Winners and Losers: Starfield delights Xbox gamers while PS5 owners suffer a rare loss

It's a game-centric rendition of Winners and Losers this week as Microsoft made some sweeping gains to the detriment of Sony's fan base.

Loser: PS5 gamers​

The only downside we saw during the Starfield demo is that, following Microsoft’s purchase of Bethesda, the game will be a PC and Xbox exclusive. If you have a PS5 then you’re out of luck as Starfield won’t be launching on the platform.

Adding to the woes of PS5 gamers, the platform also lost a few other popular games. The biggest of these was Atlus’ beloved JRPG Persona 5, which was officially removed from the PlayStation Plus Collection.

This is a rare occurrence in the ongoing console wars, with Sony’s PlayStation platform traditionally outright dominating Xbox for game exclusives and original IP. This was a key reason we recommended the PS4 over the Xbox One back in the day. Exclusives included God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn and The Last of Us, which to this day are among the highest scoring games we’ve ever reviewed.

Given that Microsoft still has plenty more up its sleeve with other Bethesda properties, not to mention everything it swallowed up when it bought Activision, there could be more envious moments to come for Sony’s playerbase.

... And this is why Sony need to change their strategy.

Look at Deathloop and Tokyo Ghostwire. Look at losing the opportunity to lock-in Starfield as an exclusive.

Sony: I'll pay you loads of money today for some game content exclusitivity, or some timed-exclusitivity on a game itself. Then MS can back up the money truck to your house next week, buy all of your company for silly amounts of money, and then no one will buy the PS version of the game('s content), waiting 1-3 years to recieve an updated GOTY/Director's Cut edition on PC and/or XB GP.

I don't believe this will turn out true for Starfield, you're not hanging your hat on it and hoping for it personally, are you? I believe XB have been pretty clear that some of their games will be XB exclusive/exclusive to GP platforms, and Starfield is used to illustrate that point as the poster child.

This is the assumption for the xbox gamers, but they are already playing it day one for the subscription fee, they can't complain, right?
I mean, they will (console wars and such), but they will eventually understand that this is a company, not a charity and there is no such thing as infinite money.
Same as Sony when they chose to put games that aren't pushing revenue anymore on PC.
GP is sustainable, the money needs to come from somewhere else to cover the development.

I can see Elder Scrolls bring multiplat anyway due to its IP having an established PS community, and they won't want the backlash. Also I see Starfield getting average scores and being forgotten a few weeks after launch.

I fail to see how Sony hasn't been dominating. Xbox had Zero exclusives this year, and only a couple last year.

I won't be surprised if we end up getting a Starfield GOTY edition down the road.
I don't think it will flop either.
As much as I enjoy Skyrim, will I buy a XSX to play it?

Imagine "suffering" you cannot play Starfield on PS5... That's a "give beggars some free game on GP and call it a day" category, and it shows, from the beginning of their demo till the end.

That's Bethesda's MO, launch a terribly unfinished game, then let "the community get involved" and hope that they fix it for you, as they did with Skyrim and Fallout. So my personal take on this... keep that dumpster fire off my platform, please.

i thought that too, that Starfield for sure coming to PS5 after some time, but watching how m$ burning 80B on activision, i am not sure any more. they are more stupid then we giving them credit for and they have more money to burn then we thought they were willing.
