Yep, this is going to be terrible. Losing the studios core strength of RPG design to regress to Far Cry tier RPG-lite absolutely sucks.

I suspect quite a few people will be sad to see them go, but it's probably the right choice for a first-person RPG that's aiming to be as accessible as your standard modern Bethesda fare.
Is there anything Bethesda's negative influence can't taint?

Overall it looks like it could be pretty fun, but "janky" fun. You know the kind. The type of game you can feel is made on a tight budget, and at times may be too ambitious for what it's doing. The kind where there'll be plenty of wonky hit detection, graphical glitches, awkward NPC routines, jarring transitions, cheap-feeling font on certain menus, etc.

If you're not in the headspace to accept those types of limitations, the game will just be terrible for you. But if you're used to playing janky budget mid-tier games, Avowed's limitations may be tolerable and you can have fun with the game a good bit in spite of those. If I had to go by MC, and going by the "classic" grading system from K-12 of years past, it looks like it'll be a solid 77 - 80 type of game.

GamesRadar+ just spoke to Avowed director director Carrie Patel and gameplay director Gabe Paramo, as part of our huge Avowed preview looking ahead at the CRPG. Thankfully, both senior developers have stood firm in the belief that you don't need to have played games like Pillars of Eternity to enjoy Obsidian's forthcoming game.

"You really don't need to know anything about the previous Pillars games, and you certainly don't need to have played them to enjoy Avowed," says Patel. "For players who have, they're certainly some familiar concepts, bits of world-building, and even a few returning characters that they might recognize, but we wanted to make sure that players coming to it for the first time will have a good time."

Just wanted to say the same. 😁 Combat is just awesome. You are defend yourself in a position where enemy want to hits you. A a lot of environment interactivity too
Yeah the controls look super responsive and the movement to block and deflect is pretty fluid. But Avowed looks so stiff like 7th gen Skyrim animations
