this is a hard one for me because I actually loved Killzone Shadow Fall and Littlebigplanet 3 but then stuff like Astro''s playroom wrecks The playroom. Spider-Man 2 and God of War Ragnarok is above anything on the PS4 list. and Horizon Forbidden West and it's burning Shore's DLC we're both amazing. Until Dawn is another one that really make's it hard for me to just say PS5 tho.

Killzone I really didnt like lol. Looked beautiful but I tried multiple times to play it and it was so far away from KZ 2-3.

Bloodborne and Uncharted 4 for me were too good. God of War Ragnarok was up there with them if not a tad better than Uncharted 4 for me.
Returnal was amazing too.

Overall I was happier with PS4 because, all exclusive to PS4 ( no cross gen, no PC ) and we also knew officially at this point that we’re getting TLOU2, God of War, Spiderman, Dreams, Days Gone etc.

And that year (2017, same as 2024) we got Horizon, Knack 2, GT Sports, Lost Legacy and Gravity Rush 2 all from PS studios, not including 3rd party/“1st party” etc.

We know very little whats coming. We might get Concord and Astrobot (which would be great). And we know near to nothing about the what the rest of studios are doing, officially anyway

Don't get me wrong, I wish Sony would return to working on more smaller games too but they've confirmed that 55% of first-party titles will be new IP by 2025. PS Studios has been pretty meh overall this gen but the lineup has a ton of new IP:

- Returnal
- Destruction AllStars
- Concord
- Fairgame$
- Naughty Dog are rumored to be working on a new IP
- Bend New IP
- London Studio New IP
- Insomniac New Marvel IPs
Come on man, I specifically made the thread to look at something set in stone instead of speculation and unreleased games. This is about what has been delivered so far.

I also would advise against betting that the PS5 will have a better second half than what the PS4 had.

In the second half of the PS4 Bend in fact released a new IP in Days Gone, SSM completely re-imagined God of War and Insomniac released Spider-man (if you are counting Wolverine as a new IP so was Spider-man). There were also Horizon, Detroit, Dreams, Death Stranding and Ghost of Tsushima.

Fairgame$ looks no better than you average nasty Ubisoft GaaS that is bombs and is forgotten. Could you even tell me what Concord is about?

Well PS4 had cross gen, LittleBigplanet 3, Hell divers, and Resogun were crossgen. Resogun and Helldivers were cross gen with PS3 and PS Vita and Helldivers also released on PC on the same year it released on PS4. Also don't forget in the late PS3 era Sony was selling PS1 games on the gaming xperia phone

And then also add TLOU1 Remaster for PS4.
I agree about burning Shores though

But 2017 had some big hits from PS studios compared to 2024’s PS studios games
and add ghost of tsushima director's cut for PS5

you include DLC's like
Infamous First Light
Killzone: Shadow Fall Intercept
on the PS4 list but don't have Horizon Burning Shores or the new God of War DLC.

Also why did you include Tearaway unfolded and Sound Shapes? I thought you said remasters and rereleases don't count?
you should add The Last of Us Part 2 remastered and Death stranding Director's Cut to the PS5 list to even it out
Those were released as stand alone games.

Tearaway is not exactly the same game as the Vita one. It's also not like it was playable on the PS3, it was only playable on the Vita before. If anything I should've also included Gravity Rush.

I removed Sound Shapes, I didn't notice it wasn't a new game.

and add ghost of tsushima director's cut for PS5
The PS5 actually looks worse if you open the door of including remasters, the PS4 gets Gravity Rush, Heavy Rain, Flow, Flower, Uncharted Collection, God of War III, Beyond Two Souls, Journey, Super Stardust HD, Dead Nation, etc.

Overall I was happier with PS4 because, all exclusive to PS4 ( no cross gen, no PC ) and we also knew officially at this point that we’re getting TLOU2, God of War, Spiderman, Dreams, Days Gone etc.
That is a key difference to me as well, perhaps the biggest difference even.

They are ports, not "remakes" because were on other systems, not the PS4 before.

For the DLCs you are dead on.

Either way, we had more Sony made games in the PS4 generation, and that was considered a down time for Sony back then.

I'd say that while PS5 has more heavy-hitters than PS4 did during both platform's respective first 3 years, most of PS5's are cross-gen (HFW, GOW Ragnarok, GT7 etc.) while in PS4's case very few were. And if they were, they were exceptions, such as TLOU Remastered, because the PS4 couldn't do native BC of PS3 games.

While there's some variety on PS5's side, there's considerably more on PS4's and, more critically, there are a lot more games. You can also see that they have a good mix of AAA and AA, something that gradually just went away at SIE following 2017.

If it weren't for the 3P exclusives, this comparison list would kind of remind me of the ones I've seen for Xbox going from the early 360 years to latter years of that platform, where the amount of 1P output just sank like a stone. On a pure quality POV SIE's 1P is still hitting the highs, arguably higher in some cases like when you compare GT7 to GT6 (or GT Sport), or Helldivers 2 to the 1st game (I know Sony doesn't own Arrowhead but they do own the IP).

