the support article was updated just 5 months ago 🤷🏼‍♂️

also Metacritic has really weird score translations for when IndieWire did score games, for example Metroid Dread got a B which somehow translates to a 75? Returnal’s A is a 100, Demon’s Souls Remake’s A- is a 91, and Persona 5 Striker’s got a B+ which is a 83

none of those scores make sense, I don’t know of any grading system where a B would be a 75/100… (especially one that clearly uses +/- qualifiers, also if B+ exists then how is an A (not A+) a 100?)
Yes and the Metacritic list non scored review that makes the support having outdated info.

About the site scores the Metacritic probably uses a 13 score choices.

100 A
91 A-
83 B+
75 B
67 B-
59 C+
50 C
42 C-
34 D+
26 D
18 D-
9 E+
1 E

Probably there are some round in the middle of them to +1 or -1 to match the E being 1.
It is weird but that is the math behind the scores.

Edit - Because the IndieWare submits the grade (A to E) and not the number (1 to 100)... Metacritic do the conversion with a similar table I posted.

BTW.

The highest 90 (the most close to 90.49) is:
343. Spelunky.

The lowest 90 (the most close to 89.51) is:
474. Marvel's Spider-man 2

That means Spider is very close to 89.
The all time 475. Dead Space is already at 89 (so the average is lower than 89.50).

I don't believe a single 83 dropped it from 91 to close to be 89.
There are more reviews added... yesterday it was 125 I believe today it has 129.

Maybe it's time to stop relaying this metacritic crap for futur games.

Opencritic is more coherent and much less dubious.

Yeah, definitely smells fishy. Bring it up on twitter, maybe. At least get it some visibility.

@ethomaz

I think that could be true. From what I remember, some sites influence the score more than others. A 9 from GameSpot is not the same as a 9 from some random site.

It is the only way to it have dropped that much with 3 adds being one 100 and the others two 83 and 80.
The weight in the GamesBeat or IndieWare is higher than others publications.
I don't believe it is IndieWare.
So maybe GamesBeat is in the same league as IGN, Edge, etc... or a tier lower but still higher than most publications.

This is a very old study (the site changed the URL so I'm using the waybackmachine).

Remember that was a Study made by Gamasutra which Metacitic debunked sayingt he weights are wrong but not denying there is weight.
This study was made comparing several games.

Sadly it was very old and a lot of publications nowdays are not there.

I'm guessing GamesBeat has a 1.25x weight while the NME has 0.25x or 0.50 weight.

That is old and not true today anymore.
When reviewers don't submit a score they put it as non scored.
That happened when Eurogamer removed scores... so Metacritic listed these without scores as non scored.

I don't remember when Metacritic changed that.... but they started to list non scored reviews as non scored.
If you roll down the score you will find the non scored ones.

So they don't provide a score if a reviewers doesn't submit one... they will list it as non scored.

How is this old?

Indiwire’s review:

“Sony’s Brilliant Video Game Sequel Understands Spidey Better Than the MCU Ever Has”

“so intelligently conceived and absurdly well-polished that it often seems revolutionary just by dint of how spectacular it feels to play, this blockbuster follow-up to 2018’s “Spider-Man” — and 2020’s Miles Morales-centered spinoff — soars above so much of its competition because of how relentlessly it confronts you with the fact that virtually no one could be Spider-Man. Or maybe it’s because the game pretty much allows you to fly around New York from the moment it starts. That’s pretty cool, too.”

“this massive steel playground is also home to one of the most purely enjoyable open-world games ever made”

“ Thanks to the fluidity of the controls, the addictiveness of the sidequests, and the ecstasy of the various combat and traversal mechanics that “Spider-Man 2” either refines or introduces into the franchise, anything you actually choose to do as Spider-Man comes at the temporary expense of 10 other things you might wish you were doing at the same time.”

“ The bliss of actually wanting to do everything available to you perfectly aligns with the moral compass of a superhero who accepts his privilege as an obligation.”

“ It’s a game about the agonies of striking the right work/life balance, and it’s such an addictive time-suck that Spider-Man’s problem soon becomes your own.”

“ While that balance continues to defy what’s possible in even a mega-budgeted AAA game like this one, Insomniac manages to achieve it in virtually every other regard. Combat is a treat from start to finish”

“ Everything blends together with a rare sense of purpose”

“ A quantum leap forward for its franchise”

First, make a claim pretending you know it all:
Actually the reviewer submit the score he wants to Metacritic.
That is how you submit a review.

Even if you don't have a score in your article you can give one when submitting to Metacritic.

Then, be thoroughly debunked:

Then you try and claim official information (where have I seen this before in the past few days) is outdated / incorrect:
That is old and not true today anymore.

Get thoroughly destroyed again by someone with a functional brain that actually comes up with what is likely the most reasonable answer:
the support article was updated just 5 months ago 🤷🏼‍♂️

also Metacritic has really weird score translations for when IndieWire did score games, for example Metroid Dread got a B which somehow translates to a 75? Returnal’s A is a 100, Demon’s Souls Remake’s A- is a 91, and Persona 5 Striker’s got a B+ which is a 83

none of those scores make sense, I don’t know of any grading system where a B would be a 75/100… (especially one that clearly uses +/- qualifiers, also if B+ exists then how is an A (not A+) a 100?)

edit: also if it’s submitted by the reviewer, why do ALL of IndieWire’s letter grades end up with the same score? every single B+ is listed as an 83, on that note Spider-Man: Miles Morales got a B+ and based on the 83 that they’ve listed Spider-Man 2 is it can be extrapolated that if IndieWire did score it it’d have gotten a B+ (at least Metacritic seems to believe so)

The option? To continue discrediting official, recently updated info, while confirming what the user before said and, by consequence, confirming that it's pretty much not the website, but Metacritic themselves, that decides the score (based on the criterion established before):
Yes and the Metacritic list non scored review that makes the support having outdated info.

About the site scores the Metacritic probably uses a 13 score choices.

100 A
91 A-
83 B+
75 B
67 B-
59 C+
50 C
42 C-
34 D+
26 D
18 D-
9 E+
1 E

Probably there are some round in the middle of them to +1 or -1 to match the E being 1.
It is weird but that is the math behind the scores.

Man.

Non scored reviews on Metacritic stay non scored... that is how it is from some years (maybe decade?) already... before that Metacritic indeed added scores to non scored reviews.
That FAQ line is old from when Metacritic used to give scores based in what they read for non scored reviews.
That is not how it works nowdays.

C'mon.

Edit - Well evidence to shut up you again.

Eurogamer when they choose not give scores anymore.

image-2023-10-18-175840287.png

Eurogamer when changed to give scores again.

image-2023-10-18-180554835.png

Understood now?
The FAQ is old.

That is what it is 🤷‍♂️

Metacritic doesn't add scores to reviews (that is a fact you can look yourself).
The FAQ says the opposite so the only explanation is that it is copy/paste from when they did that (yes they did in the past)... the FAQ is old is another fact that you can look yourself.
The scores I listed are how they convert the A to E scale with + and -... it is another well fact you can check yourself.

The site needs to submit a score (that is open... it is not a number but a text form... so it can be A to E, 1-10, 1-100, 1-5, etc... each site has it own grade system)... Metacritic convert to 1-100 scale.

The posts you quoted are in the same context and complement each other.
I wonder if logic is not your best friend.
