I would think that Microsoft has capitulated the first 2-3 years of the console release.

I think it makes better sense for them to have a really good push towards the end of the generation, in perhaps rescheduling or holding most of its games back,

They do have a lot of studios and at some point, those games do have to come out, the second half of this console generation is/should IMO what they should be aiming for.

But yer, its crazy what sony have done so far this generation, so happy i bought a ps5.

Where it’s at.
And this could end up deciding this generation for them -- and, possibly, even the next generation.
You can’t punt on the first two full years of a generation and have any hope of a comeback.

This holiday season was their last chance to establish a foothold, but with no exclusives to bring in buyers, their desperation move was cutting the price of Series S to an extreme low, and even that was met by a yawn from the market.

From here, it’s all about cutting their losses on the generation, and possibly the console business entirely.

but you can't do that. Start is really important because it set perception, expectations, positivity which helps to sell consoles and games and make your platform relevant globally.
you can't come into 3th or 4th year and hope to push good numbers, it is unrealistic. they are practically doomed for this gen.
their only way is to set up for next gen properly.

Your last line sums it up perfectly, end with a flurry into the last generation, and try and grab momentum at the start of the next.

No matter what they do, they can not fix that awful drought of no games at the start.

Microsoft are just an extremely incompetent platform holder and idiots writing op-eds handing them participation trophies for merely existing still, doesn't inspire them to step it up in ways that money can't buy.

If MS were more competent, they would have started releasing a slate of unique big games near the end of XBO leading into Series, but they got a lucky break with COVID lockdowns and the chip shortages, not to mention 2021 was a relatively light year for Sony releases (compared to 2022 or 2020, for example).

If MS wanted to establish some real gains this gen, they should've played their hands better from the 2018 - 2021 period. They cancelled too many games (Scalebound, Phantom Dust reboot, etc.), let too many slip them buy in terms of locking down brand-wise (Cuphead), and released too many poorly received games (Crackdown 3, Bleeding Edge etc.) while tentpole franchises either at best stagnated/held steady with little growth (Gears, Forza Horizon etc.) or gotten worst (Halo). A couple of decent indie-style 1P exclusives (Pentiment, Grounded) or otherwise niche releases (Flight Simulator) aren't going to be enough to make up for that. And acquiring studios & publishers does not in fact make up for it, either, despite MS probably hoping it did.

Yeah but how many fridges, nails polish, controller warmers, sitting pillows etc. did Sony launch?

How many astroturfers did they recruit since then?

How many "journalists" did they bribe?

Ha, bet you can't answer that!
Xbox fans need those controller hoodies and sweaters because they sure as hell aren’t getting any warmth from being used for games this winter!

yeah, basically they have be preparing themself for next gen by making and releasing games for end of this gen beginning of the next gens. release in momentum.
PS3 finished strong that's why even without world beaters but with decent games they cared them self into mid PS4 gen. perception of platform was strong, positivity was great.
PS did the same with PS4 gen, they end incredible strong, like epicly strong. so PS5 flies out of shelves even with with weaker 2021. they have amazing 2022, that cares them till 2024 even with weaker 2023.

TBF though, one of the reasons Sony's turnaround with PS3 went so well is because Microsoft let off the gas near the end of 360's life, focusing on Kinect instead of games for core gamers. That was a benefit for PS3 and leading into PS4, where MS basically shot themselves in the chest with XBO's early messaging and optics. Similar lack of effort from MS in terms of big core games near end of XBO's life made them look that much worst compared to Sony & Nintendo.

The problem MS is going to face towards the end of this gen, even if they actually get the big games coming regularly, is that Sony & Nintendo aren't going to be standing idle and doing nothing. They're going to continue having their major releases & exclusives, effectively blocking out a lot of whatever attention and mindshare MS could hope to garner even if they do everything right, because they'd have to go SO beyond the usual going forward that the probability of such happening is near zero. They'd need a series of monumental screw-ups from Sony and even Nintendo in order for whatever they have coming near the end of this gen, have the impact on Xbox the way the late-gen exclusives had for PS3 or PS4.

They can keep getting all these weird journalists to keep singing false praises for them in these moments where the big content isn't coming, but real gamers aren't going to resonate with that no matter how many times it's regurgitated. The actual games need to deliver, this year's going to be the test to see if they can begin making good on promises from several years ago.

Things would have ended up as they did even if MS hadn’t been sidetracked by Kinect once MS quit funding Japanese games.

Once the Japanese devs turned their attention to the PS3 fully, Xbox was just shooters and lazy PC ports.

Really good summary OP. It puts into perspective how far behind Microsoft are behind.

It's over for Microsoft this gen. By the time starfield releases, the most advanced VR headset to date will have had 6 months on the market. Not only will it be the most advanced, and years ahead of any completion on the horizon, it will be the most affordable and powered by a fixed and affordable architecture of the PS5.

VR will become a big industry and market and if the PSVR2 hits mainstream success, what will Microsoft have? All third party VR console games are exclusive to PS5. Microsoft will be 3 years behind again.

All of that is nothing compared to how far behind the software capabilities of the Series consoles are...

Tht bs about not wanting to show things 3 years out is just bs and exec talk that makes no sense. That was part of the fun of watching E3 seeing games in development, getting sneak peeks, etc.... Microsoft were the kings of only showing Forza, Halo, Gears shit in every E3 they talked and showed SOT stuff and Crackdown for numerous consecutive E3s and acted as if thy were just showing stuff tht was going to release promptly well yeah if you regurgitate shit long enough eventually it will come out!

The Last company you should ever take at face value are these charlatans lol

But yeah their output is sad in comparison.

To put bluntly, they showed all those teasers -- knowing they won't release those games in the next 4-5 years -- to mislead people, string them along, and buy Xbox based on fake promises. That was their only solution to prevent people from buying PlayStations.

MS has been doing that since the original Xbox. BC, True Fantasy Live Online, and many more games were hyped for months or years, even when MS already knew they were never going to make it to market, or were so deep in the weeds that they would be releasing a minimum viable product that bore little to no resemblance to the concept art, demo footage or vertical slices that they had shown as if the games were just going through their finishing touches.

Yep, and the latest one by Microsoft (that, of course, no gaming website or 'journalist' will talk about) is this:

Back in June, 2022, Xbox made the announcement that:
“We’re excited to share that later this year, it’s our intent to roll out the ability for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members to play, from the cloud, select games they already own or have purchased outside the Xbox Game Pass library.”

Link to the official blog post: https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2022/06/09/whats-next-for-gaming/

Of course, the feature wasn't rolled out. Moreover, they didn't even talk about it or even acknowledge that they missed the deadline. Complete radio silence.
