Sony in the early stages of developing a portable console that plays PS5 games

It’s about the ecosystem. People would want to play their digital PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4, and PS5 games on the go. Also with their trophies.
Steamdeck can already do that through emulation. Plus play all PS5 first party games.

Yeah, because Netflix putting Season 1-2 of Stranger Things on disc really derailed their subscriptions.

What does bluray and DVD have to do with Netflix? That’s not a competing service people have to subscribe to.

Very poor example WTF.

If Playstation would release a steamdeck quality device, it would be ridiculed.

The performance and graphical fidelity of steamdeck wouldn't be allowed by the Internet.

Playstation is held to a much higher standard.

Making a portable while putting your games on direct competitors platforms, Switch and Steamdeck.

Good luck with that.
Switch which also mean Switch 2, Steamdeck which also means Steamdeck 2 & PC which means Xbox handheld aswell & other shit like ROG.

A lot of people dismiss devices like Steamdeck whether they call it a pc or hybrid it doesn’t matter it acts like a console & in the future will leave more questions, damages & overall troubles for the PS business if PS wants to make new hardware.

Valve is only starting to. Valve sits in a unique position where there not pc or hardware but they benefit from pc & now with Steamdeck & future hardware Valve/Steam will be a big player that threatens Sony/PS as Valve becomes the defacto hardware/storefront in not just gaming/pc but vr handhelds etc which will likely evolve to entertainment.

https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingLeaksAndRumours/s/TUYW4LOQTO

Can’t believe Sony killed there own VR just for Valve/Steam likely fully push PS out of that market with PS own software through mods unless PS takes action which they have shown to not being as ruthless as Nintendo. Also rumors of Valve/Steam getting back to develop software w deadlock & CSGO just being the start. Maybe Valve/Steam fulfills there dream of a Steam box through Steamdeck & achieving the same result, killing Xbox & windows in PC & killing or at the very least pushing PS into a corner w only Nintendo, Apple & maybe Netflix being future storefront/hardware leaders.

You are going to see a lot of scrutinizing with a PS handheld. It’s already done so with the Portal. Things nobody cares to complain about about for Switch and Steamdeck.

All the more reason Sony putting games there is a bad idea. There should be only one choice on where to play PS games. Where even a person with zero interest would have to buy it. That’s always been the point in this kind of market.

That’s what I don’t get with Sony. Valve and Nintendo are not some small time businesses. They compete directly for your customers. Why are you helping them.

This is how Sony gets to 130m+ Lifetime PS5 sales.

My portal kinda fills this niche for me perfectly already. Glad to see Sony trying this market again, as PsP is one of my personal favorite platforms. As long as the portable doesn't get any exclusives, and simply plays ps5 and cross gen ps6 games it's golden.

issue is for a customer like me is, i'll have a PS6 day one and won't want to touch anything from PS5 ever again.

Don't be dense.

Your argument is that putting games on other platforms people won't buy PlayStation. You could make the same argument here for Netflix that if they put their biggest titles on physical media that people can buy it there and decide not to subscribe. It doesn't need to be another subscription service.

Steam and Switch are not traditional consoles just like physical media isn't a subscription service.

Exclusivity only works in certain situations in media and more and more companies are recognizing that. People like you will stay in complete denial despite data showing otherwise.

Ask yourself what you being wrong looks like and if you don't have an answer, know that you're not a serious person.

Netflix use to offer DVD's for their SUBSCRIBERS as the company started out as a rental service as well. Your analogy is flawed and stupid as they aren't giving away their catalog to anyone outside of their paying ecosystem lol.

PlayStation went and gave away their walled garden to Steam, there's a difference. And the worst part is their games aren't even selling in that platform.

Just add cloud functionality to Portal and call it a day, sell a premium version that plays PS4 and PS5 games natively for a few dollars more.

It’s not remotely the same thing since physical media is not a streaming service. They’re 2 separate markets. Netflix putting their shows on bluray doesn’t mean people will go subscribe to Amazon and AppleTV. They can choose not to subscribe for many reasons that has nothing to do with going to competing service.

I have over 500 blurays yet I still have multiple streaming services for convenience. Stranger Things being on bluray didn’t make me want cancel my Netflix account. I canceled my account either because of price or other services were cheaper and had better selection of content and picture quality. Netflix is competing with other companies that operate just like them. Not the physical media market.

Nintendo and PC plays games just as PlayStation does. They are all in the same videogame market. Consumers choose what’s best for them based on price and games they like. I don’t care how much people want to separate Switch into some kiddy/family category and PC for builders/enthusiasts. People make a choice to choose from PS, Nintendo, Xbox, PC.

