I love how all the people crying about game budgets being too high are usually the first ones to burn a developer over the witchfire for mistreatment of employees, and layoffs.
Like, yes, those things are bad, but what do you think happens to employees when a company downsizes? The vast majority of budget is salaries. Payroll is literally the most expensive part of game development. Either they fire a whole bunch of people, or they reduce their game development cycles substantially which results in a significantly worse product for you.
There is no middle ground here once a company reaches a certain size. You can't just reduce everybody's pay suddenly, or worse, ask them to work big portions of a dev cycle for free.
I dunno who that guy is, but he's probably a fucking idiot. The cathedral moment Shawn was talking about comes with the implication that you don't really need to build a big expensive cathedral to extort money from your followers, when a small shitty church will do the job just fine.
Defending this is insane, because it effectively means you're advocating for the organization to extract the same money from you and giving you less in return.
