But over the last two years, Ryan has overseen a PlayStation shift toward “games as a service,” a popular industry buzzword referring to video games, usually multiplayer, that can be monetized over long periods of time. It’s been an uncomfortable pivot for some of Sony’s studios, which have spent the last decade building out teams of experienced developers to make big, cinematic adventure games that are played solo.

Those single-player blockbusters are still in the works (and one, Spider-Man 2, will come to PS5 in just a few weeks). But Sony’s stable of game studios, such as Naughty Dog (The Last of Us), Insomniac (Spider-Man) and Guerrilla Games (Horizon), have also been working on multiplayer service games — with mixed levels of success. Most have not been revealed yet. Some have been canceled or overhauled, such as an online game based on The Last of Us.

Game-development teams that spend years working together tend to cultivate a certain style. Often, making a drastic pivot from a familiar genre to something brand new can have disastrous results — just ask the developers of Anthem. Games as a service are particularly difficult to create, as they require a formula that gets gamers to consistently play over long periods of time, which is a very different ask than a single story.

Early last year, Ryan helmed Sony’s acquisition of Destiny-maker Bungie, one of the top service game developers in the world, in hopes of accelerating this pivot. But it took Bungie decades to develop the teams, technology and production pipelines that have made Destiny successful — and even so, they had some serious growing pains along the way. Even Bungie’s expertise has not yet been able to turn PlayStation Studios into a service-game factory.
Now, with Ryan on his way out, there are a lot of questions to ask about the strategic future of PlayStation. Some insiders are worried about the company’s lack of coherent vision, with its seemingly misplaced bets on service games, niche VR headsets and a baffling machine called the PlayStation Portal that allows people to play PS5 games on the go — assuming they’re at home, on their own WiFi and streaming from their consoles.

It’s not yet clear who will succeed Ryan. But whoever it is, they will have a tough task on their hands — and that’s before trying to avoid the ire of video-game fans.
It is basically confirmed that even Insomniac is making GAAS game

There's some flaws in that article. You don't have to be on home wifi to use Playstation portal. Even Schreier is sharing misinformation.

There's rumors that Insomniac are doing some kind of multiplayer game in addition to Wolverine, but there's nothing about whether it's GAAS. Also, who are these insiders he's talking about?

Simple they're not making all their games GAAS they are going to try a couple. If they fail on that they'll just go back to what they're known for.

I think the reason we havent seen alot of sony first party is because half of their teams started to make a GAAS game and sometime recently they realized that this isnt going to work out. Look at naughty dog, instead of a last of us 3 or new ip theyve been in development hell all generation with the last of us multiplayer. Sony need more single player studios, not more gaas nonsense.

Most of Sony's studios have been expanded into multiple teams, so one game wouldn't keep an entire studio tied up anyway since they work multiple projects at the same time. The reality is that games are taking longer and longer to make and many of their studios released games fairly recently by industry standards.

It seems like 2021 weve been hearing about this multi team thing with little to no evidence of it. Like besides insomniac, we dont see any other studio say they are working on 2 projects at the same time. Every new announcement is a Gaas this or gaas that. Maybe it is for the better jim ryan go?

Coz they are tired of all the shit that has been happening since he took over. Such as going two years with no showcase and no exciting first party game announcements, pc ports, sometimes overpricing stuff , talking about and making too many (12) gaas games . And also not making any meaningful publisher acquisitions/investments.

You don't seem to understand my post. Games take time unfortunately, especially new IP's, and yeah Guerilla games has 2 teams and SSM does as well based on articles and statements from devs from those studios. Others likely do as well. A new ceo can do several things better but they won't magically make game development happen faster, but you guys will just have to see that for yourselves.

Its been 3 years in with trailers or logos though. Something is clearly amiss.

It's just Bloomberg spreading lies and FUD over Sony again.

We know that Sony plans to invest 40-60% of their games budget on GaaS, and due to post launch content GaaS are way more expensive than non-GaaS games. Meaning, if instead of looking at investment we see at numbers of games under development these upcoming few years, there will be a big majority of non-GaaS games. We also know that out of MORE THAN 25 games they had under development in the past, only 12 were GaaS. So the majority of games were non-GaaS.

Also, regarding the 'niche' PSVR2, it may be niche but sold better on its launch window than PSVR1 as Sony estimated (unlike Bloomberg's lies said). The first news of the "baffling machine called the PlayStation Portal" is that in Japan opened preorders and very quickly sold out.

Because despite being good for profits he he didn't really give a shit about what gamers actually wanted (gamers that don't spend all their time on Fortnite, cod etc)

Are you a Bloomberg employee? Please, stop lying. They released way more than trailers and logos and confirmed to have multiple teams. As an example they also released many games players wanted, some of them announced in this period or at least some time before, under Jim Ryan as CEO.

In these 3 years, where ND released TLOU2 (fastest selling PS exclusive and most awarded game ever at the time), the Legacy of Thieves remasters, TLOUP1 and the PC ports, plus the Uncharted movie and the TV show. And they announced that they are working on multiple big games including TLOU Online and a single player game. So they are working on multiple games, being only one of them MP (pretty likely GaaS).

In these 3 years Guerrilla released HFW, its DLC, CoM (codeveloped with Firesprite, who is confirmed to be working on multiple games) and the PC port. And announced the movie, Horizon 3 and Horizon Online. So they are working on multiple games, being only one of them MP (pretty likely GaaS). They also have an Horizon tv adaptation coming.

In these 3 years Insomniac released Spider-Man Morales, Remastered, Rift Apart, their PC ports and announced Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine. So obviously work on multiple games and none of them GaaS (at least the announced ones, they have a MP project that may be a standalone game, so could be GaaS).

In these 3 years SSM released the GoW 2018 PC port, GoWR (fastest selling PS exclusive ever, co-developed with Bluepoint), and mentioned that after GoWR they'll make a GoW in other mythology, and super likely Cory and a 2nd team are working in the new IP he pitched back in 2018 after releasing GoW 2018.

Sucker Punch released GoT, GoT Legends, GoT DC and are working in at least GoT2 (and a movie adaptation). None of them GaaS.

In these 3 years Kojima Production released DS DC, its PC and even iPhone ports and announced DS2 (and a 2nd game, but this case not for Sony). None of them -at least the Sony ones- GaaS.

In these 3 years Japan Studio/Team Asobi released Astro and are working in multiple projects, including a 3D action game bigger than the Astro games (again no GaaS), and are like the other studios are growing. And theird 2nd party publishing team branched out to be the XDEV Asian offices, grew and has more games announced than ever before, and none of them (or most) seem to be GaaS, like Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade and many games like China or India Hero Project ones.

In these 3 years Polyphony released GT7 and its PSVR2 version, depending to who you ask isn't a GaaS (I say it's GaaS).

In these 3 years Housemarque released Returnal, its PC port and announced to be working on a bigger game now after being acquired.

In these 3 years Bend Studio released Days Gone PC port (the non-GaaS game they released the previous year) and announced to be working on an open world new IP that uses Days Gone stuff and has MP elements (we don't know if GaaS, but may be).

You guys with the "Sony doesn't announce games" and "everything Sony has are GaaS" and related lies (now you start with a new one, the "they didn't start with a second team") start to look like flathearthers. Yes, Sony announced many games (and even released), the big majority of them aren't GaaS and several of their teams beyond Insomniac are known to have now two teams. Open your eyes and start accepting the reality.
