Steam now tells gamers up front that they're buying a license, not a game

Sweaty PC nerds were stealing all their games well before this was an issue
It's not theft if you never owned it and by the sounds of it, all digital 'purchases' are just license rental.
Besides, it's not stealing because the act doesn't involve removal of goods from one party, it's copying a digital file, like taking a photo of the Mona Lisa.

Not true at all.

Does It Play has a great list of all games playable on PS5 without a day one patch. Spoiler: it's the vast majority of them.

Not true look at psn you will see the vast majority of games are either indie titles that have no physical release and are only available as digital purchases. Sony also pushes out ps5 console firmware and driver updates for dualsense controllers all the time which without those even your single player games don't work properly. Even your controllers need internet connections nows to stay compatible now with the latest games.

This is a lie. You are not prevented from playing a game with a Dualsense that you didn't upgrade.

It's 100% true street fighter 6 had one to reduce input lag for combo strings, Polyphony has pushed three out this year to increase accuracy so controller players are more able to compete with wheel players on gt7, dragons dogma launched with input lag that was fixed with controller updates, cdpr fixed controller aiming on cyberpunk with a controller update when phantom liberty launched, sony patched in dualsense support for pc. A lot of ps5 games have had trigger support added through patches and controller firmware so yes it is essential to have the latest firmware on your controllers.

None of what you say implies that you would be blocked from launching a game, even with worse input lag or whatnot, unless you upgrade the controller firmware. Triggers and trigger feedback have always been a core feature of the controller and there never has been a controller firmware update to "enable them".

Games are frequently patched to improve input latency or use controller features they didn't use before, but that's games, not the controller. Again, offline games can stay in a lower version (even it is an inferior experience) if the console is offline.

Controller updates are not mandatory. The OS recommends them as soon as they become available, but they can be skipped. And keeping the console offline means you don't even receive those notifications.

Stop spreading lies.

SIE strongly recommends always installing the latest update for your apps and controllers as soon as possible after the update is released. Failure to do so might expose your controller to security risks and or/might compromise the proper functioning of your controller with certain titles due to improvements made on developer feedback with playstation 5 software including full trigger support on previously unsupported titles.

Sony words not mine.

Literally nothing changed. It was always this way with digital stuff. Now you are losing your shit because the word license is written in front of you? 🤡

Some people on here are dinosaurs who owns a console in 2024 and doesn't have internet connection or a psn sub. PC gamers have been buying digital for about 20 years they don't bitch about buying games on disc.

most ps5 disc based games are just unlock codes to download and install the digital files and even if the full game is on the disc it still needs patch updates to play the latest builds.
That’s absolutely not true. Most games are fully playable start to finish without patches. And after you patch you can still play offline.
I can fight radahn 1.0 again!

Anyway. This website.
93% of ps5 discs play offline. 97 even but that 4% might be too buggy.
69% dont even require any download for game to be playable start to finish. Add 17% to that for cases like hogwarts where you need patch to go past the first level.

And ps4 numbers are even higher. This claim that games are jest codes is bs. It’s just for cod and sports games.

Yes, and Sony is warning about all kinds of nasty consequences in order to cover their ass legally, but they do not prevent you from playing with an outdated controller firmware.

That doesn't make what you claimed above any less of a lie.

I was there when Steam launched alongside Half-Life 2 (which I bought as a disc), and it wasn't pretty. For days, many people were unable to play the single player game they bought and should been able to.

Rubbish. Blu-rays are very low cost to produce in bulk nowadays.

But you know, the upkeep of servers that your digital only costumers depend on to access the content they do not own and can lose access to at any given moment probably is cheaper than that.

It's another #SonyToo tactic.🤷‍♂️

Boswollox is a PC gamer and you can buy digital games on consoles since the beginning in 1972. PSN sells as many digital games as Steam so I don't know what you're on about.

Are you trying to get a price for most bullshit posts in the same day?

Digital games in 1972 when the internet was only invented in the 90s I remember all those atari 2600 games available down a phone line oh wait... You might want to do a bit of research on consoles in the 70s,80s and 90s before you make time travel statements like that.

Losing my shit? Like you said, literally nothing has changed. If you're retarded enough to believe you own a piece of digital code, you're retarded.

Water is wet. What point are you trying to make? If it's that pc digital is somehow bad, it is, it's all bad. The difference is I can pay three quid for a game on steam, not seventy.

What if the game needs a day one update/patch just because it's playable doesn't mean it won't be a broken buggy mess

Have you visited the site I linked? Every game has a description.
In my experience, rarely any game is as buggy not to be finishable without patching.
But not sure what that changes. You can patch the game.
If you won't be able to patch the game, you won't be able to download or authorize it too anyway (if donwloaded).
In that case even broken 1.0 version is better than no version.

Well I hope it doesn't go that way completely because it's a huge part of gaming culture, especially for many core gamers.

They have multiplayer and multiple discs with only one being needed to actually play the game and others just being for loading.

It's less of an issue than the physical gaming haters make it out to be.

I don't know why some want to kill physical so much. It's an amazing option that only offers more choice and competition.
On Playstation the main issue is that there's no choice so you're beholden to Sony. I think it's easier on Xbox to get codes on third-party marketplaces, and on PC you have key sites.

I think for most they don't want to kill physical gaming they just see the move to digital as inevitable. My question how will Sony support those physical purchases, or will they just expect customers to rebuy digitally?
