I've "completed" playing Animal Well, an indie metroidvania developed by Billy Basso, and published by Bigmode. The game is nominated for best indie title in this year's TGAs, and it would probably take about 8~10 hours playing blindly to reach the credits rolling.

Overall, I'd say it's a pretty decent metroidvania, though it's mostly void of a narrative. The game relies upon you instinctually completing tasks and solving puzzles to progress. You play as a little... blob? Idk what else to call it. In metroidvania fashion, you'll start with nothing, and gradually expand your exploration capabilities with little tools, such as a frisbee disc, yoyo, bubble wand, etc. Many of the tools have multiple ways of utilization, and sometimes even a hidden property which you'll stumble across by accident.

I've used "completed" in this context, because while the credits rolled, this is one of those games with a substantial amount of post-game activity to partake in. The puzzles range from extremely easy, to pretty obscure and challenging. What's impressive is how much of this post-game content is layered on top of the game. The main quest has you seeking out four flames scattered across the map; however, the true search is for eggs. Yes, the game is basically a giant egg hunt metroidvania. Even once I thought I'd reached the "end," there was still an additional layer of content and puzzles to solve.

Collectively, I played about 15 hours, and if I were grading myself, I'd say I achieved about an 90% completion rate, excluding some of the challenge locked features. I don't know if I "loved" the game, but that's partially due to my tepidness on the genre overall. Even so, I thought they demonstrated a good utilization of all the basic hallmarks of the genre, including a deep world with many hidden puzzles, tricks, and secrets. Towards the end of last year, I played Tunic, and this reminded me a lot of that game's approach to puzzle design. The last metroidvania game I played was Metroid Dread several months back, and I enjoyed Animal Well a bit more than that.

I think this is probably an easy recommendation to make for metroidvania, or puzzle/exploration fans. For anyone else, there's a fun game here, but temper your expectations if you're seeking a grand narrative, or similarly grand gameplay elements.

I'm testing emulation on an Intel 11th gen iris laptop I got from my job. But on my desktop PC I'm going over the GTA trilogy now that it has been patched. Doing missions randomly in all three games.

It shows how little game design has evolved this past 20 years... because other than some minor inconveniences like lack of checkpoints it's very playable.

Playing Dragon's Dogma 2 finally and put in about 22 hour so far. I am impress with the Pro patch of this game. Playing on performance with motion blur off and RT on and I feel the frames been fine hovering between 50-60 fps. Resolution also looks clean on the PS5 Pro.

I've begun playing ARCO, a Mesoamerican fantasy RPG developed by Franek, Max Cahill, Bibiki, and Fayer. It's published by Panic. The game was nominated for Best Indie at the Golden Joysticks this year.

The gameplay is a bit hard to describe. It's almost like real-time with pause, from RPGs of old.

I'll have a bit more to contribute once I've completed it.

Played all 7 available co-op missions in Space Marine 2. Thanks to the ps5 pro… yup, performance hugely improved and I didn’t notice anywhere near the frame drops, if any noticeable at all, as I did with the standard ps5.

The co-op is okay. They’re basically kinda like strikes from Destiny or glorified campaign missions. They were good even if a bit too much aimless running but that’s a teammate issue. It could use a lot of QoL tools and updates but decent foundation for a future game.

Maybe I can get some more mileage out of this before there’s no players left to matchmake. Will give the next difficulty a run. I’ll be happy if I can get another 20 or so hours more.

Starting a new game of Elden Ring. Came at a time when I was feeling open world fatigue and I generally prefer Bloodborne over every other from game I’ve played. I like its metroidvania world design generally over all else. Looking forward to it. Improved performance makes a huge difference tbh.

So.... I had my entire Sunday free which is quite rare, and I beat Shadow Generation in one sitting lol. That was unexpectedly a spectacular game holy shit lol, banger ost and some really well made levels that are quite addicting to retry. Also a sick hub world, reminds me of SM64....

I tried Sonic Generations but man it feels so dated to me IMO, but it does remind me of Sonic Advanced (which I adored as a kid)

But damn.... worth it for Shadow alone, hoping Sonic Team does more with that gameplay formula, works VERY well.

YS X is up next....

Completed Dragon Age: The Veilguard.
  • Visuals - 10/10 (superb)
  • Audio - 9.0/10 (excellent)
  • Gameplay/Combat - 9.0/10 (excellent)
  • Story/Characters - 10/10 (superb)
  • Overall - 9.5/10 (excellent)
Over 105 hours of total play time. Map completion was around 90%. Missed a few treasure chests and whatnot. Played as the Rogue class. Human. Grey Warden. Played in Performance Mode with a custom difficulty level.

Visually, the art style and art direction is superb. Loved all the different environments and regions. No issues or complaints with the visuals. Audio wise, the voice acting is great, sound effects are really good and the music is excellent.

Gameplay/combat wise, really enjoyed it all. From the combat itself to the platforming to the puzzle solving to the different setups that you can use for The Rook and for the different setups you can use with your companions. My biggest issue/complaint was the lock on system as it didn’t always stay locked on to the target I wanted or didn’t work the way I wanted it to. Movement felt clunky at times and the camera wouldn’t be in the spot you wanted especially during bigger fights. Also, while a pet peeve of mine, I found it funny that your can’t swim/float and would drown in deep water.

Story/character wise, I thought everything for the most part was excellent, liked all the characters and enjoyed it all for the most part. The Taash stuff is cringe but it’s maybe 30 minutes if that and doesn’t affect/change anything or hurt/take away anything from the overall story and characters. I know those who didn’t like the story was because everyone gets along but to be honest, plot wise, that makes sense because if you’re fighting with each other, you don’t stand a chance at accomplishing what you need to accomplish.

The main quests were all excellent from the locations to the objectives to what the goals were. Side/region quests were mostly good. Companion quest lines were better. The rewards were mostly good. The gear setup was different in where you can get a duplicate of what you already have and it increases the quality of it to the next level which is cool because you don’t have to waste gold/resources upgrading it until later on in the game.

Overall, enjoyed the game from beginning to end. I really don’t understand what people were complaining about. In fairness, I will say that outside of a few hours of Origins which I don’t even remember, this is basically the first game in the series that I truly played and completed so maybe that has something to do with it. I don’t know. Either way, I loved and enjoyed the game. No real major issues, negatives or complaints. Outside of the environments going nuts before starting the end game and having to reload, no technical issues whatsoever. Looks, plays and runs great on Xbox Series X.

As of now, Dragon Age: The Veilguard is my 2024 game of the year and I don’t see the other few games (Star Wars Outlaws, Tales of Kenzera: Zau, Visions of Mana, COD BO 6 campaign and Indiana Jones) that I still have/want to play beating it out. It’s also my 2nd best game overall of the generation behind only Starfield.

In general, this generation has been a series of “firsts” for me. Completed my first ever Bethesda Game Studios game in Starfield, my first ever 343/Halo game in Halo Infinite (campaign) and now, my first ever BioWare/Dragon Age game in The Veilguard.

Next up for me will be Tales of Kenzera: Zau which I bought last week for $10 as I was looking for a replacement for Stalker 2 since I wasn’t into that game at all and dropped it. After Kenzera, I will wait for Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.

Awesome! I'm waiting for it to hit a few more rounds of sales discounts, but I'm definitely interested in checking this one out!
