Over in hardware, and sales of games consoles in July dropped 7% month-on-month in the UK, according to GfK panel data. However, compared with July 2022, sales are actually up 7%.

PlayStation 5 remains the market leading format, with sales once again driven by pricing activity on the standard version of the console. PS5 sold very slightly more units in July than it did in June. By the end of July, PS5 sales are up 68% compared with the same period last year. That's already jumped further in August

The same isn't true for Nintendo Switch, which saw sales slide 15% in July compared with the month before. Year-to-date, Switch sales are down 8.5% for the first seven months of the year.

In third position is Xbox Series S and X. Microsoft's console saw sales tumble 12% in July compared with June. So far this year, Xbox console sales are down 22.8%.

As an aside, sales of PS4 are up 331% so far this year.

Finally, nearly 550,000 accessores were sold in the UK during July, a drop of 3% over June and 3% over July last year.

The charts are dominated by Sony DualSense controllers. The White edition retakes No.1 from the Black version, while Starlight Blue rises 14 places to No.18 and Grey Camo jumps five places to No.5. The Cosmic Red edition also jumped 11 positions to No.20. The controllers have benefitted from strong sales of PS5, plus some pricing activity at major retailers. The rest of the Top Ten is made up of Xbox controllers and Turtle Beach headsets, with Ear Force 50X at No.7 and Ear Force 50P at No.10.

Man, those demand production shortages are really impacting the Xbox consoles.

Xbox backwards compatibility sends old Call of Duty games back into the Top Five

Incredible stuff.

To think there's executives and their fans who think "why would anyone play this" at classic old games.

Damn, Microsoft unleashed the beast in PlayStation.

If they had a load of single player exclusives and put a hard stop on the PC ports with a big announcement, PS sales would just be unstoppable.

Theyre already insane TBH.
There seriously is no reason at this point for Xbox to even be in the game and sell hardware. They'd do better focusing on selling software to PS, Nintendo and PC. This isn't trolling just how I see things especially with their acquisitions. Leaving hardware and going third party software would also make Sony more open to gamepass like the other gaming options like EA, Ubisoft, etc because they wouldn't be direct competitors.

Xbox will becomes third party if they wants to profitable though, like open a storefront in Windows and ditch console hardware altogether.

Well they would if your console is running dry on current gen games.

Anyway they won’t be there next week.

Just a fad.

Speaking of won't be there.

Final Fantasy 16 already done? I guess those reports about Square being disappointed with the sales weren't fluff.

Reported because you're just trolling at this stage.

“Taking into consideration the sales figures of the acclaimed Final Fantasy 7 Remake and the difference in size of the install base of the PlayStation 4 at the time of this title’s release, we can see that the attach rate of Final Fantasy 16 is considerably high, given the PS5 install base.

“Square Enix considers the initial sales results of Final Fantasy 16 to be extremely strong, and we will continue to carry out a wide range of initiatives to encourage even more people to play the game.”

A resetera Mod named Ghostcrew attacking the OP for "console warring." Guess the resetera mod team got the call from phil that the propaganda wasnt all sunshine and rainbows!

"Bit sad that you decided to go with 'console versus' title (which is virtually the same every month - very boring) over the actual GI.biz article title which is fascinating in that two games from 2009 and 2012 rose from the grave to dominate the MONTHLY charts in July.

It's crazy news."

Are those copies are just sealed inventory copies that can be bought for like, 7 USD or 5 Sterling, which shops decides put on front page?

Probably just one-two thousand copies to make it to chart since UK is digital dominant.

Pretty sad if that was hyped up.

Considered those games are very popular like 10 years ago too, probably a lot of sealed in the wild.

Reported because FF16 isn't in the sales charts at all ? ok (y)

No, reported because you factually lied.

@Bryank75 keeping on allowing you back in when you have ZERO interest in honest and engaging discussion is one of the biggest mysteries in this forum. I for one am done with your bullshit, whataboutism, blatant lying, and blatant promotion of a company.

false information
What reports?

They said the opposite.

Like releasing it for Welfare Pass gamers would have made a difference.

Coupled with the fact that it's already out of the top charts and replaced by decade old games just a few weeks after release shows that it's already reached the peak of its sales cycle.

I wish I had that kind of influence over UK sales, the game is out of the top sales already, that is not a factual lie. There have been different reports of translations from the earnings report with the original translator deleting his tweet and then coming back with a more PR-friendly response a few days later.

With MS reinforcing its Stadia-like advertising message with ‘NO CONSOLE REQUIRED’ seems It’s only a matter of time for the hardware. Certainly doesn’t build trust in Microsoft’s continued support as a console maker.

Why are you using an article whose source has always lied about anything Playstation related?

You are incapable of not lying:

According to Bloomberg's report (behind a paywall), "Sales of the latest installment of the long-running role-playing title did not meet the high end of the company’s expectations" according to a statement provided by Kiryu-san during the post-earnings report conference call.

This was widely cited by several media outlets, which altered the wording in various ways, especially in their headlines, often to the effect that "Final Fantasy XVI failed to meet Square Enix's high-end expectations."

The change in wording and the fact that these outlets failed to provide an explanation of what that actually means (likely on top of previous statements by Square Enix about other games not meeting sales expectations in the past) are causing many to interpret the statement as Final Fantasy XVI not meeting Square Enix's expectations which were defined as "high-end" (Incidentally, the hyphen matters. "high-end" is an adjective. "high end" is a noun).

That is not what Kiryu-san said, assuming that the translation of the statement reported by Bloomberg is correct, which we won't know until Square Enix publishes the transcript of the conference call in a few days.

In financial terms, not meeting "the high end" of a company's expectations means that Square Enix expected Final Fantasy XVI's sales to fall within a range between a best-case scenario and a worst-case scenario. The game's sales did not meet the best case scenario (IE: the high end), but were still within the expected range, otherwise Kiryu-san would have said that it didn't meet the low end of the company's expectations.

He literally did not contradict what he said 😂 , he said the game failed to meet the high-end expectations, not expectations altogether.
