When Xbox consoles stop being made, how high will PlayStation sales go?

With Xbox in terminal decline, despite massive investment and acquisitions, it seems that Xbox hardware is inevitably going to end in the near future.

What does this mean for PlayStation in terms of direction and sales potential?

What numbers could we see and is it positive?

I guess it depends where those who is now looking for a main platform deflects to. Sure some would get a PS5 but some who blamed Sony for the demise of the Xbox console would probably get a PC. A low end one and pretend their part of the high end “master race”

Don't really see them gaining a huge spike if Xbox should exist to be honest maybe an extra 10+ million.

Damn, I was gonna say they could hit over 150 million but I guess even adding 10 million puts them in that range when you add natural growth and the fact they could have so many exclusives.

But it does put into perspective that PC suddenly becomes the main competition.

Probably 20-30m worldwide. But that's IF Xbox stop releasing consoles in their current form and pricing.

Like if they suddenly decide to take consoles to a premium tier (like $800 per pop or something), then that number goes down.

However, the real advantage Sony gains is probably locking down the high perf console segment for the foreseeable future.

Which honestly doesn't sound great when you really sit and think about it.

I mean they could gain more but we also don't know how much overlap between systems there are. But maybe around 20+ million extra, maybe I lowballed a little lol.

But PC will also play a role and I'm sure Xbox would def try to migrate libraries to PC to stop the bleeding..

10M maximum. Majority that own an Xbox Series X (like I do) already own a PlayStation 5 and would also own a PlayStation 6 so it's not going to increase much. Consoles have their 120M-130M limit. I don't ever see PlayStation 2 at 155M being surpassed unless it's by Nintendo.

Well, it's good to have someone like you here that knows the Xbox audience so we'll. What yous ay makes a lot of sense, in terms of Xbox users habits and preferences.

I'm optimistic that if Sony are determined they can get past 150 but I might be too bullish... Or Sony might not care about reaching that.

You do know im the same Peter that was here last summer, right? I don't know if that's a good thing or bad thing though. lol

There's a few PlayStation exclusives releasing in the next two months that im going to be playing and im sure many here will be as well so I signed back up so I can have a "playstation" forum to where I can discuss these games. :)

As for the topic, it's not just if Microsoft ends consoles (I don't believe that they will actually do that as I believe their plan goes beyond what anyone is thinking) but also the fact that as every year goes by, more and more consumers mainly kids and teenagers are going with cell phones, tablets to play mobile games or if their parents/family have a PC, they go there. The console market is something I don't ever see growing because the majority of those who get into gaming now is via mobile where as with me or you or others here, we're older and grew up with console gaming.

I don't see any of the three going beyond PS2. Nintendo is the only shot because their console is a hybrid and due to the portability of it, it's basically a mobile device for younger gamers who just don't care about the console experience.

I can only see Sony going past PS2 if they cut the price sooner rather than later which let's be honest, probably isn't going to happen. Late 2024 would be when a price cut maybe happens due to the Pro releasing but I think it's more likely that the Pro comes in at $600 while the current PS5 models stay at $450 and $500 respectively.

Perfect bait thread for me.

150 million should be the new normal. Failure to move that many units in a 7 year cycle begs complete house cleaning at SIE.

No ifs or buts... or a mountain of excuses.

This really won't happen until next generation, so 2027 or 8, IMO, at the earliest. At that point it really is too early to say.

I think there's an important portion of the Xbox userbase who already totally moved to PS or at least has both consoles. I think there's also a portion who totally moved to PC or plays on both Xbox and PC.

Once they stop releasing new consoles, these groups (plus the ones remaining as Xbox only) would totally move to PS or PC, with preference to PS or PC depending on what they already use. Most of the ones remaining as Xbox only would move to PS due to preference of playing on console.

Ignoring the ones who already moved totally or partially to PS, I think there are like maybe up to 10-15M who could move to PS as new users.

Around 50% of the people buying PS5s a year ago didn't have PS4, so they were coming very likely from Xbox or from PC (maybe thanks to the PC ports).

I don't think it would increase much. Maybe a few of the casuals who get a console just for FIFA/Madden/COD will make the switch to follow the trend, but the core fanbase will continue to do what they are already doing:

Not playing games and bashing PlayStation on X.

FWIW, as an American I do see lots of retards in my every-day life who own an Xbox just for CoD and maybe Forza. I can see them switching to PlayStation next generation if Xbox either ceases to exist or does something really dumb (plug it into your eye! give us your SSN and PIN number!, etc)

As well all know, US the big market they have. And since xbox games will be on everything, it's about 30% increase to ps, pc and nintendo hardware. But that is from ps5 outselling it 2 to 1 so it is not even 5 million people.

Where it’s at.
Xbox sales are so low at this point, I don’t think it would lead to a significant gain, honestly.

I was reading some credible analysis that suggested a fair chunk of Series S sales were a case of substitution sales when PS5 was in short supply, so a fair number of Xbox Series owners may already not be using their Xbox or may have gotten rid of it already.

There is no any provided data that majority of XSX owners also has a PS5. Since Peter are equalizing himself = majority. Yeah.... Like for example there is a NPD data bunch of PS5 owners has a NSW.

If you don't do any Xbox astroturfing, you are good to go.

I’d be shocked if MS hasn’t already stopped manufacturing, with how they overstuffed the channel.

Most likely, they’re waiting for a certain amount of standing stock at retailers to be sold off so they can formally announce the discontinuation of Xbox hardware.

Remember, they can keep selling games for the rest of the generation even if they’ve killed off the hardware, and they’re dropping physical media at a few retailers already.

Xbox dying off officially will be the quietest death of a console ever, since it’s already 90% done.

That is true. Dreamcast got a game a year after its death. xbox can still make everything they make for the others, for maybe 3 years or 5 years since dev time is longer now.

I think they'll stay in the industry as publishers and we'll see major changes to how gamepass works, the worst decision they could make was bringing it to PC. As someone with limited income that chose to buy a playstation 5 (specially since pretty much all my library came from the ps4) I have no reason whatsoever to buy an Xbox. The only reason was GamePass, no need to buy new games if they come to the service right? but since its also on PC (although in a limited form) why would I buy a console when I can have the better versions of their games on a much much better machine?
