Microsoft is done for!
They will be stuck and not get content out
Sony can just announce this and that now when MS is in court for the next 2 years đź’€

This is literally gonna drag out for another 2 years? Good grief? Let it be over already.

Crazy thing is MS won't really be able to do any other big M/A till this is over. Pretty sure Sony appreciates that.

Nope they have done their job. Regulators will sue to block it now. Put MS in an awkward position. Sony can now go ahead and announce this and that. This all Sony wanted. China and FTC are against this deal. EU and CMA will join without a doubt. Microsoft will be stuck in court, so the way is clear for Sony.

MS will be lucky to get to do any acquisitions once this wraps up, if it goes the way prevailing political sentiment indicates.

They probably could, outside the FTC jurisdiction.
But it certainly wouldn't help their case later on.

Pretty much what I was thinking.
Another consideration is a lot of countries have some pretty tight laws about foreign investment, and MS doesn’t like not buying shit lock, stock and barrel, which is a big part of why they haven’t and won’t ever buy SEGA, Capcom or any other Japanese publishers. They wouldn’t legally be able to because they aren’t a Japanese company themselves.

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet! If this fails not only will they lose a corporation they build their entire gaming strategy on for generations to come but they lose $3billion in penalty, they get humiliated, their stock will take a hit.

Tencent recently hired Shawn layden to identify publishers and dev worth buying because they have become stagnant in China and have lost significant value over the past year. Also the Saudi development fund was to get more into gaming and they own a pice of capcom , Nintendo and they own snk. They have 39billion that want to spend on gaming by 2030 and they could increase that. This acquisition sht is just getting started and everyone is eyeing Japanese developers.

No it’s really not. There aren’t any specific laws prevent it. While there is a strict formal process and iconic culturally important or strategic corporations like Sony are protected. There is no specific legal mechanism that automatically prevents a foreign entities with enough bank to buy a Japanese corporation. The stairs bought snk and Tencent bought wake up and own stakes in several Japanese game developers.

The barrier to purchasing big devs or publishers is more cultural than legal on the japanese side of things. Also if they bought a publisher like capcom they couldn’t publish games like reindent evil in China and the ccp wouldn’t like them funding such content that’s overall violent. They probably couldn’t touch any dev that produces pro western content.

The fact that there are other big players with stakes in most Japanese publishers would also be a huge complication, as MS would be wanting to buy the whole entity, not a share of it, and the current situation cockblocks their ambitions nicely.

Yeah that’s why so many corps are spreading around so much money in the industry even when they don’t have enough for a straight acquisition. They just want to block anyone else from doing it. Sony invested directly in from and bought shares in Kodakawa just like Tencent. Together they have enough controlling interest in From to block anyone else from getting them.
