Cope. Sony is down sizing.
Contrary to popular opinion, reducing staffing levels is good. Teams are often more inefficient per worker at larger scales, the organisation suffers from management bloat, and as the old Pareto principle stipulates - full of people who are not necessary. And it absolutely can be part of acquisitions because reducing overhead and simplifying teams allows growth in other areas. Though I agree with others that these layoffs are nothing major I think all the doom and gloom over this comes from people with a general lack of understanding.

Doom sales are sht, Bethesda tried to revive quake and it flopped hard, ES is hot garbage the only one that sold incredibly well by mondern mega hit standards was Skyrim which released on 9 platforms over the course of 10yrs and is still out sold by Witcher 3 which just its initial pc, ps4, xbone and switch sales. Fallout out is equally trash and the and the creation engine is a huge hinderance to both Elder scroll and fallout and whatever else garbage they make with it. Following the purchase of Bethesda there was no significant growth in gamepass it stagnated their was no mass exodus from ps no increase in Xbox console sold. 99% of the casual gaming community didn’t even realize Microsoft bought zenimax. Zenimax games are sht. HFW in one year out sold deathloop, hifirush, redfall and ghost wire combined! Wtf does ps have to be worried about from Bethesda? Ugly broken games no body even wants to play on gamepass for “free”?

Ok dude. Im an Xbox hater as much as most people but its ok to admit they have some big IPs. Its not about being worried now, its about being worried for the future. MS can be shit all they want but they are gonna take some great IPs down with them.

Sony just had layoffs at almost all of their first party studios and yall think theyre going to make acquisitions?
As far as we know by official sources or things we can fact check, the only studio who pretty likely had layoffs was Bungie because they mentioned to have a sad week and some people left.

Who in most cases could be simply redundant, unneeded low level people now that they are part of SIE and maybe related to some delay for further polish. And are rumored to be 8%, a very small percentage of people. In recent years they have been highly growing, so they will barely notice it.

What big ip? SF was supposed to be their biggest ip of the generation. It remained in the top ten on the u.k, u.s sales charts for under 2 weeks. It was out of the top 15 within 3 weeks, it was in the 30s within 4. That’s what u call a big ip? It took over a year and 3 platforms for deathloop to reach 5 million players including gamepass and psplus, ghost wire at 6 million, hifi rush Xbox/pc took 3 months to reach 3 million players. Doom eternal sales were so sht zenimax never even released hard official numbers. The entire reason xenimax was sold in the first place was because their software wasn’t selling. Wtf does ps have to be worried about. 10yrs of development and the resources of a 2trillion dollar corporation and starfield is the best Bethesda could come up with?

If you dont think Fallout, Doom, Elder Scrolls are decently popular IPs then ok.
I dont care about Starfield and Hifi Rush, Im not even talking about them.

Bloodborne sales were shite, doesnt mean its a bad game or not popular.

Im not saying MS will do well with them. Whatever they touch normally turns to crap, but they bought some big IPs in the last decade

Doom is not a big franchise. The only Elder scrolls game that sold incredibly well was Skyrim which is on 9 platforms with 4 rereleases over a decade the next closes ES game was oblivion which did about 10 mil units sold over 17yrs. The entire fallout franchise has sold 46 million units since 1996. That’s almost 3 decades of fallout sales and the best they can do is is 46. HZD + HFW did 30 million + in 7 yrs. Gow+ GWR did 32 million in 6yrs. In terms of sales the FO franchise isn’t impressive at all. Bethesda what have we’ll known franchises but they are very impressive in sales at all compared to modem game sales

The numbers you gave are great numbers. You sound like a fool for saying they are anything but. Lol "Doom is not a big franchise." Whatever you say, scrub.

Halo, Gears, Forza, Forza Horizon, Killer Instinct, Banjo, Minecraft, Doom, Quake, Prey, Fallout, Elder Scrools, Dishonored, CoD, Tony Hawk, Spyro, Crash, Warcraft, Starcraft, Overwatch.. they have a shit ton of popular IPs.

Many of them are dead, dormant or in the lowest shape they ever have been, but in capable hands they could be huge again or at least great again.

What’s capable hands got to do with anything ppl just don’t care about a lot of that garbage. Ppl want new ip. Sony has tons of ip so do most publishers but the thing about it is those ip are dated and fcking old. Crash for sold like sht, forza and halo had to go free to play because no one were buying the games even when they had good reviews, dishonored was never a major franchise and didn’t sell well, prey was a sales failure, no cares about killer instinct the fight game genre is very hard to break into and the establish franchises continue to dominate every genera, overwatch is crashing and burning, gears 4 flopped, gears 5 flopped the multiplayer died within 6 months of launch. Xbox issue has always been not enough new fresh ip, and playing it safe with the same old garbage. Xbox has reboots, remasters and sequels planned but very little in the way of anything new and fresh to excite triple A hardcore gamers. Just look at what they have announced for next yr tower born? An Indy side scroller, era history untold a rats game, Hellblade 2 a sequel to a game that sold like sht or Xbox has been in develop for 7 yrs and most ppl have never heard of, flight sim expansion sequel or whatever. Xbox can’t even manage the ip they have and have to rely heavily on external studios. And even with all they have bought Xbox is lacking in studios because cod eats up a lot of resources. It takes 9 to 11 studios and as much as $300 million to put out each cod annual. Even if they switch to a bi-annual release schedule they still dont have enough teams.
PlayStation on the other hand is releasing stellar blade new ip, rise of ronin new ip, lost soul aside new ip concord new ip, convallaria new ip, helldivers 2 it’s a sequel but with complete revamped in terms of style, wolverine a known ip but with a completely different take from insomniac. the rest of the gen new ip from London studio, haven, Firesprite , ballistic moon, swizzle kiss, housemarque, bend, Santa Monica, bungie, naughty dog, blue point*, sumo digital, Valkyrie, savage. PS has new ip coming out the ass

Not having capable hands is the reason of why MS had some of the biggest IPs in gaming and weren't able to keep them as successful as they were in the past.

Ppl want new ip.
In most cases the biggest seller games are sequels. And for a big company, a sequel of a popular IP is way safer and easier to do than a new IP.

I'd say all this are guesses, I don't remember if they ever published sales numbers for these games.

Xbox issue has always been not enough new fresh ip, and playing it safe with the same old garbage.
Yes, and since they didn't have capable hands to create top new IPs they bought a ton of popular IPs.

An Indy side scroller, era history untold a rats game, Hellblade 2 a sequel to a game that sold like sht or Xbox has been in develop for 7 yrs and most ppl have never heard of, flight sim expansion sequel or whatever. I'm not a fan of the MS lineup, and I think that in capable hands they'd take less time to release their stuff, would release better games, and would do it aligning their calendar to have several big exclusives per year.

Yes, Sony and Ubisoft are the publishers who bet more on new IP by far. In the case of Sony they said that around half of the games they have under development are new IP. Which is a very bold and risky approach. Hermen and Jimbo have big balls.

what can they even buy with that? 🤣😂
They bought Audeze (very small company of headets) and iSize (very small company of IA video enhacement in real time). Who knows, they may something left to get another small company or two.

But obviously not a big game publisher or gamedev studio.
