games running at native 240p but outputing 720p thanks to DLSS and the results are... great? the PS handheld in development is estimated to have 2teraflops of GPU power, with PSSR integration, they can lower native resolutions to 480p and output 1080p in a 7 inch screen and it'll run at 60fps with decent quality thanks to PSSR

I think portable devices should use a 1080p (exactly 19220x1080p, to match tvs) screen instead of 720p or 800p.

And that the scaling should be from 960x540 to 1920x1080p. To make an exactly 2X zoom for 1080p and not starting from a too low resolution, in order to improve the quality of the scaling.

But well, I assume they won't need to be that aggresive.

the upcoming PlayStation handheld

LMAO no one would give a fuck
Japan and Handheld enthusiast would. A reminder that the PSP sold close to 80m units. What had PS Vita killed was the lack of 1st party software and newer games. Plus overpriced and proprietary storage cards. Also a PS6 Handheld would definitely be popular in Japan and Asia, countries where people work a lot and prefer comfy entertainment...

Oh wow 80 million! How much did its direct competitor sold instead? PlayStation has no exclusive that appeal to the japanese market anymore, it would be a complete waste of time.

Not if the same games running on the PS6 handheld variant. PlayStation always had the AAA and smaller Japanese games. PlayStation was never about 1st-party. Their strength is the 3rd party support. This was even highlighted several times by Sony executives. Give Japanese the opportunity to play Final Fantasy, Persona, Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts, NIS games, Falcom games etc. on a portable device native and the problem for interest on such a device will be solved. Anyway I know about lots of upcoming and exciting Japan XDEV projects (not revealed) coming to PS consoles in the future. Also Sony will likely (my prediction) buy some studios in Japan, Korea in 2025. Though no publisher.

Japanese players will be able to play all of those on Switch 2. And your made up future projects of course do not count.

The Switch 2 and PlayStation handheld will represent an interesting look into the Japanese market.

Having been to Japan 3x in my life, I've never once seen anyone playing a Switch. It seems like people are playing in their homes more, especially if they're not trying to take up the TV or trying to play in a bedroom.

I think that is why the PS Portal has had some success there.

If the PS Handheld can deliver higher performance than the Switch 2 and the Switch 2 is more than 62,000 yen, I think there is going to be some competition there.

PS handheld already has a huge advantage over the Switch 2 with many games that aren't available yet on Switch. That won't be the case forever though. I think Sony would be wise to drop their handheld by the end of the year there.

According to what MLID said with rumors, that could be the timeline. But given that games are no longer releasing in large part on PS4, I wonder how things will come to fruition if pretty much every PS5 game needs to be patched in order to work with it and if PSSR will need to be applied to all of these games to get them working well with it.

Dragon Quest 3 2D-HD remake for example isn't coming out for PS4 even though its coming out for Switch. Honkai Rail Star is not on PS4, neither is Zenless Zone Zero, Apex Legends, or Valorant. These are exactly the games you need running on PS Handheld.

The rumors that Sony will releasing an handheld with the only capability of playing PS4 titles are false. It doesn't make an sense for Sony to release in 2026, 2027 an handheld with only ability to play PS4 titles. The PS4 is on a dying branch and it would be outdated tech. The newest rumors also shared directly by Tom Henderson, are that Sony will release a standard home console of the PS6 + a portable sku of the PS6. With slightly reduced framerate capability and lower resolution.

Both the Switch and Steam Deck already do this
Well, mostly. Switch doesn't have native KH games currently.

I don't care. If Tom Henderson is correct with his information leak (what I definitely do believe), then the Japanese will buy an portable PS6. The Steam Deck is too weak to run FF7R, FF16, Dragon's Dogma II (only some examples of newer releases) in a moderate performance. It runs horrible on that device. The Nintendo Switch 2 won't be for 100% be powerful. It will be weak as Base PS4. Plus even if you try to rewrite history, 7m sold PS Vita consoles were sold in Japan. Vita has a total lifetime sales of 16.7m units. The demand is there and if Sony's launches a portable PS6 sku, it will definitely sell. Your tears and malevolence won't change anything.

Ill be there day 1 for another PSP. Im sure it will sell closer to PSP than Vita and will be the only thing that increases software sales in Japan.
And it will be increase worldwide too.

I doubt Sony release something that just plays PS4 games, Steamdeck 2, Switch 2 will be playing more modern games that PS4, whether its hardware, software and a combo etc. Switch 2 less so but you know what I mean

LOL, not a chance. Shitty resolution and framerate, maybe. AI upscaling isn't magic.
but the new PS handheld will have the same amount of power of a base PS4, a console that runs games like Horizon Forbidden West and God Of War Ragnarok at 1080p, if they lower the native resolution of next gen games to 480p/560p and output a 1080p with PSSR it's more than enough quality for an 8 inch screen handheld.

So far on PS5 pro I find PSSR to not be very stable at distance subpixel objects ( and that already based on high resolution base). Only in motion. The image is 4K sharp ( maybe better) when not moving.

I am not sure how AI can output good stable image from a resolution that is lower than 720p. Might look good when static, but will be horrible in motion.

This is just PSSR 1.0...
It still has a long way to get in a stable state. Remember Nvidia needed years to get DSSL where it stands today.
