March 2023 NPD, PS5 has outsold PS4 in the same time period (29 months), PS5 best-selling in both units and dollar sales, Switch #2, Xbox #3

Yep. Xbox is simply unable to effectively compete with PlayStation in its strongest markets, US & UK, and it's getting torn apart even worst in Europe, Asia, and the ROTW. People thought I was crazy for speculating they were trending behind XBO sold-through by the end of 2022 but I guess that isn't looking so crazy now, is it?

There is just little to no momentum for Xbox in these markets and a good part of that is because of the sheer momentum Sony and Nintendo have. But their momentum is reward for just being better competitors in an open market, it's not a result that in and of itself should enable Microsoft to try buying their way to relevancy. So the fools who think them being in 3rd is going to be useful ammo to buy up more publishers are in for a very rude awakening; regulators actually don't mind market dominance when it involves real competition, and there will always be losers in that game. Microsoft just happens to be the loser in this instance.

I think Microsoft's best hope is to just ensure their 1P is as polished and consistent as possible, and really build their 1P up so that their 10th-gen Xbox can enjoy the fruits of that labor similar to how PS4 enjoyed the fruits of PS3's labor when that system was in the process of rebuilding itself from a bad start. But I can say this right now: if Starfield is not the magnum opus people in the fanbase clearly think it should be, if it launches as a technical mess, if it doesn't do well critically with the gaming community...then I think Microsoft's prospects as a platform holder are finished.

Their future as a platform holder worth having trust in and inspiring people great things for future big 1P games that aren't Forza, kind of hinges now on how Starfield performs. It's become that symbolic and that's in large part because of how terrible Halo Infinite has performed. If the worst-case scenario plays out, I think Microsoft are just better off transitioning Xbox into a PC gaming-centric brand hardware-wise and going fully multiplatform. That way they can divert focus on Xbox as a traditional console (which clearly aren't paying off) and put that towards their mobile storefront, which is a new frontier they could actually be quite successful with if something like Xbox isn't acting as a distracting anchor.

Keep in mind, I'm not saying MS should shutter Xbox hardware altogether. I just mean managing it on a traditional console business model, wouldn't be a smart move anymore. So, make them Windows machines geared towards fine-tuned gaming (take a page out of Valve's book with Steam Deck and Steam Machines), and for next gen, priced closer to a NUC-style PC where they can profit off the hardware Day 1. For Series S & X, just offer a full Windows upgrade for $199. Since PS and Nintendo aren't actually competitors anymore, no reason to not bring all XGS/Zenimax/ABK games to them (provided they can run the games). Focus on expanding Game Pass to more platforms, focus on your mobile storefront.

All upsides, little to no downsides.

Must've pained Welfare to type that. Although even I'm surprised the gap between both platforms is that large here in the US. Just shows how much Xbox as a brand is regressing even in its strongest territories.
What does Xbox even have going on for it?

The promise that maybe a few years from now you won't have to pay to play CoD you pay a monthly subscription? CoD already has a F2P mode in Warzone anyway and people that actually like CoD probably are ok with paying for it.

Bethesda and Activison catalog games on Gamepass? Like PlayStation Plus already has?

Redfall and Starfield? At 30FPS?

Gamepass being more expensive than PS+ Extra and having an inferior catalog? Live Gold being an embarrassment compared do PS+ Essencials?

The Series S being one of the most poorly thought-out consoles ever?

Their terrible store on PC?

xCloud that nobody cares about?

How hard was he holding back tears as he typed that?
You just love me being in your head huh
What a turnaround. He was here saying Xbox was selling more ROTW and stronger than last gen. Weird.

Did the users here finally convinced him?
It was. That's just verifiable fact.
"Rest of the world could still be making up for things not going well in NA, UK, Europe and Japan."
I know you're trolling but Europe had less of a decline last quarter than the US did. Q1 US should be around -33% or more while Europe was -10%, UK -18%

He was denying the obvious with tons of useless wall text.

The fact continue being the same since this new gen started in November 2022…

Series is doing relatively worst than Xbox One and it was only ahead it because Xbox One launch was split in tier for the whole first 2 years (Series released in a lot more countries than Xbox One).