That said, some of their bigger releases have had a few more glitches and technical issues at launch versus the past, and I don't think that's 100% due to increases in complexity for game development. The fact some of these games are now Day 1 on PC or take anywhere from 6 months to 2 years to port to the platform, is likely causing some optimization issues. And from the Insomniac hack, we know that many of these games have simultaneous PS5 & PC development taking place, which would also contribute to those types of hiccups.

It's a big reason why I hope SIE seriously re-evaluate that part of their multi-platform strategy, so where at least the non-GaaS AAA titles have more room to breath focused purely on the console not just for development, but for commercial viability too (IMO the window should be at least 4-6 years for those games between console & PC), and the money & resources saved in doing PC ports of those games can be shifted to doing more 1P AA games that can leverage not just the console but also mobile.

But at this point I guess we'll see what happens, huh? :/...

Removed standalone DLCs to simplify things.

Sony did bother porting a lot of game to PS4 tho even if those were very demanding. Heavy Rain, Beyond Two Souls, Uncharted Collection, God of War III, Flow, Jouney, Flower, Dead Nation, Super Stardust HD, etc. It's a shame that at some point they stopped doing it.

Edit: Title is wrong, should be [2020-2023] for PS5

Ignoring MLB since they were published every year on both.
Only including games published by Sony.
Ignoring remaster, rereleases and VR games.

New IPs are underlined.
Blue ones have not been ported to PC as of this moment.

PS5
Astro's Playroom
Demon's Souls
Destruction AllStars

Returnal

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
The Last of Us Part I
Marvel's Spider-Man 2

Crossgen:
Sackboy: A Big Adventure
Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales
Horizon Forbidden West
Gran Turismo 7
God of War Ragnarök
PS4
Killzone: Shadow Fall
Knack
Driveclub

Infamous Second Son
The Playroom
Bloodborne

Tearaway Unfolded
The Order: 1886
Until Dawn

Everybody's Gone to the Rapture
Ratchet & Clank
The Last Guardian
Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
Alienation
The Tomorrow Children

Hardware: Rivals

Guns Up!
Fat Princess Adventures

Crossgen:

Doki-Doki Universe
Resogun

LittleBigPlanet 3
Entwined
Singstar

Hohokum
Helldivers

There was a lot of fodder in the PS4 list but SIE estudios despite being considerable smaller at that time was very productive

They were also porting tons of games to PS4 from PS3 during that time since there was no backwards compatibility. PSVR also released on both at around the same time and until 2015 Sony was still supporting the PS Vita.

To think that PS4 was the follow up to the PS3 and PSVita while the PS5 is following up the PS4...

I never expected things to slow down so much. Sony strategy is pretty clear, pretty much AAA, GaaS or bust. Using temporary exclusives as a crutch and on top of that porting everything to PC.

Also, now, just like every other publisher they are scared of new IPs. Sony used to be the exception when it came to this.

This Totoki guy is going to be the boss of whoever end up being the new President/CEO and the new guy will probably be handpicked by him. These bean counters are likelly going to destroy Sony and PlayStation in the long run.

By the end of the year 2024, is equivalent to 2017.

In 2017 PS4 also got:

Horizon
Uncharted Lost Legacy
Gravity Rush 2
Gran Turismo Sport
Knack 2

For PS5 we might get in 2024:
Concord
Astrobot?

Which is fine if we get that. Ive tested before and spoke to developers who make something like Astrobot, it doesnt take 4+ years, it takes less.

And don’t forget Bluepoint made Demons Souls ( a PS5 only next gen game in 2 years, after Shadow of the Colossus )

They need to either get another studio like Bluepoint who can make remakes that great so quick, or tell Bluepoint to get back to doing that. We could of had 2 high quality Remakes from them since Demons Souls. MGS, Castle SOTN, Syphon Filter, Ico, Uncharted 1, God of War 1, Silent Hill, KillZone, Resistance, Infamous etc etc

PS4 without a doubt?

Infamous
Resogun
The Order 1886
Until Dawn
Bloodborne
Uncharted 4 - multiplayer (ah the days when Naughty Dog could get both out on time) RIP
DriveClub
Ratchet

PS5 - has Ratchet, Returnal, Demon Souls and Spiderman 2

Now Helldivers

Absolutely the worst PlayStation generation so far.

Since you've counted Bloodborne and The Order for PS4, mind you then because these games , Stellar Blade, Death Stranding 2 also can be on the list.

Jim Ryan (and probably Sony's top management) : We have problems with the stable release of new AAA, old and new IPs?

Solution: Crush the Days Gone sequel, and throw resources into GaaS! Existing system sellers, port to torrent, and end the Only on Playstation brand, and bury partnerships with Japanese game developers like Yakuza!

What could be going wrong?

And it seems to me that in the second half of the generation, things will get even worse.

Of course, there will be games from partners, as well as the release of GTA VI, but don't expect a stream of cool releases as it was in 2018-2020.

Also, how about to compare PS2 list vs. PS4? PS2 will demolish PS4. For very obvious reason, game development went more expensive, harder and longer to make which leads to less games. Because bunch gamers have a fish brain, they don't understand shit about it

This entire post is nothing but attempted DOA damage control and cope. Let's go back to PS2 when Sony's first party wasn't that strong so we can make their worst generation look better

It is not damage control. LOL It is very obvious for years how game development went. But some blind gamers like you can't and wont see it for very obvious reason. You just looking at numbers of released games. Be realistic