Sony putting their games on any one of these devices devalues their own console and gives people more reasons not to buy one.

That is a 100% fact and how any industry where products are competing with each other works. Sony and 3rd parties getting greedy and only wanting quick short term money does not change that fact. They can come up with all the bullshit reasons excuses on why multiplatform is good all they want.

Yes, a PC handheld that would support remote play and cloud gaming, hopefully featuring crossbuy in the titles available on both their PS, PC and mobile PSN stores.

It would be the logical step after the PS Portal, and a great complement to their business in both console, PC and mobile.

The key thing here will be to don't repeat the main issue of PS Vita: to require dedicated games and ports because a smaller install base won't make them profitable specially considering every generation budgets get more expensive.

To play natively PS5 games wouldn't be possible because it would need to have exactly the same hardware, which doesn't fit in a portable. Since almost all their PS5 and PS4 games (plus pretty likely somewhere in the future the PS1/PS2/PSP classics too) will end being available on PC and they'll have their own PC store, it would make sense to make it a PC handheld (specially if in addition to feature the Sony PS OS it also allows to install other operative systems like SteamOS or even Lakka/Batocera/Retropie/etc).

It won't be a PC handheld; you need to drop this. It's ridiculous. Why would SIE make a handheld that doesn't run the same OS as their own home console? And for what exactly, a hypothetical launcher on PC (likely Windows)?

You're jumping through a lot of loops to avoid the obvious. As to your claims a portable with PS5-level specs can't be done by the time they ready a PS6?...

That's a single guy making a DIY portable PS5. Yes, not "portable" like a Switch or Steam Deck, but it's still a portable. Now imagine the company that actually created the system itself and has a history of manufacturing electronics, condensing that even further into a smaller unit by 2028. And you're doubting they'd be able to do it? You sound like the Xbox fanboys who were calling the PS5 a fire hazard back before it launched.

Also your idea suggesting they'd allow Other OS on a PS portable doesn't make any sense, same as suggesting they'd go out of their way to make the portable run an PC OS like Windows instead of the FreeBSD-based OS of their PlayStation consoles. All of this to push a PC launcher, would be incredibly foolish. They can't guarantee 3P will support the launcher like they do the console, and they can't guarantee PC gamers or even customers of a PS PC portable would focus their purchases to that launcher. Since with your suggestion, they'd just as easily be able to access Steam and keep the vast majority of their active time and spending there, meaning SIE could only count on upfront profits from the portable itself, increasing MSRP and lowering the amount of units they'd manufacture for sale.

A PC handheld would work for Microsoft since they also own the OS that vast majority of PC gaming is done on, Windows, in addition to Microsoft Store, the main standard for game development on PC that all engines support (DX12U), and PC Game Pass. Meanwhile, Xbox OS is basically a modified Windows. Sony & SIE don't have any of those vested interests, and at best their launcher would be maybe 3 years old by the time a PC portable from SIE was ready to launch. Which isn't enough time to establish market share to guarantee some built-in early adoption of a PC portable.

Even if it were, the synergy between the portable and console would be lost since the portable'd be running not just Windows, but other OSes like Steam OS, whereas the PS6 would be running the PS OS. Why would you want SIE to actively damage synergy between their gaming products and create complications that'd mirror what the PS4 & PS Vita had to go through?

A PS portable only works if it's running the same OS as the console itself, and targets compatibility with the console's library, not some PC launcher's. It doesn't need an Other OS option which would just open up questions as to why the PS6 itself doesn't have Other OS too. It doesn't need to avoid creating complications through avoiding need for its own software library, only to create other complications through running a different kernel and OS than the home console (especially kernels & OSes that SIE don't even own).

Besides, you're ignoring that tech like PSSR and other hardware accelerated features would be shared between the PS portable and future systems like PS6, and it won't be difficult to find ways to cost-reduce for a portable at PS5 spec (i.e using GDDR6W instead of GDDR6 to save on chip count & power consumption, switch to small m.2 internal SSD instead of the internal SSD setup PS5s use, combine ASICs within the I/O subsystem for cost reduction, use more energy-efficient Zen & RDNA/UDNA architectures running Zen 2 & RDNA2 in BC, etc.). If anything, targeting base PS5 spec for a new handheld would be preferential towards running adequately scaled-down versions of PS6 games on it, if SIE can develop technologies (alongside with AMD) to automate performance optimizations across different target profiles.

