According to the article valve sold 1.62 million units in 2022, and should experience a healthy 14% growth to 1.85 million in 2023, if it keeps growing it might outsell the game gear and vita, which are the 2 best selling portable not by Nintendo or the psp
Sounds like the steam deck is carving itself out a nice little niche, hopefully valve makes a steamdeck 2 it in another 3 or 4 years

Obviously something like the switch or ps5 can sell that many units in a good month but the steamdeck is a very different product as it is very much an enthusiast product , Gabe Newell hand delivered units, what is more enthusiast than that. Plus no money on ad campaigns, probably sold at a profit, and steam use still lets them profit off of usage

Anyway all the nutters that thought it would destroy the switch have been proven to be nutters, and all the sensible people that thought it would be a hit niche product and a win for valve have been proven correct

Nobody thought the Steam Deck would destroy the Switch... that's just ridiculous. The thing isn't even sold at retail.. which makes these numbers quite impressive, especially if they can continue to keep this trajectory. The market is far more than just Steam Deck though.. and now we're seeing ASUS and others getting into it, so it's very clear there's a market there.

If it keeps going like this for another 10 years it will beat the Vita numbers.

Valve sees the Deck as a big success, Sony sees the Vita as massive failure.

Fuck Sony and their Q-lite streaming device, shameful that they can't compete with Valve and offer a proper portable solution for PlayStation gamers.

Vita was a failure relative to it's market though.

The Deck IS a big success relative to it's market. It's literally helping create/define the market.

The streaming device makes sense.. because at first they will focus on Remote Play.. and then they will focus on PSNow. They're not going to build a dedicated handheld which can't compete with the Switch and play both the handheld games and PS5 games..

Nintendo basically erased the traditional handheld market and fused it into the hybrid console market. Which is essentially what the Steam Deck does for PCs. Having ANOTHER device with different architecture, dev tools and no backwards compatibility is just needless headache and wouldn't work out well for Sony.

Really bad sales for a portable game device.
And at that rate it will never sell more than Vita that was a big failure.

That tells us that the gaming market in PC is way smaller than most people believes or claim in these forums.

Complete nonsense.

But it's great you admit the Vita was a big failure. Steam Deck on the other hand will continue to sell, and will get a future iteration. :giggle: :giggle:

The Vita was a failure because Sony had the wrong expectations. 80m was not going to happen. 30m could've happened if they had made the right calls.

PS4 Portable would solve all issues you bring up about the Vita, that's why I advocate for it. I just want a way to natively play my PS games on the go. Fuck them if they can't see that there is a market for it.

About the news... I did not check and these 1.6m for 2022 are a very optimist estimate.
Valve probably didn't shipped that in 2022.

Even InstallBase are doubting these 1.6m in 2022.

That makes thinks even worst to Steam Deck.

No it isn't a failure... it's literally a handheld PC.

The Vita was a completely separate market from the console, and had to create it's own market to sell games to. The Vita's success depended on the market buying them, AND developers supporting them.. which it failed to do, and thus Sony just gave up on it.

The Deck however, doesn't depend on developers supporting it... it taps into an existing market, and thus it doesn't need to build a market to justify development of titles for it.. they already happen regardless.

So no... the Deck isn't failing. They can produce exactly as much as they can sell.. and they aren't forced to sell more of them to sustain their market.. because that market IS the PC market.

Vita though... that was supposed to mean life right?

Huge failure... 1.6 million in a year is basically a dead horse.

You love to say Vita in your posts for whatever reason and it did way better than that in most years.

Hope you keep that same energy with the PSVR2 :ROFLMAO:

There's a reason Sony abandoned it and why they're making a streaming device and not a new handheld.. because it was a failure

It’s not its own handheld platform like Vita or Switch tho. It’s a portable steam pc….

These numbers are fine.

The sooner the Q-Lite releases the better. It's really not going to be a specs battle no matter how much the fanboys may try to focus on the spec sheet before launch. It's a market penetration battle. The Steam Deck gets wings because the market is devoid of an alternative to Switch/DS, which used to be the PSP/VITA role. Sony pulled the trigger on the PSP/Vita cause it assumed mobile gaming (via Cellphones) would inevitably make handheld gaming obsolete. This was around the time MS, with the Xbox 360 was putting a squeeze on Sony's console operation - hence the need to consolidate and focus. Nintendo has shown the market can stand on its own niche despite saturation of mobile gaming via cellphones. This eventually attracts eyes wanting a piece of the pie for the "non-Switch" audience.

Strategy for the time being should be simple. Drown the Steam Deck out of market potential by crowding the market before it becomes the established alternative for the non-Switch camp. You have to offer something to the 150m-170m console audience on PlayStation and Xbox. Ahoy Mateys Port Begging Master Race won't be enough to make the Steam Deck a thing - they need the PS/Xbox console audience badly. Barring an alternative the Steam Deck has the potential to be the go-to non-Switch if left unchecked (furthering long term consumer flight from console to PC via library attachment).

Those numbers however are peanuts and once in a crowded market, exclusive software makes or breaks. More, brand power plays a role. Pricing for Q-Lite will be key, more so than specs. Obviously it will also need some thought put into it. Keeping Valve where it belongs should be of upmost importance to both Sony and Nintendo. Deal with weeds early - always. It's a never ending chore.

Aren’t decks online order only? Are they sold at a loss or at cost?

Within the scope of just creating a portable that piggybacks your steam library….

I don’t see the doom. This is fine.
