You forgot PS5 only having 100 backward compatible PS4 games!

The volume of misinformation pre/post-launch is staggering. This specific rumor seems like projection in hindsight
series re first consoles in history who launched with zero exclusives. Just lol.

There's also the persistent narrative that third party exclusives and marketing deals are a Playstation invention. The ones who spread this narrative tend to leave out how prolific Microsoft were with both during the 360 gen.

Yup, it's insane how many times I have to remind posters on Twitter how MSFT had so many games like Mass Effect locked down for years... possibly Bio Shock too.

The the COD DLC deal and marketing and GT4 DLC for at least 1 year before PS3. It didn't stop there.... they had any deal going basically.

They also call it "shady" when Playstation has a deal with Square or immediately assume Playstation is involved when a game isn't announced for Xbox (like Baldur's Gate 3) and don't do the same with Xbox.

Yes, that's right!

GTA IV: The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony was locked to Xbox for 14 and 6 months respectively. Microsoft started the Xbox One generation the same way they ended the 360 era:
  • Xbox had exclusive Call of Duty content for 5 years, ending in 2015
  • The Division's first two expansions were timed exclusive on Xbox
  • FIFA Team Legends was exclusive to Xbox One for 3 years, until 2018
When Sony wrestled these marketing contracts away from Microsoft—almost overnight—the tone of the discussion changed and the label "anti-consumer" was popularized.

rRockzA.jpg

Dead Rising 4, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Roblox and Plants vs. Zombies all had some form of Microsoft exclusivity.

Titanfall was another money hat. It began life as a multiplatform game for PS3/360. Respawn chose Source Engine because, unlike some other game engines, it was well optimized for both platforms.

We were kind of interested in Source early on because it’s very familiar to our designers," said Richard Baker, a software engineer at Respawn. [...] Source also suited Respawn’s desire to hit a constant 60 frames per second on both the Xbox 360 and the PS3, where other third-party engines weren’t up to the task. (Polygon)

Fast forward several months, Microsoft negotiate console launch exclusivity:

Amid rumours that Xbox exclusivity has been secured for just a year, will Titanfall ever come to PlayStation? [...] "It's definitely not out of the question," Emslie replied. "We have a huge appreciation for the fans. Coming out and showing it to everybody, we're super nervous and wanted to make sure everybody loved it. We love all our fans, whatever console they support." [...] So, from the developer's point of view PlayStation isn't off the table. (Eurogamer)

Speculation continues until October the same year when Electronic Arts' Blake Jorgensen announces Titanfall is exclusive to Xbox for "the life of the title." Respawn co-founder Vince Zampella posts a sad emoji on Twitter saying he "only found out recently" that Microsoft had re-negotiated with EA to lock the game to Xbox in perpetuity:

The studio head was surprised as everyone else! How crazy is that? Then in a retrospective development diary Respawn had to blur out PlayStation development kits so not to offend Microsoft's marketing department.

It's mighty impressive how Microsoft and their social media evangelists have convinced a new generation of gamers that Xbox was not the king of exclusivity and in-game content during the Xbox 360 era, and that they didn't start the Xbox One era the same way, before initiating a more impactful strategy: Instead of negotiating for exclusivity solely, on a case-by-case basis, they began acquiring entire studios in order to exclude PlayStation gamers by default.

The CMA's independent assessment determined that Nintendo was less of a competitor to Microsoft (and Sony) than Sony was to Microsoft in the console space. It's a pretty detailed assessment with no hint of PlayStation interference, but it does reference Microsoft's internal comms frequently enough so that everyone can see that even they don't consider them to be as close a competitor as Sony is. This is brilliantly juxtaposed with the earlier section, where Microsoft's submissions to the CMA protest the opposite - that Nintendo is a massive and relevant competitor. We can infer this is because Microsoft has every interest in making the market look competitive and their market share look miniscule.

The FTA reached even more pronounced conclusions that there is a high end console market that excludes Nintendo entirely.

Somewhere, somehow, the narrative became that Sony was the one propagating the market segmentation and assessment of the competitive landscape, not the regulators, while actually, Microsoft believes in this segmentation internally and inadvertently supported this conclusion.

For the record I did mean to post this here as I'm sick of hearing lies about how regulators are being dictated to by Sony.

I'm going to open my statement by saying: damn WeGotThisCovered and damn GiantFreakinRobot.

(The former is unredeemable, and the latter gets some stuff right on occasion but reports a lot of nonsense.)

But a recent example of misinformation is this:

This is an honest mistake on his part, but that didn't stop several Twitter accounts and media outlets from parroting it.

Great thread.
Without coming up with any conspiracy, this bogus was intentionally gritted. There is no way that individuals like Colt, PeterOvo are normale people. This are 100% employed/contracted people which doing this propaganda. Remember when several of Japanese were tweeting the Xbox Series S|X consoles with the tag “Jump In”?
It was later discovered it as a fake campaign, same background have being used.
Microsoft and their shady tactics. Really glad their malicious intentions didn’t work out for them.

Sega of Japan killed SEGA.

