It's still several more years until a new gen. I don't know what the real plan is obviously, but would not be surprised if this is just the current "story" to ease the blow. No one is going to want Xbox hardware if their games are on other consoles. There is literally zero reason to own one at that point. So in another 3 or 4 years they can just say "the market shows we are better off doing what we do best, making software." Blah blah blah.

We'll see.
