Fallout 4 was comfortably the best-selling game of April in the UK, according to the latest GSD data.

It was a quiet month for game releases last month. In the UK, 2.23 million games were sold, which is a drop of over 7% over the year before. However, it's worth noting that April 2023 featured the launches of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Dead Island 2, which boosted the market last year. There was no comparable title this year.

Fallout 4's surprise rise to the top comes after some steep discounts on the game that coincided with the smash hit Fallout TV show, which was released on Amazon last month.

Outside of Fallout 4, Fallout: New Vegas is up to No.8, Fallout 76 is at No.9 and Fallout 3 just misses out on the Top Ten at No.11. It's a great win for Bethesda and Microsoft, who have successfully capitalised on the increased attention the IP received last month.

There were no new games in the Top Ten for April, with PlayStation's Stellar Blade coming in at No.12. The action game was only on sale for one week when this data was counted.

Otherwise, it's business as usual for the charts, with Helldivers 2 continuing to do well at No.3, and EA Sports FC 24 at No.2. Plus the usual appearances of Call of Duty, GTA, Hogwarts Legacy and Red Dead Redemption 2.

Games consoles continue to struggle in 2024
Sales of video game consoles continue to struggle in the UK, with hardware sales down 39% over April to 71,000 units sold (GfK panel data).

All three major platforms continue to post declines, with overall console sales down nearly 30% year-to-date. So far this year, Xbox Series console sales are down just under 25%, PS5 sales are down just over 25%, and Switch sales are down 38%. It's a situation that's likely to continue until we have sight of new hardware or major game releases to help boost sales.

Elsewhere, 530,000 accessories were sold over April, a drop of 28% over March but up 7% over April last year. The DualSense White controller is back at the top, replacing the Black one that dominated in March. Xbox's White wireless controller holds second place, while the Ear Force Recon 50X Headset for Xbox has moved up two places to spot. We've also seen the Super Mario SD card for Nintendo Switch rising up the charts, with this month the memory card jumping to No.4 from No.7.

And they still wont permanetely drop the price either. The console is still 389 and 479 in its 4th year. People who buy in the middle of the gen expect a cheaper price not a higher price than at alunch. Them staying quiet and constantly pc pc pcpc pc isnt helping either.

Economic climate plus the fact the machines are stronger than they were(and thus more expensive to produce) means both Xbox/PS just means they seemingly can't "afford" to permanently reduce the prices.

We're entering the 4th year of this current gen and Sony still keeping the ridiculous high prices for ps5 and they're about to release a more expensive pro version

We have the same people complaining about PlayStation extending to PC in every thread, it's a bit ridiculous.

Also there is a reason why the PS5 hasn't received a price drop, because Sony can't afford to drop its price. The cost of components have increased not decreased. That's a new reality for console gaming.

You also had a major system seller in Hogwarts Legacy (released in February) pushing units still. There is nothing of the level of Hogwarts Legacy that has released this year.

What PC gaming has done. Sad sad shit
Effects of the pC strategy at work?
Yes, Helldivers 2 is pretty likely PS Studios' most successful game release ever.

Regarding PS5 hardware sales dropping, it's normal because last year got an exceptional sales bump due fixing the console shortages. And on top of that, the previous year was its hardware sales peak year, meaning that as happens with any console in gaming history yearly sales keep increasing until the peak year, and after the peak year its sales decreases every year.

Comparing the launch aligned sales of PS5 vs the other current and previous consoles it's one of the best ever, and the PS active userbase (PS4 counts too) they are on all time records.

So there if there is any effect of the PC strategy, it's being positive for PS5.
no price cuts+ more PC releases than console releases will surely result in a great sales year 🤠
This is a lie, Sony has more releases on console than in PC.

Ps5 needs a price cut now

Every generation the prices of the hardware components go down over time, which allowed them to price cut previous consoles.

This generation that didn't happen, these prices went up instead (same goes with shipping costs) meaning that they must lose more money per console sold than at launch. Over time the inflation and hardware, fuel, etc. prices keep increasing.

Meaning they can't price cut it, in fact they had to increase its price.

It's remarkable how the PS5 sells worse than PS4. Although the xbox is dead

I love the additional context that dring gives without mentioning that the PS4 Pro came out last year launch aligned with the PS5.

Being slightly behind the PS4 without releasing the PS5 Pro, isn't a big deal. The PS5 Pro will probably push the PS5 back on track saleswise, if not give it a significant lead by the end of the fiscal year.

Edit: Yup, someone called him out on the very next tweet...