And MS was around patting them on the back, trying to find the soft spot to knife, in the DreamCast era. And filled-in their grave and market position with literal "Xbox shit" since then.

I don't even really blame Sony tbh with you for SEGA's demise.

Claim: Sony signs deals with third-party developers preventing them from working with Microsoft.

Information circulating on Twitter with over a million combined views appears to show that "Sony has signed deals with third-party developers to stop them from working with Microsoft". The author of the text is GamesRadar Guide Writer Joel Franey and his piece was published April 17, 2023. Answering the question Is Final Fantasy 16 coming to PC, Xbox and Switch?, Franey writes:

Xbox: No, players shouldn't expect Final Fantasy 16 to be on any Xbox Series X/S or Xbox One, and the reason is a weird one: in the ongoing conflict between Sony and Microsoft, it has been revealed in released documentation from the CMA (3.67) that Sony has signed deals with third-party developers to stop them from working with Microsoft specifically.

The PDF document hyperlinked in support of the answer is Microsoft's Response to the CMA's 'Issues Statement' of October 14, 2022. Distinctly, the paragraph in question states:

Both Sony's and Nintendo's exclusive first-party games rank among the best-selling in Europe and worldwide. 239 Current Sony exclusive content includes prominent first-party titles such as The Last of Us, Ghosts of Tsushima, God of War, and Spiderman. In addition to having outright exclusive content, Sony has also entered into arrangements with third-party publishers which require the "exclusion" of Xbox from the set of platforms these publishers can distribute their games on. Some prominent examples of these agreements include Final Fantasy VII Remake (Square Enix), Bloodborne (From Software), the upcoming Final Fantasy XVI (Square Enix) and the recently announced Silent Hill 2 remastered (Bloober team). 240 Nintendo’s exclusive content includes well-established globally famous and iconic franchises such as Super Mario, Zelda, Xenoblade, Pokémon, and Animal Crossing.

So, the claim alters slightly from "Sony has signed deals with third-party developers to stop them from working with Microsoft" to Sony has "entered into arrangements with third-party publishers which require the 'exclusion' of Xbox from the set of platforms these publishers can distribute their games on."

Citation #240 directs the reader to a piece written by Engadget's Jessica Conditt published October 19, 2022 titled A 'Silent Hill 2' remake is coming from Bloober Team and it's a PS5 console exclusive. Conditt says "the [Silent Hill 2] remake will be exclusive to PS5 and PC for 12 months after release".

Of crucial importance, no evidence is furnished by Microsoft to support the claim Sony has "entered into arrangements with third-party publishers which require the 'exclusion' of Xbox from the set of platforms these publishers can distribute their games on", and the few examples provided disprove their own assertion.

Sony funded title Bloodborne—developed by FromSoftware with assistance by Japan Studio—did not prevent FromSoftware from working with and releasing other non Sony funded games on the Xbox platform. Similarly, while PS5 and PC are the only confirmed platforms for Final Fantasy XVI, there is no deal with Square Enix that prevents them from distributing other titles on the Xbox platform (see Chrono Cross, Star Ocean, and other recent Final Fantasy releases).

Conversely, Microsoft exclusive game Contraband by Avalanche Studios (of Just Cause fame) does not prevent Avalanche from working with Sony on other non exclusive games, and readers with a keen interest will recall that Bloober Team's prior game The Medium was a console launch Microsoft exclusive.

Truth: The claim is unsupported by the very Microsoft document GamesRadar uncritically duplicate in their answer. Microsoft appear to mischaracterize individual exclusive game deals—a practice they fully engage in—to mislead the CMA into delivering a decision favourable to their interests.

Side note: Even though Microsoft's assertion is six months old, it's interesting how the claim has gone viral on the eve of the CMA's decision whether to allow or decline Microsoft's merger of Activision-Blizzard. A skeptical mind might conclude the timing is conducive to "serves Sony right", "hypocrites" and other sympathetic pro Microsoft responses on social media immediately following the outcome.

Wow this is next level insane. They are literally misconstruing some wording about some third party exclusive deals to justify Microsoft buyin the largest publishers in gaming. Also totally disregarding the fact that Microsoft themselves also pay for tons of games to skip Playstation every year for over the last decade.

At one point, Microsoft also tried to use HBO's The Last of Us (which is based on an original property that Sony created by themselves) to justify buying a major company with a shit tonne of major pre-established titles:

They also claimed the Silent Hill 2 reboot was permanently blocked from the Xbox, which contradicts previous confirmations of it being a timed exclusive:

I honestly don't think Silent Hill 2 is a major get for Sony anyways. The original game is praised for depth, artistry, storytelling, and things that have nothing to do with technology and are essentially impossible to replicate. This strikes me as the sort of title that will be "controversial" when it first comes out, and then will be either mostly hated or forgotten years later.

If Sony has an exclusivity deal for Silent Hill f, The Short Message, or some of the future (non-remake) mainline titles, that's a bigger deal because those actually have the potential for positive buzz.

It's all word twisting and manipulation by them... the problem is that Sony are silent.

I don't see Sony with any media releases to counter Microsoft who is left to completely control the discourse at large.

If I was Sony, I'd be looking at getting better PR.
