Account with almost 800k followers btw. Once this sentiment reaches the mainstream Playstation hardware will be in trouble. Especially as we know all future sony GAAS games will also be day 1 on PC.
I find the doom and gloom for PlayStation PC ports fascinating.
Horizon Zero Dawn PC released in what...2020? The start of the doom and gloom then add a number of PC releases later right up to 2023 and PlayStation hardware is having some of its highest selling months in its history. Demand is through the roof. And without the pandemic install base would have been even higher than today.
So 2-3 years after initial release seem like a solid amount of time to not affect the hardware business. There is a balancing act that Herman and Jim have discussed many times and the time delay can be adjusted at any moment if required.
PlayStation wants to maximise the income and reach of it single player gamers.
The solution is a time based business model.
Think of it like the path of a theatrical film release. You maximize sales at the box office, 3-6 months later rent/buy at home, 6-9 months later add to streaming service(s) and boost subscriber numbers and reach.
The business model has worked for decades, have the mainstream stopped going cinema because films can be watched sometime later at home? No.
PlayStation are doing the same, PS5 being the theatrical release in this case then 2-3 years later after maximizing sales and PS+ subscriber opportunities then its time to go for reach.
Release on PC, release on Mac, release on any device that can handle it this way more people are exposed to the game and generating fresh new income.
And maybe they'll buy a PS5 to play the sequel day one. If not Sony are okay if you choose to wait, its still extra revenue they were not getting before.
You could say full PlayStation exclusives are over. Which sounds scary for some fans. And fanboys feed off of. But the timed approach to game releases is a win win for Sony.
Gaas games on the other hand is maximum exposure day one for the biggest audience and income just a different business model.
Im happy more people get to play Ratchet and Clank its a great game that deserves more fans of Insomniac games.
