7 (Best Sport/Racing Game 2022) or Demon's Souls.
What gaming company is putting out more and better games than Sony? What company is as consistent?
Sony puts out a game like Astro Bot and it doesn't count because it doesn't have hyper realistic graphics? So why do all these Nintendo games count every year?
I would love to see what other company is killing it year in and year out. Companies like CDPR, FromSoftware, Larian, get away with putting out major games every 5+ years (excluding DLC, which wouldn't count for Sony). What did Larian do before BG3? Divinity 2, a game that if Sony had released people wouldn't care about.
CDPR hasn't released a new game (DLC again doesn't count) since December 2020... why no hate threads for them, but Naughty Dog who only released a game a few months before gets constant hate, but have at least put out some remasters and remakes, as well as free content for TLOU.
The PS5 is selling nearly as fast as the PS4 under unbelievable circumstances, yet it's apparently not enough?
People desperately need to chill out.
