The Gamepass Effect in film: The Netflix revolution is, for now, one of the most successful profit-destroying interventions in modern business history

I hate Netflix but my family uses it so I can't cancel it. It's full of trash and the most expensive streaming service by far.

I was the same way but in our case with Disney+ or Disney- as I call it...

I eventually got it cancelled though when they all stopped using it.

I’m honestly really happy with Paramount plus.

I love Pluto.tv, the free paramount thing. Just a slew of classic television shows and shit that play non stop, a couple of minimal commercials that just feel like tv commercials, why would I pay for modern trash when paramount is giving me a whack load of free pre-clownworld entertainment. I think right now it has a channel that just plays all of the mission impossible movies in order, on repeat. This is exactly the kind of thing I need and I'm shocked they offer this for free.

Interesting parallel.

So the only ones that can survive the subscription service turn are those that are massive conglomerates.

Japanese companies should be prudent and look to unite.

It has become a reality TV and documentary service in our household. The better TV is on HBO or AppleTV

On Netflix there are like Korean romance drs take like 1/3 of the contents.

It reminds me of the 90s when my grandmother, aunts and mother got nothing to watch besides from those crappy romance dramas that last for hundred of episodes.

Those would be the equivalent of 1000 hours of content game nowadays.

Yep, the Netflix model allows them to spend billions of dollars to get exclusive access to hundreds of international shows, but games take much longer to make and are much more expensive. Games also take longer to get through than shows, so its makes more sense to just buy a game once and enjoy it for months rather than throw all your money away on gamepass for several months.

If they stop making dog shit woke movies that no one wants, they will make money again.
Subscription sucks because they think they can shove any shit they make down your throat.

Another person using the dogwhistle woke with nothing of substance to add. Sony is one of the most inclusive gaming companies out there so I can't imagine how much you lose your shit at their success.

Same situation here, I would not pay for it if it was up to me. It's way more expensive than other services, it forces you into higher tiers to get 4K and started to police who it using your account.

HBO max has way better content and doesn't do any of that.

From a customer perspective, I think the subscription model has had an excellent effect on TV. Just with Netflix, we've had big-budget TV shows, oscar worthy movies, and stellar documentaries. Hope Game Pass has the same effect on video games.

and all of the things you named for tv were literally unsustainable and never made a profit, all so the industry could chase user growth numbers. now that the bottom has been pulled out you will enjoy your thousandth reality show on netflix and endless cancellations. gamepass has been out since 2018 and has not made one positive contribution to the types of games being made

There were also terrible reality TV shows and cancellations under the old model. Why are you quick to forget that? The difference between then and now is that we have higher-quality tv shows being produced right now with more creative risks being taken. Game Pass hasn't been around long enough for us to see tangible results given how long the average game development time is, that is why I said I was hopeful that we'll get the same effect we got on subscription TV. There are signs of it. Microsoft is green-lighting a wide range of game genres from competitive shooters to RTSs to Simulations to Survival games & to all sorts of RPGs, as an example Josh Sawyer at Obsidian said it would have been harder to pitch Pentiment under a purchase model than under a sub-model. Comparatively, as development time continues to lengthen and development costs continue to increase, most of the big-budget gaming studios seem to be chasing mass market appeal which means they are taking less creative risk, that's why we are seeing a lot of linear action games with padded out game time(has to justify the $60/$70 price tag), or live service games.

Pentiment was in productions before they were bought. it is nothing to do with gamepass or subs service.

Breaking Bad, The Wire are low quality? like we can make huge list of these low quality series 😂

I don't know where in my comment I said Breaking Bad and The Wire were low quality. We don't even have to go subjective on this topic. Objectively bigger budgets are going to various projects, from animation to documentaries. That increases the chances of higher-quality shows being produced now vs then.

I quoted the director of Pentiment, a lot can happen in a games development cycle, maybe the final result would have been of lesser quality if they didn't convince MS to invest in it.

Its funny that people think that Netflix/streaming services are driving the collapse in film and especially tv revenue. As opposed to, you know, the internet. I can't think of the last time I binged out on random tv shit- why on earth would I with the internet around? Now a show has to actively grab me, and only one does.
