The Last Of Us drew a healthy number for HBO on Sunday night.

The videogame adaptation, starring Pedro Pascal, drew 4.7M viewers across linear and HBO Max.

It marked the largest debut after House of the Dragonsince Boardwalk Empire launched in 2010.

The Game of Thrones spinoff made history last year by premiering with 9.986M viewers across linear and HBO Max – the largest audience for any new original series in the history of pay cabler.

It's a little surreal listening to mainstream radio and other media, that usually barely mention games or gaming....and now they are talking non-stop about how great the show is.

It's definitely broken through that barrier that was there preventing video game adaptions from being taken seriously and as far removed from anything to do with making it as I am...I can't help but feel proud in some way.

If they can carry this for 2-3 seasons and not drag it out too much, it will be one of the all time greats.

Saw it today and they did an amazing job. It's a great adaptation: it gets the vibes of the game and adapts it perfectly to other medium. I think people who doesn't know anything about the game will like it as tv show.

Also, the actors did an amazing job, they nailed it. Very suprised with Pedro and Anna Torv, they really feel like Joel and Tess. I'd have prefer Joel's daughter being blonde, but the girl they did choose is so cute and does a great job. The only half issue for me is the cast of Bella, who does a great job because she's a great actress, but I see her and unlike with Joel or Tess, I don't see Ellie there. She looks too different.

Also, I think Gabriel Luna doesn't look like Tommy at all, but in that case I don't care because I thought he was a bland character in the games. In fact I like it because Gabriel is so badass so I'm sure we'll like him in the tv show way more than in the games.

I love to see how they nailed the artstyle and the vibe of the games and also like to see they followed very strictly basically 1:1 important scenes from the game but also added some extra stuff here and there.

Man Jim's vision to expand the PS portfolio and mindset to a wider audience is paying dividends....

1.) because PS believes in quality work above all else. People love quality work
2.) It's the only way to grow PlayStation beyond the same 100-150M demographic from all past gaming generations....

Jim should be the star of the new Kickass movie, he is slaying all oncomers out there. Someone Gif Jim-Samson slaying all oncomers with the jawbone of an ass.......

Some thoughts
  • Story additions did not detract. If anything, they help world building even further;
  • The actress for Sara is not a bad choice and inconsequential in the grand scheme of things;
  • Pedro Pascal is an amazing cast. Not only he's an incredible actor, but he embodies Joel and looks a bit like him;
  • Bella Ramsay surprised me. She does not look like Ellie, but she plays the part to perfection. She also sounds a lot like Ellie. Everything is there.
  • Story changes seem to have been made for pacing reasons. IMO they don't detract from the experience at all.
Excited for the second episode. If the series keeps the standard set by the first episode, it's going to be an absolutely incredible series. If they decide to keep going with more seasons, I'd love to see a series that covers the in between of part 1 and 2, and then a couple of seasons focusing on part 2.

Even news sites most focused politics in Brasil are talking about the show and using the words “phenomenon”.

Where it’s at.
Thanks to Bell Canada’s amazing infrastructure powering Crave, the Canadian “service” that HBO stuff is on here, not having enough capacity, plenty of Canadians didn’t get to watch episode 2 last night.

Thanks a lot, Bell, you worthless fucks!

This. And that professor Ibu's acting was phenomenal. The way her hands started shaking after finding out that there were 14 missing workers at the same location where the 1st infected lady was found

Yeah, the directing was really good. The clicker introduction had an incredible vibe as well, it was very creepy.

The extra bits of lore are amazing and the changes from the game as of now are pretty fine. Tess death was amazing and better than the game’s version tbh

I saw the episode 2 yesterday and really liked it. Even with the physical differences I start to see Ellie there, Bella is doing a great job as expected. Pedro and Anna as usual they nailed it. I've been surprised by the direction of Druckmann and the budget bump: the environments and CG are way better than in the pilot. I also loved the intro.

I love to see that it feels very close to the game, very respectful and made with love for the original but at the same time expanding the lore and making some small changes.

The two hours of this show that have been released so far takes a massive, steaming shit all over the entirety of The Walking Dead and all of its spin-offs.

The audio design for the clicker sequence was absolutely incredible.

Agreed! And from a production standpoint, I'm absolutely loving how the world is being portrayed and how good the CGI looks overall. There were a couple of instances last episode where you could see the green screen (lighting didn't quite match), but most of them are up to hollywood standards, which is actually amazing considering this is a series and not a movie.

Trust me, it’s even more impressive for someone who lived in the city where most of the exteriors were shot to see how seamlessly they blended the real buildings with the CGI.

I can imagine it indeed. I wonder if they are also using the same tech as the Mandalorian for some shots. I suspect a few scenes, especially more indoor ones, use that tech. But I'll absolutely admit I've not heard anything that points in this direction, it's just based on previous experience working in TV.
