Sony have to have a PS5pro in development or at least have an idea of how they would produce one, if needed.

Why? Because last gen MIcrosoft released the 1x, which is genuinely a good console, but it wasn't a 'pro' model of the Xbone, it was a new generation. All it had in common was the CPU where as everything else had a serious boost or changed completely (RAM).

If Microsoft do the same this gen and Sony don't release a Pro, by 2024 - when PS5 would have sold lots and lots of units, a new, super high-end Xbox has the potential to sell a lot of units to the hardcore crowd. The 1X had a significant increase in specs vs Xbox 1, if the same were to happen and a Series X 'X' were to have a significant jump over the Series X, we could be looking at 3080 levels of GPU.

As an aside, whoever is responsible for naming Xbox consoles needs to slapped with a fish on the edge of a canal.

It sounds like fake news like the supposed 30M estimation for the next FY he mentioned or the GT7 delay.

They may release a new revision of the current one in the future with cheaper components, a 'slim' version (maybe the one with detachable disc drive he mentioned), but not a Pro.

They are barely starting to be able to mass produce the first one, and they are also manufacturing PSVR2, while also making PC ports and mobile games. It wouldn't make sense to put a Pro on top now.

Specially considering many teams are still relelasing crossgen games and that we still have to see the first games taking full advantage of next gen hardware and related game engines. Also, there's a ton of accumulated demand of people who couldn't buy the console plus there's the financial crysis and a ton of things like components or shipping prices skyrocketing. They won't need a Pro at all.

Releasing a ps5 pro will effectively bring an end to the last gen Series S.

I’m expecting it to happen. It happened last financial crisis and it’s going to happen during a potentially worse one.

It’s gonna be almost another decade long gen. I’m kinda all for it at the moment … we’re gonna be stuck in cross gen for awhile so it’s gonna take a bit more for current gen to get going.

I don't believe it. First of all, It would have to be on TSMC 3nm+ for it to have enough performance uplift to fit a pro spec, but 3nm+ isn't ready yet and it's extremely expensive (and afaik Apple have exclusive priority on the leading edge node wafer production). Second of all, this dude was claiming switch pro last year wasn't he? Maybe a pro in 2025 though.

Looks like GAF locked thread without reason.

Anyway, I'm expecting it to happen. Same reason why we get overpriced GPUs annually.

Edit: Seems unlocked now.

Why make a Pro when PS5 have not being pushed hard as the PS4 had, the only way to get great stuff is from selected 3P and the exclusives and those are taking time to release, so why bother?

This doesn’t make sense. Also, why give competitors a 1-2 years advantage when PS6 could be released before 2028 instead. Assuming an Xbox Series X one X and S are not in development already.

Insider Gaming sources have confirmed that the PS5 Pro is in development and could release with a tentative release date of late 2024.

Insider Gaming previously reported that a new PlayStation 5 with a detachable disc drive is scheduled to release later this year. It's understood that this new model will phase out the current PlayStation 5 to cut down on production and shipping costs. In spite of the widespread reports, this is not the PS5 Pro model.

This is "just the beginning of new hardware coming to PlayStation users this generation", said one source when talking about the detachable disc drive console.

As for what the PS5 specs will entail, details are limited. However, a recently-published patent by PlayStation architect Mark Cerny (spotted by @Onion00048) suggests that Sony Interactive Entertainment is looking to "accelerate" ray tracing performance in video games.

Just like with the PS4 to the PS4 Pro, we can generally guess pretty confidently that the PS5 Pro will have increased visuals, performance, and speeds. But as for leaked details, we'll have to wait until a later date to release those.

Insider Gaming understands that the next generation of the PlayStation, the PS6, is unlikely to release until at least 2028. This would put the current generation console release schedule in line with its predecessors.
