How do you think game development can be sped up?

With games taking now we'll over three years to develop we are now finding ourselves well into console generations (some games are going to release midway in between the gen) before we get games that harness the systems capabilities. What do you think can be done to speed up development. Some things that are being used for good or for worse.

Al for development of different aspects of gaming.

Known engines, framework and tools (if created well allow devs to prototype faster and write less code)

Reusing assets from past games in sequels

What else can be done? Obviously the open world chase has made games so much more complex. Want to hear your thoughts because waiting for certain first party games is indeed frustrating and hearing about mid gen refreshes when we know devs haven't even been familiar with current consoles to me is superflous.

AAA games take way more 3 years to be made. Some examples:
  • Rise of the ronin: 9 years
  • Helldivers 2: 8-9 years
  • Spider-Man 2: 5 years
  • Horizon Forbidden West: 5 years
  • GoW Ragnarok: 4 years and a half
Things that help make games faster:
  • Making a sequel instead of a new IP
  • Reusing assets, mechanics, animations, etc. from previous games
  • Using the same engine than their previous game instead of a new/first time used by them/highly updated one
  • Having released more games on this generation instead of being their first one
  • Making way shorter games
  • Making linear instead of open world games
  • Hiring more outsourcing teams/people
  • Not chasing top tier visuals
  • AI will help to speed up some things, but needs a lot of R&D work before that
  • Next gen engines that will take full advantage of SSD/PS5 IO to do similar things to Nanite and Lumen (or some sort of real time global illumination), meaning that they no longer will have to optimize 3D models/make LODs/fake lighting, shadows or bumping etc. But they need years to make these engines and adapt their workflow and pipeline
  • If they are used to make GaaS titles, a ton of content, game modes etc. don't need to be developed before launch, allowing them to launch the game faster and not needing to develop some of that post launch stuff if they see it tanks at launch

Dropping this ridiculous chase for bigger and bigger worlds would help.

Stop casting well-known actors for games.

AI generated content doesn't have to be evil.

Reduce the platforms.
Al could have positive/negative benefits but I'm definitely interested to see it's use in speeding up development.

My favorite games taking half my lifetime to develop is sort of the reason I'm checked out currently.

On topic, you just have to look at how the biggest yearly games develop content to see that a lot of the efficiency is from asset reuse.

Generative algorithms will mostly just be used to fire workers instead of speed up development as their already exists libraries full of high quality models and textures on the internet that were made by humans.

Generative AI is the only answer, Hopefully AI speeds things up. I don't like waiting a decade for a new game

Seriously, it makes me not want to invest in consoles sometimes.

It will be AI and I hope it's Bard from Google.

Amazon needs to do something too. I know they have AI for Cloud but I'm not sure how helpful it is for game dev.

I think costs are the main issue studios are facing, games are becoming bigger and exponentially more detailed, so it's extremely labour intensive.

We've seen Remedy put out Alan Wake 2 with a budget said to be under 50 million, that is in Finland.

CDPR also seems to have lower costs, operating out of Poland.

If you have lower costs per developer / artist etc, then you can hire more and develop the game faster.... I think Sony should definitely be looking at strategic countries with lower costs to have studios that support the main ones. I know they have done this...but not enough really.

Make better decisions with the games released. You don’t need to spend an exorbitant amount of money to make a game lol. You need a fun Idea and a small team to make it.

AI can help create game assets and environments, the tech keeps getting better eventually it will be close to hand crafted environments.

AI can also be used for script writing when it comes to random NPCs
Plus AI Voices

This will save a ton of time, and it's the only realistic solution

Exactly which is why I mentioned it. It's advancing in many aspects of game development.
