Yeah its a great idea, just as the market is starting to catch up to demand introduce a Pro model when its not needed at all yet.
The base PS5 has not even been used to its full extent yet and the only studios to come "close" are 1st Party.
A slim Model i could see but a pro is to soon for this gens lifespan.
it would just be a waste of money for Sony right now.

2028 is exactly what I expected for the PS6. With that timeline a PS5 Pro makes sense.

The ps4 continued to sell like hotcakes even after the Pro was released. If anything, a pro lowered the cost of the PS4 SKu and helped it sell to more people.

a PS5 pro would do the same and the OG PS5 would still sell like hotcakes. it isn't one or the other.

Why make a Pro when PS5 have not being pushed hard as the PS4 had, the only way to get great stuff is from selected 3P and the exclusives and those are taking time to release, so why bother?
I think it make sense of we start seeing games go back to 30fps and devs want the opportunity to push 60fps, plus raytracing which is limited on console.

I mean the ps4 pro did release after psvr and that was part of the narrative (stronger, better hardware for psvr) so who knows now that psvr2 has launched.

Also maybe an emphasis on better Raytracing capabilities.

Sony have to have a PS5pro in development or at least have an idea of how they would produce one, if needed.

Why? Because last gen MIcrosoft released the 1x, which is genuinely a good console, but it wasn't a 'pro' model of the Xbone, it was a new generation. All it had in common was the CPU where as everything else had a serious boost or changed completely (RAM).

If Microsoft do the same this gen and Sony don't release a Pro, by 2024 - when PS5 would have sold lots and lots of units, a new, super high-end Xbox has the potential to sell a lot of units to the hardcore crowd. The 1X had a significant increase in specs vs Xbox 1, if the same were to happen and a Series X 'X' were to have a significant jump over the Series X, we could be looking at 3080 levels of GPU.

As an aside, whoever is responsible for naming Xbox consoles needs to slapped with a fish on the edge of a canal.

Honestly I don't think a Series X Pro would do a lot to sell to the hardcore crowd because the baseline is still going to be Series S, and the question becomes what could a Series X Pro offer for the hardcore crowd that a moderately mid-gen GPU at that point can't provide? Especially if a Series X Pro still stayed with the same CPU as the current systems (and again since they'd still have to account for Series S I'd expect the CPU to stay the same or any extra power from a newer CPU being non-accessible by developers directly).

Personally I'd much rather have a generation without Pro models.

I don't believe it. First of all, It would have to be on TSMC 3nm+ for it to have enough performance uplift to fit a pro spec, but 3nm+ isn't ready yet and it's extremely expensive (and afaik Apple have exclusive priority on the leading edge node wafer production). Second of all, this dude was claiming switch pro last year wasn't he? Maybe a pro in 2025 though.

That might be true for anything aside TF. If hypothetical Pro models were on RDNA 3 or 4, they'd be using dual-issue shaders. That's how AMD increased the TF throughput while keeping the silicon costs down, though TF as a performance metric doesn't necessarily mean a lot for consoles (something Xbox diehards on Twitter like Colteastwood are still reeling over the reality of).

More dedicated RT hardware, more ROPs, more TMUs, more caches etc. yeah those would probably require 3nm or maybe they can get away with 5nm for those? What would a hypothetical Pro model with 7nm shader cores, 5nm-based ROPs & TMUs, 3nm-based caches etc. look like?

The series S will effectively be phased out and turned into a streaming console. The cheapest of cheap options, while the series X becomes the baseline. A new redesigned series X can get rid of the bottlenecks and a series X Pro will be able to host VR and compete in that market.

The way it stands now, the series consoles may as well not even exist. They're doing nothing that the 1x couldn't and whatever it can't do could be streamed to it anyway.

With all xboxs disarray and lack of good management around the ips they have, the worst thing they can do now is try to tackle VR. They are still trying to convince the masses that gamepass is the way to go.

Hell no. They still had to cater to the VCR xbo at the end of last gen and into this one, what makes you think they'll drop the S?

That will change when/if VR starts pulling in the big money. Microsoft chased home consoles, online gaming, the wii move control fad, Tv Tv Tv, mobile-esque gaming strategies and subscription services. To think they won't chase this one is possible, but not likely

Streaming wasn't an option back then. Xcloud and the Series X servers weren't completed until 2020/21. They will have to drop the S, or drop feature parity. I know which one they'll do first.

Plus, look how many SKUs microsoft launches in any gen they've been in. It's inevitable that we will see multiple S and X skus

It turns out MS can't just phase out the Series S unless they want to face a class action lawsuit. It's due to how they advertised & sold the thing; relegating it to streaming-only would probably see them face a litigation they haven't faced in decades.

So there's no way the Series X can become the new baseline. The only way MS could legally pull off what you suggest, is that they guaranteed all Series S owners free upgrades to Series X units for an unlimited time duration. And at that point they would be losing a ton more money on hardware because that buyers of a $299 box (in some cases $249, $199 or even $149!) getting a $499 upgrade at no extra cost.

But it's the only way MS can drop the Series S as a baseline and not face a terrible legal suit. They made that hell for themselves :/

Not everyone has the luxury of a monopoly to perpetually fund their losing business...

Dude really became a trash-tier poster after all. So glad they're on Ignore.

Series S can still exist as a console and it can stream all of the games that become out of reach of the power of the machine. That way, the console is still technically supported through streaming games and MS can release the anchor of the S from around their neck.

The series X then becomes the 'minimum' spec

I really want a Pro model that can bring everything up to at the very least 60fps and improve raytracing....

The other thing I'd really like is a smaller form-factor, something like the PS4 slim in size (could be a little bigger) and a nicer finish.... as I've said many times, something approaching or more like an Apple product.
