Do these marketing deals even do anything? Sounds like a waste of money.

In the case of GTA6 yes and no. Yes, because of the hype around the game. So it's obvious you want your name linked to it.

But on the other hand, GTA6 is releasing on two platforms only for now, and one of them isn't relevant anymore.

Unless they already know GTA6 might be a launch title for Switch 2. In that case marketing is necessary.

It can imply to the casuals watching those ads that the game is only available on one console.

Now secret marketing deals...

Involve no marketing or any benefits to the platform holder.

Companies wouldnt pay millions of dollars for marketing rights if they didnt. Especially games like FIFA, COD, and GTA.
System sellers are usually exclusives. Doesn't mean much when it's available everywhere. Unless they directly market the Pro advantages, with specifics.

If it is true it'll be worth it just being able to slap on GTA6 onto the ps5 box.

That type of deal will also prevent Xbox from being able to do the same.

At this point, does Sony even need to do this? Xbox has a foot in the grave and not even a GTA marketing deal would change that for that dying brand.

So you're basically saying Sony should leave the back door open for Microsoft to sweep in and land a marketing deal?

You never count someone out until they're actually out. Otherwise that's just hubris that'll bite you in the ass. In any case, a marketing deal with R* for GTA6 is also a good show of force by SIE, to remind folks why they're the market leader in console gaming.
