Square Enix executives tell investors that the company will continue its current "multi-platform strategy" in the coming years.

Unlike publishers like Take-Two or Electronic Arts, Square Enix is a rather flexible video games company that doesn't feel it has to release every game on every platform. The Japanese publisher has a different definition of multi-platform: Instead of launching its games on every system, Square Enix likely picks the best fit for its games based on a number of factors, including total installed base, mass-market appeal, and of course, which platform-holders would pay a premium.

This often involves signing exclusivity deals that lock Square Enix's heaviest-hitting titles to PlayStation. We've seen a number of recent Square Enix games skip Xbox, including Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which cannot come to Xbox due to the terms of Sony's exclusivity deal, and Final Fantasy 16, which may also be locked to PlayStation in a similar fashion. It's not just PlayStation, though; Square Enix will indeed sign deals with both Nintendo and PlayStation at the same time--Octopath Traveler II, for example, is not available on Xbox.

Square Enix's presence on Xbox isn't nonexistent, though. The publisher released the Chrono Cross remaster, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origins and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion on Xbox. Square Enix also launched the DioFIELD Chronicle on Xbox as well. Let's not forget that Kingdom Hearts is also available on Xbox, and that there's a few titles on Xbox Game Pass, including Dragon Quest Builders 2.

This brings us to recent comments from Square Enix's executive team. Management says that the publisher will continue its current strategy moving forward. It's not outright said that Square Enix will make more exclusivity deals, but this is what the company is currently doing, so we should expect that to continue.

Here's a quick Q&A excerpt from the firm's recent 9-month earnings report:

Q: What is your platform strategy for your forthcoming new titles?

A: We intend to maintain the multi-platform strategy that we have adopted to date.

The company says that it still has many more games in development that could be roped into this release structure, including of course Final Fantasy 16, which has been confirmed as a PlayStation exclusive for the first six months.

Makes sense.
They realize some games sell in determined platforms and not in others… so what the point to work in platforms you won’t sell.

Of course that is a game by game decision and probably benefit more PlayStation and Nintendo.

Plus they already said when they work with exclusivity with PlayStation they have all the support team to make the game works best on that platform.

That is support is a big deal for a lot os studios.

How can they get away with this? The regulators need to stop Sqenix, do they not know MS is the under dog and needs all the help it can get?

Jim Ryan and his f***ing money hats are ruining gaming for the gamers!

Sony should just buy Sqenix already.

Article looks like it was written by a user from this forum :ROFLMAO:

This is the only thing the actual briefing talks about.

Careful, they have been very pro-ABK deal over there..... as far as I have read.

The actual article doesn't make any mention of them continuing deals with any platform.

We need to found what the forum ID for that tweek town author is for such a salacious headline. :ROFLMAO:

Tweaktown is a retard, I can pretty much guarantee you Nintendo did not sign an agreement allowing OT2 on Playstation but not Xbox. Instead SE simply decided that Xbox's market was not viable. They literally say they target titles to better fit certain platforms, nothing to do with either Sony or Nintendo buying access there.

Have any of their titles sold well on Xbox? Might be time to pull the plug for good. Any money expended there to port titles over, even at a profit, could likely better be spent on improving existing or creating new PS5 titles.

That was sold off to Embracer, right?
No, S-E retains publishing rights to Just Cause, which has always been made by an outside company, Avalanche Studios. They also retained their indie publishing deals. Those were both the only two things making money and the only two which didn't have in-house studios and thus made the cut.

I think its a complete waste of money sony moneyhatting square titles FF would still get 80% plus sales on playstation even with an xbox version and the rest of squares titles always seem to sell poorly locking out other platforms doesn't help at all.

None of the SquareEnix games on Xbox One or Series have sold well, including a 90/10 split for Final Fantasy Type-0 HD and, from what I have read, they didn't even rack up many GamePass downloads for the titles that were put on there, so it is a TOTAL waste of resources to port to Xbox.
