Oh I agree with this. Games like Destruction AllStars, Redfall or Dreams shouldn't even exist.

Dreams rated 89 on metacritic, not 56 like Redfall or most GamePass trash, so not sure what's your point here lol. Unless you wanted to agree with me Sony games are great and Xbox games are trash.

Destruction allstars was a very very rare miss, but it was a minor game nobody cared about, not one of the main releases of the year like Redfall. GamePass games are so often pure 60 / 70 trash... Compare that to all the gems PS gamers already got like Returnal, Demon Souls remake, Ratchet, Ragnarok, Horizon FW... All games rates 85+...

Unlike Sony games, MS games mostly suck because MS doesn't manage their studios properly and they don't cancel games when they should. Hence their last place by a good distance since day one.

How sad that this is what Xbox fanboys resort to. 🤡

Redfall is so bad that it would be a better game if made in Dreams.

Dreams is a critically acclaimed, award winning, very well liked game that just didn't find a viable business model in time.It shares absolutely no similarities with trash like Redfall.

It's obvious he's never played it, just more trolling.

Where it’s at.
That's second-party my dude.

We all know what it means, no need for OP or anyone else to pretend it doesn't exist.
No, it’s a first-party published game developed by an external dev.

The console maker is the first party, any outside software company is the third party, and the second party, according to contract law, would be you.

Since the player doesn’t develop or publish the game, calling a game second party is just stupidity.

Nah second-party because the company is contracted by the platform-holder to develop for their console, but remains independent and not first-party, and not true third-party because they are bound by contract in development and publishing terms. Not stupid at all.

Also a key differentiating point with second-party games is that the developers invariably have different terms set out in their publishing agreement compared with first and third-party games.

Always thought 2nd party were 3rd party studios working under contract for a publisher.

Like Bungie with Activision or Rare with Nintendo.
2nd-party doesn't exists in legal terms...
It is a term created by some journos in 1980-1990 to point to studios working exclusivaly in first-party games for a platform holder.

Rare when was founded in 1985 focused primary in developer games to Nintendo NES... it was 3rd-party games so they were not called second-party.
Journalists started to call them second-party studio when they released Donkey Kong Country for SNES that was the first time they worked with a first-party IP.

Bungie for some time was a second-party with Microsoft but after become first-party... always devleoping Halo (first-party IP).
With Activision they were never second-party because they only have a deal between 3rd-parties... and they were working with their own IP (Destiny).
Now they are gain first-party under Sony.

To be called second-party you need to be a independent 3rd-party studio working in a 1st-party IP for a platform holder.

It’s a misuse of the term by definition.

It’s as idiotic as “I could care less” or “irregardless”.

Ah, yes. “Language isn’t static”, the call of the charge to lower intellectual standards so the retards won’t feel bad about themselves.

Sure, it's shorter. But it doesn't change the fact that it's a 1st party game. "2nd party" is a made up term.
HgCiWgI.png
So it’s a real term.

Not made up.
It’s a misuse of the term by definition.
2nd-party doesn't exists in legal terms...
Here you have a recent example of the 2nd party term being used in the industry, Jim Ryan called Stellar Blade a 2nd party game in a recent Famitsu interview:

As many other words or expressions, it's part of the terminology specific from a relatively new and innovative industry, in this case gaming where year after year keeps adding new techniques, actions or types of products that need new name. And as such may not appear in dictionaries or some legal paperworks, because they often aren't updated to show the current reality of relatively new gaming/tech/audiovisual markets and industries. And that's ok, to don't appear there doesn't mean it's a misuse of the language or that these terms don't exist, aren't used or are wrong. It just means they still aren't updated to show the current reality of the language.

If he is using the terms correctly that means Star Blade is Sony IP.
But I’m not sure if he wanted to mean that…

Anyway the game IP is registered and published by Sony.

He said 2nd party, which means it's a game published by a platform holder and developed by an studio not owned by this platform holder.

Just after talking about it (and burning shores) he mentions Rise of the Ronin (IP owned by Koei Tecmo) and Death Stranding 2 (IP owned by Sony). This is the full portion:

--I am looking forward to its release. What titles can we expect to see released or announced for the PlayStation platform in the Japanese market in the near future?

Ryan: There are some great titles in the pipeline, not only from PlayStation Studios, but from third-party publishers as well. Final Fantasy XVI," which I mentioned earlier, will be released exclusively for PS5, which will of course be a highlight, and we are also excited about "Stellar Blade," which is being developed by a second party and published by us. Then on April 19, we released "Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores" a paid downloadable content for "Horizon Forbidden West." Horizon has also become a highly acclaimed series loved by many fans.

In addition to these, "Rise of the Ronin" by Koei Tecmo Games and "Death Stranding 2" by Kojima Productions will also be key titles for PS5. Cooperation with our partners is essential to the great success of our games. Taking "Rise of the Ronin" as an example, Koei Tecmo Games is developing the game as a developer, and we at SIE will publish it by utilizing our very strong marketing power and distribution network. This combined effort is the secret to making the game a hit.

Was always under the impression that second party was mostly used for studios whose ownership was not fully owned by platform holders but close to majority share.

WTF?
even the name says it all, 1st party, it means, own developers.

Sackboy wasn't made by their own developers, but it was used Sony's Ip, so it was 2nd party.

3 party, is basically Street Fighter 5.
Sackboy: A Big Adventure is a Sony 1st party game. It doesn't matter who owns the studio. The game is a 1st party game. The IP is a 1st party IP.
Yes, you and her are wrong because as you admit they are commonly used in the industry since decades ago, not only by fans.

Yes, "2nd party" is a made up word. Just like "1st party" or "3rd party" and many other words we use in the industry because this industry started a few decades ago and changes a lot so there are many new words that appear like this one.

And yes, 2nd party are also 1st party games. 2nd party are the 1st party games developed by 3rd party studios. 3rd party studios are those not owned by the platform holder, and 1st party games are those published by the platform holder.

Even if there are a few exceptions like in rare cases of a platform holder publishing a certain 3rd party game only on certain country, or a 3rd party publishing a 1st party game only in a certain country, something more common in the past than now.
It's sometimes getting used to make it clear "1st party IP/game made by external 3rd party studios". But at the end of the day it's 1st party.
It's normally 1st or 3rd party. This has been made clear many times already by devs or journalists. Yes, you can use 2nd party game/IP. But in reality, it's 1st party.
