A lot of these things -and other ones- were also crap when they did start. But as is happening with cloud gaming, and will happen with NFT and similar, over time they'll keep iterating and improving the related tech, the related business model, the related type of game / game design that works best there and will keep improving the overal experience and making it closer to what they consumers prefer.
So over time it will continue growing and improving to pretty likely become mainstream even if not completely replacing the previous and worse concept. Because as concept, it's better to just get a gamepad and play on your tv, tablet, phone, potato laptop or whatever you have without needing to buy a $500 console or $2000 pc to get a similar or better experience.
In the same way that people prefers to get games for free than to pay $70 for them. In the same way that they prefer to get new content and features post launch than to don't get post launch content at all. Or in the same way that they'd be able to freely sell their digital games/dlcs/in-game items.
