Rebooting within the continuity is a thing, more seen in comics than movies, and is usually called a "soft reboot". Going back to the beginning and starting a new continuity is a "hard reboot".

Examples: Superman was hard rebooted in the mid-80s in the Man of Steel miniseries, and the Superman comic restarted from a new issue #1 after the miniseries. Many aspects of the characters were tweaked, and made more realistic, but it was a clean slate for relationships and plot lines.

Batman was soft rebooted in 1987 by the Batman: Year One four-part storyline, which was not a separate series, just a four-month run in the mainline book. There were some details about Batman and other characters fleshed out more than in the past, and some longtime blanks filled in, but the continuity was untouched overall and the issue numbers didn't reset to #1, but going forward some characters were different than they used to be.

Reboots doesn't continue a story sequence of a franchise.... that is why Sequel work exists.

Well, maybe if you don't know what they mean?

Reboot: they start a series or movie from scratch, while keeping the name. That involves a new scenario, cast, cast, etc.

Remake: it says it in the name. They try to stick to the original receppy (obviously there will be some differences, like these days everything and everyone is gay), but you get a new cast, but the expectation is that it's the same movie made by a different team.

Love the misunderstanding of both concepts plus the homophobic take. Obviously reported.

It uses the ending of GoW 3 to begin GoW 2018 as a direct SEQUEL... It cleary doesn't fit the definition of reboot.

BTW Barlog himself says it is a sequel besides the mechanics reboot and that it should not make any sense to make a reboot.

In a recent interview with PlayStation Lifestyle, director Cory Barlog explained why making a full-on reboot wouldn’t have made sense.

Barlog said: “It’s like the first games serve as the backstory, right? And it’s like people say, ‘Oh, why didn’t you start over and bring a new character?’ And I was like, but it’s like a decade of character development. You can’t. Why would you ever throw that away?”

However, the game will definitely be a sequel, or soft reboot at most, and for good reason. Reboots doesn't continue a story sequence of a franchise.... that is why Sequel word exists.

It is not like Tomb Raider 2013 where they literally reboted the series with a entry with no relation to previous games.
GoW 2018 is GoW 4 just not in name... it is a direct sequel... the continuation of Krato's saga.

Anybody that played the game knows that.

They did reboot the game mechanics yet but it is essentially a sequel. Sequels can change, add or reboot things.

GoW 2018 is a direct sequel and to be fair I won’t recommend anybody to play it without play the original trilogy… it starts already giving spoilers from GoW 3 and plot points are related to old games too.

Games aren’t just about story. It’s probably the least important part. So while God of War is a sequel … it’s definitely a reboot too by simply reinventing the gameplay.

About your first comment I’m playing Ragnarok right now and it is fully linked to previous GoW… same for GoW 2018.

Kratos talks about the events in GoW1-3 all the time with Freya, Mimir, etc… in the GoW 2018 they even compare Gods plus there are special guest too.

You're mixing a lot of very different examples.
To begin with, MK Special Forces isn't even a sequel, but a spin off.
