From 2017-2023, the console games market has grown +59%. PC only +37%; has shrunk since 2022

Mobile alone makes more than consoles and PC combined. This is where the real money is and I'm surprised Sony doesn't invest more into mobile.
That's why I argue that Sony should invest more in mobile gaming, because the money from mobile gaming could easily be invested in making PlayStation games. No wonder Tencent is still ahead of Microsoft and Sony thanks to mobile gaming.

They definitely aren't bigger in Europe/the UK. We're talking 2-4x ratios just between the PS consoles and PC. Something drastically different is happening in Asia for Capcom

At the beginning of the gen, Capcom released almost nothing on PS besides REVillage. Monster Hunter Rise and Monster Hunter Stories 2 were PC/Switch exclusives and they sold millions. It made PC look bigger compared with PlayStation that only had RE Village. That's when these reports started coming out.

But now 3 years later? I doubt it's still true.

Apple arcade alone makes a ton of money as well. Sony's most profitable game is a mobile one

It's because PC sales are too low to register.

UK:
Resident Evil 4 physical: 145k
Resident Evil 4 console digital: 136k
Resident Evil 4 PC digital: ~40k (Not on top 20 list, sub 43k)

Frustrated World Cup GIF

Nope, it's because they don't track it. Lots of PC games are not tracked wherever it is NPD or other tracker organizations.

Do you seriously believe the best-selling sku for Street Fighter 6, Resident Evil 4 (with PSVR2 mode) and Dragons Dogma 2 is the PC version? Like every NPD and UK threads, the Steam version was number 1 for all of them?

You can't be serious? Not even Gabe's personal mistress would believe that 🤣

Yes, I do.

Im not blinded by console fanboyism like others on this site clearly is.

CapComs focus on PC as their lead platform is for a reason.

No numbers supports this in any market worldwide. You're the one completely blinded by your PCMR. Troll.

Well, the biggest gaming markets in the world, China, Asia in general, don't even care about consoles.

Sony and MS uses PC/Steam to reach those markets.

I mean.... games sell good on steam but their focus on pc could still be a translation or communication error.

Absolutely, they have however repeated that focus many times over the years.

Once they talked about how well their older games were selling on PC and I think that's part of the reason they focus on PC. It is so easy to buy older games on Steam compared to consoles and they still make money from older games.

Like, you can often see sales on games that are 6+ years old on Steam that are topping the global best seller chart list.

Good call. I found an article from 2014 about releases on PC in Asia:

Monster hunter Online, which they released with Tencent in China, is an example of having to have a completely different game for this market. Even if it's profitable, it has no bearing on the AAA multiplatform market, where PC is likely still the bottom rung even for Capcom.

Well, the biggest gaming markets in the world, China, Asia in general, don't even care about consoles.

Going by this logic, we should also only consider the type of games which actually sell and make up the majority of the revenue in that region:

MTX filled GaaS, gacha games and MMORPGs, especially "domestic" ones.

I don't feel represented by that, I don't like those kind of games and I don't want that majority of the games turn to that shit on my platform(s) of choice.

I see reports to the contrary regarding PC, showing it having continued to grow through last year. I really don't believe anything on the internet anymore and I am pretty much down to porn bookmarks.

See some of my graphs being posted.

People tend to conflate the PC market for AAA/AA/F2P games because they include China and SK, huge PC markets, but are largely untapped to foreign companies due to demographics and government laws.

