Idas says it's unlikely that we hear exactly what is said at the upcoming hearing. We will hear about the kinds of remedies Microsoft try to offer though.

In other news, the thread has descended into posters complaining about PlayStation having third party exclusives and arguing that their library being bigger than Xbox's means they have a monopoly. They're also upset that people seemed to be angrier about Tomb Raider being timed last gen than ff7r being timed.

One of the MS aligned apparatchiks will leak something and spin it to be as positive for microsoft as possible. The judge could hold MS in contempt of court, cancel the trial, and block the acquisition and the spin will be "Microsoft came out strong and presented their case well."

I do think MS and Activision will leak their version of events.

Reading that thread and seeing some pose as some type of pillars of morality, that can judge Sony as being 'shady' and 'monopolistic' is incredibly frustrating, especially when they paint MSFT as some type of beatified figure of the business community.

I have noticed that the thread has devolved into a grievance thread for microsoft fanboys. There isnt even a discussion about a glimmer of hope about the deal going through. I guess their new talking point is 3rd party exclusives are bad and sony needs to be punished for it, but microsft 3rd party exclusive's dont count because reasons?

We will hear all of the private discussions of that meeting...when Phil Spencer talks about it publicly

I think we can get an idea of how the hearing went based on the types of remedies offered. Light behavior remedies means they think it went well and it won't take much to convince EU regulators. Structural remedies offered mean desperation imo.

Their reason is because the poor multi-trillion dollar Microsoft shouldn’t be getting beaten up by that arrogant Sony like they are.

It’s totally diseased thinking, and totally ignores MS’ monopolistic motivations for ever getting into the console race to begin with.

I noticed a pattern since this acquisition process started
When you see Ms shills having meltdowns on fourms and twitter it means some bad news for this deal happend
So I think this deal will fail and it will be bad news for the Xbox division imo 🤔

Microsoft entered the console market to "kill sony" and the codename for the original xbox was "the Manhattan project." you know, like the Manhattan project where the atomic bomb was created and was later dropped on Japan? I cannot understand how sony (or any other japanese company for that mattter) hasnt brought this up publicly.

And it was granted approval by Bill Gates because Gates wanted every screen in every room of every house to be attached to a product running Windows.

The first hardware prototype for the original Xbox was called Midway, named for the island in the pacific that became the staging point for the US forces in the Pacific Theatre, and that was almost the released name for the system. The only reason they went with Xbox was because that codename had gotten leaked to the games press by developers and MS marketing realized it would be harder to get everyone to stop calling it that than it would be to just make it the official branding.

The real kicker for me is that many of the people who support this just want more games on Gamepass. That's it, that's their entire reason. It's so pervasive that the CMA had a line in their documentation to the effect that 'putting more games on Gamepass is not a reason to approve the deal'. The pettiest people puff the loudest about morality, though, particularly on Ree.

You can’t have a monopoly if you “grew” into the market. That’s now how it works. Just like apple doesn’t have a monopoly neither does google. Both “grew” into the market. If they merge, then, yes, that becomes a monopoly. If Sony buys every single publisher, then, yes, it becomes a monopoly.
Growing marketshare by making smart business choices is not a monopoly. Microsoft is able to make third party exclusive deals, they’re just bad at it.

They entered also because they panicked thinking Sony would dominate the living room. Honestly, MS are pathetic. They have no aim, no mission, no vision.

Doesn't matter for people on resetera. For them the CMA and the FTC are acting illegally

I must say that Google(android) and Apple do have a smartphone/App Store duopoly that is currently under fire from regulators all over the world.

To elaborate, what Sony’s dominance in video games is, is called a Monopsony. The market has multiple participants, but one particular brand just does things right in enough ways to be the biggest part of that market. It’s the same situation in mobile phones, where Apple is the single biggest brand, but there’s a ton of competition for second place.

A monopsony is about a company leveraging its dominance in the market to impose conditions on sellers because there aren't alternatives that you can sell to. It's the complement of monopoly where the company imposes conditions on buyers because there is no one else to buy from.

A company can be dominant in a market without being a monopsony, it depends on the behavior.

Perfectly explained.