And to be fair the Series S SKU turned to be a bad decision instead the “genial” take some used to say lol
We've gone over this before lol

XBS was massively behind the XB1 in the US and UK since 2020 while also being ahead of it worldwide.

XBS sales up to Q3 2022 don't get retroactively worse because of today's results. It's only recently that XBS is stagnating while PS5 grows.

Just like I expected. Man, how hard is it to let go of the hope that the Xbox Series is doing well?

There are no angles or excuses for it, it flopped. This is not an acceptable performance for a console in it's third year and there is no way to come back from this.

A game that can’t be named on ERA is at 2nd place :D :D :D

It is a joke with how ERA removed the 1st place in February NPD and tried to say CoD was the best seller… after got laughed with memes they fixed the images and titles to show the real #1.

The #1 on Feb is #2 in March.
So it selling pretty well even against ERA “boycott”.

I've seen hardcore zealots on places like era basically surrender this gen and advocate for MS buying so much this gen that next gen becomes a bloodbath in their favor. I'm not a fan of that approach, but spite is the main component of their proposed strategies, lol.

They are going to contribute to Xbox's doom, because they don't seem to understand that MS buying up publishers just to starve Sony of content (which is the real reason they run with the idea at all) just means more of a mess for MS to make once their plate spills over and everything crashes down.

MS can barely efficiently manage what they already have, and those fools want them to buy up even MORE!? If those people just came out and said they want PlayStation to die so Xbox can look like it finally won, I would have a bit more respect for them. As-is they are just pathetic.

I'll be honest...it doesn't have a lot in its favor. Maybe the only thing are some of the indie/AA console exclusives it has. I would be interested in stuff like Echo Generations and Ravenlok coming to PlayStation (where they can hopefully find a bigger audience), same with games like Replaced. Those are the few things I'd say Xbox has going well for it in terms of neat, interesting gaming experiences.

But obviously that isn't enough. They can't win the value game because people aren't really demanding the S. They can't win the power game because Series X is getting its ass kicked in multiplats and has few if any exclusives competing with the best-looking PS exclusives currently out. They can't win the services game because GP has stagnated on console and the service is barely pulling in that much revenue. They can't win the sales game because Sony & Nintendo are just too damn good for Xbox to catch up.

There is no easy answer for them in how to improve the situation and Starfield alone can only be of partial help at best. That's assuming it's some actual GOTY-level contender and not just getting Halo Infinite-style artificial boosts by critics just so Xbox can have a seat at the table through a proverbial participation trophy.

Using indie games a crutch is so 8 year ago, Xbox gets zero credit for that. These games would all run on phones and basic laptops/pcs that everybody has.

The reason why MS is able to put those games on Gamepass is because hardly anybody is willing to pay for them (or play them for that matter).

Xbots bragged about Vampire Survivor being included on Gamepass, when that shit costs $2.

At the beginning of last gen, people bashed Playstation for having too many indies, now those same people gloat about Xbox being "more supportive" of indies.
I still bash them for wasting my time with a bunch boring indies in State of Plays. They should only get behind an indie game when it's a guaranteed banger.

Looks at the sales, the console market is all about big AAA experiences (and so am I).

Dude, you’re the insufferable one.

Xbox is getting annihilated, and MS not giving any real numbers is making you spin fairy tales about their performance to fill some gaping hole in your soul, and it’s goddamned pathetic.

Never learn.
PS5 is better than the PS4 in every single way and it benefit from it's momentum. The moment MS announced the Series S and showed up without a launch line up it was over.

Gamepass disciples and reward grinders can't see past their own cheapness. Nobody is sad that they have to pay $70 to play God of War/Spider-man/TLoU/Final Fantasy/Eden Ring/etc on release.

This truly must have hurt him to type. The fact that Xbox is down less YOY in Europe and the UK like he tried to argue here is not some trump card, either.

Sales were low and dropped even lower. It doesn't matter how much lower, but we know PlayStation is murdering it.

The question remains as to whether we'll see a PS2 vs Xbox level gulf. I sure hope so with both consoles trending in their 6th gen iteration's direction. To think that XSX/S may end up discontinued at OG Xbox numbers!
