I disagree and I'm not interested in a back and forth over one of your famous massively long posts pushing your opinions as facts. I think it will still be enough of the market to be worth doing.

I'm simply saying that I would like for the next PS to have physical media, not that it's a guaranteed.
That dude is going to defend and justify every bad trend possible, he always sides with what he thinks is better for Sony.

Physical is the best thing about console and hopefully we'll see Xbox dying as soon as they officially give up on discs.

Impossible, and if there would be some exception in some tiny country would be totally irrelevant.

In CY22 only $9B of the $55B generated by console games was in physical sales:

No, physical game sales revenue keep getting replaced by digital game sales+addons+subs revenue. Which means that in the long term physical sales will dissapear or become a tiny niche, pretty likely for collector editions only which may no longer include the disk.

Add-ons are not "replacing" physical software sales. You can buy the disc version of the game and still buy DLC/MTX. Add-ons are a growth driver due to an expected increase in GAAS while software sales in general (physical and digital) are expected to stay about the same. I think the sub projections are wrong though

With this game being canceled and the team being fired Blizzard will easily go over 10 years without anything new beside underwhelming sequels. They don't even have the talent to attempt to do anything else.

Bethesda already released a string of flops, with another flop announced.

Xbox Studios tanked all their IPs and couldn't release a good game to save their lives, they hyped Hellblade for 5 years and that game is unlikely to have more than 3 hours of gameplay.

Activision can't release anything other than CoD and CoD is trending downwards before the deal with Sony is even over.

Phil Spencer put Xbox in a terrible position and spent over 10 years sabotaging MS.

My main thing is that these guys were singing a different tune when it was Playstation having layoffs. No one cared that it was an industry-wide problem back then.

This fucker immediately goes for the Sony Too angle and defends Microsoft's callous layoffs as a 3 trillion dollar company. Fuck him. Hope he loses his job and ends up on the street siphoning garbage through a straw because he can no longer afford dental.

Exactly. That game was badly mismanged. 6 years into the project and still nowhere finished? And on a garbage engine? Shutting it down was the correct decision.
Don't act like that has been a blocker for xbox to ship and hype games... They have not shipped anything that was finished, had a good engine and was developed in a reasonable amount of time in the last 4 years or so (that started with Halo:I).

That never stopped them before, I think the real reason is jealousy, their existing studios were jealous they did not come up with anything as good as this game so they canned it!

They always fall back on that when they start to lose the narrative.

What? Did you miss the info for Japan, where digital sales are still a very small amount of total units sold compared to physical?
Two thirds of players in Japan play on mobile or PC, where do they buy retail copies of mobile and PC games?

image.png

Regarding gaming revenue in Japan (2022, we still don't have the 2023 numbers):
Mobile games US$8.5 billion
Console software US$2.7 billion
PC games US$1.3 billion
https://80.lv/articles/japanese-gaming-market-keeps-growing/

This is a total of $12.5B gaming revenue in Japan, being $9.8B (78.4%) from PC+mobile (so digital only) and 21.6% from consoles (digital+physical). So even if 100% of the console software revenue were from physical game copies (which obviously isn't the case at all) it would be barely a fifth of the total. Meaning, physical games in Japan are a small portion of the gaming market like in the rest of the countries.

Anyway there is nothing wrong with providing the option of disc media for games and SIE would be suiciding PlayStation to not have a disc drive option for the PS6.
There's nothing wrong, but if nobody buys them there will be no point on selling them.

Now will there be a disc drive built into PS6 by default? Most likely no.
I think the smarter thing would be to repeat what they did with PS5 Slim: to have the disk reader as add-on. But it would be great if it would also read PS1-PS3 CDs and DVDs to run disks of these platforms (if they still work) as a BC addon.

Sony's studios kept growing last year as did in the previous ones, they never fired thousands of employees. We don't have any factual data of layoffs at Sony other than the around 100 people in Bungie (who now is like 500 people bigger than 2 years ago when Sony bought them) and a handful guys in this studio or few in that other one (so could be normal day to day firings and not layoffs).

Addons revenue is replacing physical (+ digital) game sales revenue, that's a fact. Nowadays people buy the game cheaper -via discounts or price cuts- or "free" in a sub or from F2P and then buy addons for it.

First, console are a small part of the gaming revenue, mobile+PC are a bigger chunk. Most mobile revenue are addons. Even in console addons are the biggest revenue segment and keeps growing (like in a slower place game subs too), while revenue from game sales keeps decreasing.

This isn't new, it has been happening since many years ago. These are only some recent ones:
