Console war angle incoming:

Sony games: we argue about them not being the very best in all aspects.

Nintendo games: we argue about them being the most playable/fun on quirky hardware.

Xbox games: we argue that they may not be the worst after all, say least they have Gamepass and VRS 2!
What is funny is that these guys have this obsession about Sony games being fake, they just can't believe how good they are compared to what they are used to play. It happened to Horizon FW recently as well.

But they have no problem with MS releasing a completely fake Halo trailer trying to pass it as an engine trailer and then they make excuse for a game that it obviously really ugly and ancient looking or a game like Starfield that already looks like ass.

I usually don't comment on threads, but I have to comment on this one.

Assassin's Creed and Shadow of Mordor don't hold a candle to TLOU 2. I'm including all Assassin's Creed games.

And I don't know what the right answer is, but TLOU 2 is on a league of it's own compared to any of the Ass Creed games and SoM.
That's definitely subjective. SoM does have some incredible interpolation between moves to where the animation curve is continuous and not discontinuous. I've no doubt TLOU 2 has some incredible tech but 'holding a candle' is a bit much. My definition of 'not holding a candle' would be comparing TLOU 2 to a game like Gears of War.

I guess it's the definition of free flowing combat that needs to be explained. Do we only need to include games that free flow in combat? Ex: Batman Arhkam series, or Spiderman, or Shadow of Mordor?
Free flowing means

The animation curves are quadratic/exponential and are continuous from one transition to another transition without the derivatives being discontinuous at the combined curves.

Well the king of that is still Red Dead Redemption 2, at a cost of gameplay snappiness. Everything feels very heavy and slow because of all the animation blending. It's a bit unfair to compare very different games with very different styles of gameplay like this.

If we're talking about on a pure technical level, I don't think there is a match for TLOU2/RDR2. The blending is just one small fraction of the quality of the animation in the game, there are numerous underlying systems that drive different animations, sounds and textures, the breathing system and the heartbeat system are two of those.

Shadow of Mordor is a game with amazing animation, but I think Spiderman is at least on the same level. Both are very snappy and with excelent gameplay fluidity, but suffer from the same "teleportation" that is not really an issue or a problem, it's just inherent from their style of gameplay. You'll get the chance to try out Spiderman on PC and see for yourself.

also the environmental traversal in shadow of mordor/war is second to none , the way you can climb walls , jump over obstacles smoothly , use stealth is superb.
it makes the latest assassins creed look and feel dated in that department

That's why I was impressed by it. The Parkour is awesome and blends seamlessly.
