We'll see. When MS does 3P exclusivity deals, no one in the gaming media seems to complain and you don't see Steam fanatics & others going on about how exclusives are "anti-consumer" when anyone but Sony does them.

Only Sony's dumb enough to heavily invest in a new studio with their own tech for free, invest in a new IP and have it be one of your flagship titles that draws a lot of attention, only to then sell it off and have it release on other platforms.

If I was an investor, I'd start asking some hard questions and demanding a review of the management.

None of it makes sense. It even betrays the talk they gave about wanting to shore up more IPs. How the hell do they accomplish that when they are selling one of their more prominent IPs to a 3P?

I wonder, did Kojima also buy the rights to the modified Decima Engine alongside the IP? Meaning if SIE 1P want to use that modified engine, they have to go through Kojima Productions? This is a really dumb question to ask, but SIE are a really stupid platform holder these days so it's worth asking.

Right now I honestly just seen SIE as another multiplatform publisher who happens to have their own hardware. Meaning I've got no reason to watch their SOPs or Showcases anymore, because if they want to be viewed as a publisher, then don't rely on showing other publisher's games to boost your brand. Show me your games, SIE! Same way I look at Xbox now.

At least Microsoft had the smarts to buy two massive 3P publishers to boost their catalog, though. Even if costed them $80 billion...COD, WOW, TES, DOOM, Wolfenstein, Minecraft (older M&A but still), Fallout...they're Microsoft's now. SIE want to be seen as a publisher first? Fine.

But now they're arguably losing that battle to Microsoft and certainly Nintendo (who have a much better multiplatform strategy than either MS or SIE). And, if just talking my personal gaming preferences, for me, losing it to several other 3P publishers too.

Sony gave the Heavy Rain IP to Quantic Dream.

They kept Beyond and Detroit.

Bungie was never owned by Activision and I don’t believe the Destiny IP was ever. Just a third party deal with ABK.

Correct me if I’m wrong.
No sure about Quantic Dream.
But the PC ports where all published by Quantic Dream without Sony involvement after they split... so they split to release their own games on others platform but somehow the IP is still in Sony's hands? It doesn't make sense.
The fact they could release them on Steam ASAP when they split says to me Sony did transferred the IPs when they parted.

But Activision have the Destiny's publishing rights not Bungie.
It was transferred to Bungie when they parted way.
At the early 2019 earnings one of the question the CEO had to answer was why the company let Bungie take the Destiny IP.

BTW I say that here.

Whatever contract Kojima made with Sony was not a simple contract.

Kojima could choose any publisher to release the game on PC.
And now he could buy back the IP from Sony.

microsoft does 3rd party exclusivity deals? I thought they stopped doing that after the xbox 360 era

They also had Naraka exclusive for a year after it was already announced on PS5 and the Bethesda games 🤡

I’m sure Microsoft have learnt their lesson after acquiring Rare.

They have also seen what has happened with Tango Gameworks.
Did you notice how he hijacked the release of PS5 Pro. Everybody is talking about Xbox instead of PISSER. Good job Kojima the double agent 👏

I'm sure everyone here gets the business side of things. The contract had a clause to sell the IP back after it reaches a certain sales milestone and all that stuff. Cool. But none of them sat down and thought about how it's gonna look.

Imagine literally bringing a studio up, helping with free tech, development and marketing only to sell the IP back (or give it away, they're that dumb).

Best part? Kojima announces this on the same day as the PS Pro. Some thanks.

If Sony grabbed a homeless man off the streets, he'd do a better job at PR.

Fuck it, sell off Uncharted. You're not using it anyway.

Yep and in addition to aforementioned Stalker 2, there's:

-Falconeer
-Echo Generation (still not on PS or Switch; released in 2021)
-Ravenlok (still not on PS or Switch; released in 2023)
-Black Desert (technically was a XBO console timed exclusive)
-PUBG (XBO; similar to Black Desert)

...and there are probably a few from this gen I am not recalling ATM. But yes, MS still does 3P timed exclusive deals, yet most don't call it out. They don't keep that same energy for MS like they do with Sony.

You are correct about Ori, Quantum Break and Zoo Tycoon... they as MS's IP.
Record not sure.
Super Lucky's Tale is Playful Corp's IP.

Insomniac used to be pretty much a 2nd party developer for decades for Sony. They wanted to venture out on their own to see if they could make more money being multiplatform or working with other publishers.

Sony had no interest in putting Death Stranding 1 or 2 on Xbox, but if Kojima needs that revenue to keep his studio open, he can go for it.

It took Insomniac about 5-7 years to realize they were better off with Sony. Let Kojima figure that out for himself too.

The Sony that Insomniac worked with until 2018 is not the same Sony of today.
