This straight after job listings at playstation for devs to code games for different system architectures. It has to be a new handheld that will support new games and ps4 back cat titles.

That's just a good thing in general though.

The architecture is different for Ps5 and Ps5 pro even.

I guess portal was playstation dipping it's toe in to the handheld market to see if a full blown console would be worth the investment.

Amazing if true.

Let it run ps4 games, and maybe ps5 games in lower res and fps.

It doesnt need some specific exclusives. Just let it run ps4 library.

Tried portal recently. Amazing thing. Thinking about buying it.

Its time to give nintendo some competition in japan.

After the release of SteamDeck 2, it will be very difficult for them.

Even now, SteamDeck 1 and various PC hardware are actively advertised and promoted with releases from Sony, and Sony is only talking about handhelds for projects with !!!PS4!!!?

Don't forget about the piracy factor, on SD and its analogs, all Sony games except HD2 (and partially DS, which has online integrations) are free.

Weird how people are excited for this but seen to forget the failures that were the PsP and Ps Vita do we really want another waste of money being put out there?

I really hope it doesn't run PS5 games, or at least it's not a requirement to make games run on it. Yet another platform to support surely won't help with the already lacking quantity and lower than usual quality of their first party studios. Series S docet.

The apparent success of PlayStation Portal was a surprise to me, maybe it was a surprise to Sony as well and now they gained the confidence to try something more ambitious.

No chance that they would make it a requirement like the Series S, that would be way too stupid.

I hope it's something like this:
- All base PS4 games just work as if it was a PS4.
- Option for dedicated patches for PS4 games.
- Option for native releases.

Something like this would cover all basis.

Without exclusive games for the system like the PSP and Vita had, this really is useless for me. But seeing how the Portal did, this will do really well, I feel.

i don't get all this obsession with everything suppose to support everything.

as a customer, in the on that stick, i am getting worst outcome imagine. all games will suffer because of this shit, from quality to design and size and increased in development time.

You spitting. It’s almost as if folks forgot how much a handheld would split resources. Both Sony and Nintendo gained a lot leaving their secondary markets.

PSP sold 80 million. Hardly a failure, despite never breaking Nintendo's grip on handhelds. The portal, which doesn't even play games natively, is a success, so focusing on creating console content and having a handheld form factor out there for a different market is anything but a waste.

No split resources here because it already supports existing titles and will compete with Switch 2. (Steam Deck is not competition, it's the little leagues.) Developing for it exclusively would be a waste.

Idk if I want this tbh. Old games are boring
Hogwarts Legacy, Modern Warfare III, Madden NFL 24, Diablo IV, Street Fighter 6, Resident Evil 4, the most popular games of last year released on PS4.

Shadow of the Erdtree , Persona 3 Reload, Metaphor: ReFantazio, Destiny 2: The Final Shape, plenty of games still releasing on PS4 as well.

Maybe whoever created that "rumor" saw my post suggesting that the PS Player successor for the next gen (PS5) could be instead a PC handheld that would use Sony's PC store and would run natively all the games available there, which at that point will include most of their relevant PS5 and PS4 games, plus pretty likely PS1/PS2/PSP classics too. In addition to support PS cloud gaming and Remote Play.

That would solve the main issue PSP and Vita had: to need to dedicate teams to make specific ports and games for them. This PC handheld would be basically as Steamdeck, PS4 and PS5 are: a PC with a customized Linux based OS (but this case it would run the PC PSN store instead of the PS PSN store, featuring also cross-gen/cross-save/shared trophies/shared frriends/maybe crossbuy with PS home consoles).

This would engage their PC PSN store, would give the portable a big catalog since day one and would be the same big games just running in lower settings, not reduced versions.

I don't find the source trustworthy at all ( I can understand a Russian guy getting PC info early but how would he know this?) And, even if it does happen, it will be hobbled by being all digital, all old stuff (or JP exclusives since their smaller releases always seemingly hold back to older stuff like PS4 anyway.)