Your idea of a PC-based PS handheld is at best a couple generations too early. The things you suggest for it make no sense unless they also push that for the PS6, but there is no genuine reason for SIE to prioritize things like Other OS, or access to alternative storefronts, with their gaming systems. The reason Microsoft will very likely have alternative storefronts with next Xbox systems is because they need it in order for Xbox to survive as gaming hardware commercially. They can bring support for Windows programs on it because they own Windows and Xbox OS is already just an OS on a modified Windows kernel. OTOH, PlayStation's doing just fine prioritizing its own OS, and prioritizing the console. They don't even really need a PC launcher IMHO but if they feel that's worth doing, at least it'd make their PC strategy more synergized (but only if they don't get any further in deep with supporting Steam than they already are).

Also @mibu no ookami ...wake me up when Disney starts putting their MCU shows & films wholesale on Netflix and HBO MAX. Don't act like content differentiation (exclusivity) doesn't matter.

...better yet, wake me up when Microsoft decides to let Sony, Apple, Google or Tencent share IP ownership rights to the Windows kernel & OS. Hell will freeze over before that happens and you know it. So tell me why exclusivity is bad/nonimportant to customers, yet corporations swear by it?

Yeah agree. I’d argue Nintendo & Valve/Steam is a bigger & more serious threat then Xbox that can actually push PS hardware & storefront out of the market similar to how Bill gates though PS was a threat to PC. Valve especially is a quite killer they don’t talk much & there expansion & plans are always behind closed doors door w people having to gather any thoughts of Valve through rumors.

I can even see Apple making a handheld using there App Store where there phones isn’t powerful enough to play console/pc games a Apple handheld would be the next step for Apple to get AAA console & PC games onto the App Store where they can now get 30% cuts. Netflix is also another one I would look out after

You seriously over state how much of a threat Valve is to PS. PS is several times larger and the two platforms have nurtured two very different sides of the industry. You have 5+ million people showing up for GOW in less than a week on console and only a few hundred thousand on PC. A lot of your analysis comes with the pre conception that most of the market is in a hot seat to switch platforms, when in reality most of us are already entrenched in our ecosystems as is, most people are going to stay where they are.

You would have better chances to find a donkey able to solve calculus problems than having him admitting to be wrong.

Disney went out of the way to buy back Netflix produced Marvel shows in order to include them in their service (and expand upon them). Amazon spent 250.000.000$ to buy the LotR rights to produce exclusive content on their service.

But exclusives don't matter.....

You have 5+ million people showing up for GOW in less than a week on console and only a few hundred thousand on PC.

Why give the 5+ million people on PS a lesser product in order to make some bucks from the few 100k on PC?

What makes people think Sony won’t or can’t reverse their PC port endeavour?

Currently most games aren’t Day 1 so that’s an advantage already for the new portable.

Do people honestly believe Sony will release their games simultaneously on their portable and Steamdeck?

The only expansion on PC & Mobile that makes sense is multiplayer GAAS games & even with a few caveats games like GT7, LBP, PS Home & or other smaller scale fun/party centric game should be exclusive to PS.

And even w PC the expansion should be under a PS PC launcher. Horizon monster hunter should only release on PS4, PS5 & PS PC launcher same for Fairgames a lot of PS multiplayer games should really be released across the PS4 & PS5 family to widen the total playerbase while focusing on the PS ecosystem/storefront. Fairgames should release on PS4 same for Helldivers 2 & Marathon (pull Xbox completely) not sure why PS skips there own platform while in the other hand diminish itself by releasing competitors platform. It would also drive PS+ at the very least whether PS4 stay on PS4 PS would be getting them to continue paying PS+ monthly.

And yes don’t confuse how a market & business is supposed to properly work for short sighted or even poor/lacking vision & leadership.

Not even Valve releases there new multiplayer on PS console & they certainly won’t for the PS PC launcher. Even Half Lyfe does even gets a port to PSVR2 & that game is just sitting there racking no sells but Valve knows even if it’s selling the notion that it is still exclusive drive consumers to migrate & stay w Valve/Steam for the long term & who knows if PS kill themselves in console & VR Valve/Steam might just make a VR headset & allow the entire Steam library play VR through mods & since PS games are there & PS is dead ultimately long term Valve/Steam walk of w exclusive content without having to do anything

I'm excited to see what Cerny could design for a new portable, especially since the Vita was great from a technical perspective. What’s out there today wouldn’t be enough; Playstation is held to a much higher standard than other handheld manufacturers.

Although, I'll likely stick to the portal.

Because they want money. Listening to the extreme side of their fanbase that cannot handle their toy being more available down the line is not going to make them more money. Look at Helldivers. If it was PS only, instead of selling 15 million, it would be closer to something like 7 million. they will always follow the money.

We're lucky enough that they still see value in gatekeeping their single player games for at least a year. I don't see Sony's games dropping in quality so I see no issue here as my content intake is untouched.
