Why was Sony so tight lipped about Bloodborne sales when it actually sold well? Why don't they care?

Many had the impression based on Sony not talking about certain sales numbers such as Bloodborne that it wasn't really successful. The last official numbers we had were somewhere in 2015 that it sold a little more than a 2 million, fast forward and we only know it sold more than 7 million because of the Sony leaks!

"Speaking of long-awaited sequels, the leaks reveal that Bloodborne has sold over 7 million copies so far. While that game’s successes isn’t that surprising, it’s worth noting that we previously only knew that Bloodborne had sold over 2 million copies as of 2015. The leaks reveal that the game is actually much more successful than that, which will surely only raise more questions about why we haven’t gotten a sequel or PC port. Of course, it’s been speculated for quite some time now that the complicated nature of both of those projects (and FromSoftware’s incredibly busy schedule) are the biggest reasons why they haven’t come to fruition rather than the implication that Bloodborne simply wasn’t successful".

This should all teach us something, just because a game isn't talked about in terms of sales doesn't mean it did bad or something negative is going on.

This. Sony has been tight lipped in general for quite some time, but it's similar to Nintendo in that regard.

Sony didn't talk about TLOU2 sales that doesn't mean it was selling bad... in fact it was selling better than the first game.

That is my point. Ppl think because things aren't talked about it's going bad.

Also Sony does talk about sales generally this quietness with them is new.

The way Sony announces software sales doesn't seem to have any logic to it
Exactly, it's like they arbitrarily pick and choose what thy report on, it's weird although I'm sure there is a reasoning behind it.

Days Gone sold 7.5 million but there was zero mention of that, it's just weird

This means that reviving the IP would be a licensing nightmare.

Also Bloodborne has a notoriously shit Engine that requires Fromsoftware to work with and they are preocupied.

I think they don't tie them to sales milestones but to events.
Like they will make a big headline about GoW then they see if it is proper to give some milestone.
That is why it looks like no logic.

Hmmm never thought of it like tht. But certain sales numbers are milestones as well. Mostly I see them talk about numbers when it's 10 mil and better.

Probably because that was over a long period of time and most of those were probably at a substantial discount. I’m 2 million its first yr isn’t particularly great. 7 million is probably the 2nd lowest out of the From souls/bone/ sekiro games not counting demons souls remake.

It's still a good number even taking into consideration more than half not sold at full price. Plus it came out in 2015 barely two years since PS4 release so install was not too high.

As for Fronsift games they weren't particularly popular until Demon Souls was localized here in PS3. From owes alot of its success to that launching pad.

The one that baffles me the most is GT sport.

It sold over 12 million!

That is crazy for a racing game to sell this much especially with racing games not being as big as they use to be in previous generations.

You'd think they'd be shouting from the rooftops, but the only thing we got a while back was the number of players lol.

Shouldnt really feel sad for gt sport

Cos GT7 has it in the bag its an improvement over sport and polyphony digital still making gt game

What we should really be sad about are those abandoned game studio like ready at dawn, quantic dreams, liverpool studios etc

Because they are unreasonable, they did the same thing with Days Gone. Anything that isn't a huge 10m+ success is internally seen as a failure.

To them every game needs to pull off Uncharted, Spider-man, God of War, Horizon, TLoU, numbers.

They have no reason to announce sales numbers of all their games, only a few hardcore die hard fans like us care about them.

In their context, having over half a dozen of their AAA games getting over 20M sales, one of them achieving 7.5M isn't something worth to brag about. For their scale this is only a successful niche AAA title.

They didn't close Japan Studio. They restructured and rebranded it, merging its internal development teams. They also branched off their XDEV 2nd party publishing team to have their own office where they'd be able to grow and work in way more games at the same time than before.

Sony owns the Bloodborne brand, so if desired they can make a remaster, remake or sequel without FromSoft, as they did with Demon's Souls (brand also owned by Sony).

I think that the reason of not giving a PS5 version or remaster of Bloodborne is because they may consider that only games that reach a certain sales level (higher than the 8M Bloodborne ones) are worth to get a remaster.

Or that maybe they have been waiting for FromSoft to be free from previously agreed projects like Elden Ring and AC6 to be ready to work for them again. Or maybe they are waiting because plan to release in the future relatively close to each other a remaster+pc port+PS5 only sequel+tv show/movie/anime adaptation, and since the sequel and adaptation may need time then they are holding back the remaster and port.