The PC market may be $40B globally but $20B of that is China ($15B) and SK ($5B) so for most gaming pubs, $20B is mostly the addressable market. Compared with consoles total software market (not incl subs or full physical revenue):
  • Playstation : $13B (PS FY 2023)
  • Xbox : $7.2B (Xbox leak 2020, declined now)
  • Nintendo : $7.5B (Nintendo FY 2023)
This is not even full revenue. Physical is a huge market for Nintendo and Playstation, and on their FY it is only accounted as the platform cut, only 15% of the full revenue. With that in mind, approx:
  • Playstation : ~$16.3B
  • Xbox : ~$8B
  • Nintendo : $9.5B
Total = $35B

Console sub market:
  • Playstation : $4.5B
  • Xbox : $3.5B
  • Nintendo : $1B
Total = $9B
Total Console software market = $44B
Total Console hardware market = PS ($10B), Nintendo ($5.5B), Xbox ($3.3B) = $18.8B = $62.8B (SW+HW)

Worth repeating, but that rainbow visual capitalist chart is complete bogus and shows how misinformation can spread despite 0 sources.
We have actual sales data and publisher data on PC sales.

Console is 70-80% of revenue for the big AAA pubs. Its the lifeblood of the AAA industry.

To put it even more clearly, per MSFT's estimate, Epic's estimate and the recent Wolfire v Steam courtcase, Valve's revenue is only $7B
  • Playstation : ~$16.3B (+$4.5B subs)
  • Xbox : ~$8B (+$3.5B subs)
  • Nintendo : $9.5B (+$1B subs)
  • Valve : $7B
PC isn't eating the console space, but the two are in competition. Consoles like PS/Nintendo can eat PC marketshare, as we saw in Germany or SK. China is a huge growth region of both PS and Nintendo and I imagine if they got big there, they will be eating PC marketshare.

What an absolute firecracker of a first post and thank you for putting to bed the notion that the Pelham Smithers chart is legitimate, and underlining the huge contribution of an entirely separate China/SK market bundled up into PC stats

And welcome! I always loved reading yours on Installbase, but I find the forum itself insufferable due to bad actors like Fiendcode.

Playstation is the biggest platform for all the publishers, unless you think PC is bigger than all consoles combined 🤡

View attachment 4714

Capcom = 45% with the 3 consoles or 64% between Xbox and PS. These numbers are outdated so Xbox is even lower now.
That Capcom number are fake or very old, see the Capcom statements regarding their PC revenue in this post. In FY22 they said in two different quarters that PC was around 50% for them, and then in FY23 said that it kept growing.

Please, can you provide the source for Capcom's revenue split per console/platform? I did search for it yesterday in their reports and wasn't able to find it.

These charts/tables are pretty clear cut so I stand corrected. PC is indeed the largest single platform for Capcom.
Nice. Just to be clear, only the last table of that post is about Capcom only. The other ones are for the whole gaming market, not only Capcom. In all cases IDG estimates, but reported in different ways and times.

Mobile alone makes more than consoles and PC combined. This is where the real money is and I'm surprised Sony doesn't invest more into mobile.
SIE mentioned multiple times that they are working to expand to mobile. They created a new PlayStation Mobile division, hired top exec from places like the AppStore, bought Savage/Neon Koi (Supercell/Rovio/Rockstar/Wargaming people), made deals with several top mobile devs/publishers in Asia in recent years asa Tencent, Netease, MiHoyo, NC Soft, CyGames(+Kadokawa) or -they were top 1 in Japan- Akatsuki(+Koei Tecmo). They are also working to bring and adapt PS+ and PS cloud gaming to mobile. Outside SIE, Sony also acquired in recent times Lasengle (generated over $7B with Fate/Grand Order for them) or Crunchyroll Games.

They mentioned their expansion to mobile would also help them improve their profitability, and like with PC it would help them expand in regions where consoles aren't a big market, particularly in some key Asian countries like China Korea or India.

They mentioned plans to bring their IPs to mobile partnering with top mobile gaming players or via new internal teams they'd acquire or create with expert devs, plus also plans to parter with smaller, buotique mobile gaming teams.

But all these things take time, we may start seeing the first mobile games fruit of these efforts in maybe a year or two (or more).

I've been following your posts on Installbase for years and I think you're the best poster there. I don't know how you deal with all the nintendrones, xbots and haters.

This is obvious to everyone and we've been repeating this non-stop but they still believe PC is 50% because of China market 🙄
